it was originally supposed to be a retirement thing. to gracefully leave the tonight show to conan while he called it quits. but then NBC propped a stick up his ass and said "no way motherfucker! you belong to us!" and talked him into another show. and now, because of the ratings taking a hit (mainly because of jimmy fallon and all the other shitty programming NBC offers) they want to put things back to how they were to regain ratings...but its going to destroy them.

That's not at all how it went down. Leno decided in 2008 that he didn't want to leave all of the sudden and told NBC that they could either give him another show, having already contracted Conan to The Tonight Show, or he would go to another network and get the same time slot. This is all documented. Just about every network other than CBS was practically foaming at the mouth at the thought of taking him from NBC when they heard he wasn't ready to leave.

Anybody want to pitch a ballpark figure as to how much O'Brien got paid to exit "gracefully" stage left? All of this is simply white old rich men (w.o.r.m.'s) playing with their toys. I agreed with Seinfeld when he said Conan had nothing to complain about. And I'm with #5, it's not like NBC is taking away his children and house. Jay messed up by leaving "The Tonight Show". All was good before. I wish they could just put Jay back in his original spot and put Conan back on Late Night. Conan was just one of those guys that can't be censored too much, he was kind of "off", and that's why he was great on "Late Night". Now that he's on "The Tonight Show", he has to interview the really big people and book the really big bands and be in the really big studio. I would think he would want to go back to his old job, then hope that, in a few years, he can rehost the TS.

I don't know why putting Jay at 10 was going to work, and everyone should have had some kind of reasoning that this schedule might be temporary.

You idiots piling on Leno like he is to blame! NBC made the deal with O'Brian years ago to give him the Tonight Show to keep him from walking. They thought Leno would be ready to go and he wasn't doing as well.

Last year Leno is #1, but his time is up, NBC was afraid he would go somewhere else and kick their ass. So they give him a show at 10 to save money on original programing and keep him away from someone else. It worked, but the locals were losing money and threatened to pull Leno and run local programming. So NBC tries to NOT MAKE A REAL DECISION and keep both Leno and Conan in the same basic spot. Now Conan is trailing NIGHTLINE for gosh sake, but NBC is afraid of him leaving and this is the best they can do without buying Conan out.

And LENO is the bad guy here? Look, neither Leno, O'Brian or Lettermen are bad guys here, and never have been. Put the blame squarely where it belongs.

Anything... anyone can replace Conan O'Brien. I'm a late-night type of person but when O'Brien moved up to "The Tonight Show", I've been more of an early-to-bed since Conan is a waste of time. In the past, he was a good skit writer but heaven forebid, never will he be an MC of any show, period!!! Leno's not perfect at all but he's good at quick response, hot collection of cars, good people he invites to the show. No one will ever replace Johnny Carson. Before the assholes picked O'Bien to replace Leno, Craig Fergeson had my vote, hands down. He has his own style while O'Brien is a waste of my time.

I far prefer Conan to Jay. I rarely watch NBC Latenight because of schedule conflicts, but when I do, I just watch Conan. Jay sucks. Looks like I wont be bothering with NBC latenight at all now.

I've always preferred Letterman. Think back to 1993 -- NBC pulled the same shit with Dave, forcing his move to CBS.

I have never liked Leno. The guy's an ego-freak hack. Not remotely funny or interesting or smart, even with a staff of well-paid writers. And this week? There seem to be no words to capture what a spectacular douche Leno is. "Ass rapist" is a good start.

I have more respect for Conan today than ever before. Way to go out with style.

But for the record, Craig Ferguson is the cream of the crop on late night.

I don't know why Jay Leno keeps at it. Money is not the issue. The tonight show is mildly funny, the monologue is the funniest part of the show, and Jays adlibs. Although he has to be the worst interviewer of any talk show I've seen. The shows guests seem uncomfortable and he's awkward at asking questions, or doesn't ask them correctly, and seems unprepared. This whole power move must be an ego thing.

I blame NBC for this. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Keeping Jay and Conan so no other network could take them and put them up against NBC shows NBC does not like competition because it knows it will get beaten. Having a stronger lineup of shows would've made things better.

Honestly, I was a big fan of Leno before this fiasco. But now, I see him as nothing more than a selfish, greedy prick. And based on this situation, I can't help but wonder exactly what he did to screw Letterman out of the spot way back when. Before this, I saw that situation as the executives screwing Letterman, but based on what's gong on now, I can't help but wonder about the actual level of Leno's direct involvement in things.

Conan's obvious dream was to host The Tonight Show, and he got to do it for seven months, but now, no matter what happens, even if he gets a new show on Fox, it won't be The Tonight Show With Conan O'brien.

But the good thing is that if he does get a show on Fox, it will likely start at 11 pm after the local news, which should help him kick Leno's sorry ass.

Fuck Leno, and fuck NBC!!! I've recorded Conan on my DVR almost every night since he became the host of The Tonight Show, but I will NEVER watch Leno! Rate that you sorry hack fuckers!!!

I, too, have really learned to enjoy Craig Ferguson most. I had a chill down my spine years ago when Conan was announced as future Tonight host. I felt he was extremely clever but not quite at the lengendary show's level. More grooming should have been subtly done on the Late Night show.

Now I fear this great show's future is in jeopardy. Leno may have lost a good portion of his audience, as comments here demonstrate. The show may never get to first place again, especially since few Conan fans will watch; but I hope they work to sharpen Jay's basic interviewing skills.

The fault started with NBC execs trying to have all options open to them a few years ago, and it temporarily worked. But then it came time to honor the contracts, and all h*ll broke loose.

This is a giant mess, and the damage is self-inflicted. Leno should have handled this better (though he'd never be blameless), and been more supportive of Conan and the Tonight Show's reputation similar to how Conan first demonstrated. But I'm sure it is hard with all the bad feelings that exist.

This business "handling" goes on in many--probably most--companies. But the workers don't get paid multi-millions to put up with it. It is nice once that the decision-makers also get exposed for what they are.
