PLEASE! She just rehearsed all her lines because she was in a lock down at one of McCain's various homes (6? 8?) getting drilled on what to say and all her possible answers. Just repeating what you've memorized does not mean she understands. She is stupid. Just look at the Katie Couric interivews.

Furthermore, Palin showed her lack of depth and understanding by having only two rebuttals: "Obama will raise your taxes" and "Obama wants the terrorists to win." Her endless recitation of worn out talking points bordered on plagiarism and the only reason she didn't look as stupid as she did with Katie Couric is because she was never asked a follow up or to cite examples of anything.

Joe Biden, on the other hand offered clear solutions, explained in explicit detail why neither Palin nor McCain are "mavericks," what our next steps need to be in the middle east - and why, why he is giving tax breaks to anyone making under $250K per year, and countless other points. The only way that the debate can be considered a win is that she didn't fall on her face in a puddle of her own drool.

43 I agree, it was awkward. Especially the contrast between the two candidates. Palin was obviously nervous and unsure of herself, whereas Biden appeared calm and collected. Palin often sounded like a commercial for McCain, Biden spoke from experience using points and the debate effectively. Palin stared directly at the camera "connecting" with the people, Biden spoke to the moderator. Palin gained confidence as she went on, and Biden became more human. These two are not on equal playing ground, quite clearly. Palin held her own but the debate made things clear who is ready to lead - someone who KNOWS what the parameters and job descriptions are for the office of VP, for example. Biden.

Of the 43 presidents, 8 have died. Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage (he had heart disease, high blood pressure, and slight case of paralyzing polio). Warren G. Harding and William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia. Zachary Taylor died of cholera. Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, John F. Kennedy were assassinated. I would really like to think that we are past the threat of cholera and I find it hard to believe that doctors would let a president today die of pneumonia. McCain's got a clean bill of health and his mother is proof that he just may outlive us all. And if no one has assassinated bush, do you really think someone would go out of there way for McCain? If it was, I would consider moving out of the country but then realize that no one could fuck up as much as the last 3 Presidents have and not have their asses held over the fire. Bar Stool Economics:

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. Obviously Palin did much better than expected - she was expected to be a train wreck, based on the Couric interview - but people have missed the key point: she spent almost the whole debate restoring her own personal political image (as a pit bull, joe sixpack, darn tootin', wink wink feisty cutie...oh, and a "maverick"). The only long-lasting impact of the debate will be the positive one for Palin herself, as it seems possible, again, that she might be a player in 2012. To the extent there was any impact at all on the presidential election, Biden hurt McCain much more than Palin hurt Obama. But that didn't seem to be her primary concern. Poor John. He probably doesn't even realize it yet, but his squeeze has already left him. She just hasn't walked away yet.

What makes Palin anymore qualified than any other hockey mom in the America? This is the biggest problem with the American election process, you all make your decision on who most likeable not who has the best judgement.

Today the Labor Dept reported that the economy lost 159,000 jobs in September, a much higher figure than economists had expected and the biggest drop in five years. It's the 9th straight month of job losses. And these numbers are the period BEFORE the financial meltdown.

We're in a true recession and it's deepening rapidly. In a month, it will be worse, not better (most economists predict we won't hit bottom until sometime in January or February, at the earliest). Most voters blame the 2-term Bush administration. Because of that alone, enough independent voters will vote for Obama over McCain (McBush) to give Obama the election. All Obama has to do is hold steady for a month, and he can certainly do that.

I agree with @133. Palin was out for herself last night. Obviously. All of the talk and analysis afterward was and is about Palin. From her perspective, that's great. From the McCain presidential campaign perspective, it's awful - once again, the focus is completely away from McCain, who once again seems to lack charisma by comparison. At their joint campaign appearances audiences have been walking away after Palin talks and not bothering to listen to McCain. She's not going to sink him by looking incompetent, as she did with those Katic Couric interviews, but she's going to sink him by continuing to be an attention-sucking CELEBRITY candidate.

This Palin line from the debate says it all:

"And I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I'm going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record also."

It's all about her. That's lethal in a VP candidate.

Obama's 'Weatherman' Connection

There has been a sudden spate of blog items and newspaper articles, mainly in the British press, linking Barack Obama to a former member of the radical Weather Underground Organization that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, now holds the position of distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Although never convicted of any crime, he told the New York Times in September 2001, "I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough."

Both Obama and Ayers were members of the board of an anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002. In addition, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama's re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate in April 2001, as reported here. They lived within a few blocks of each other in the trendy Hyde Park section of Chicago, and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles.

Is there anything here that raises questions about Obama's judgment or is this just another example of guilt by association?
The Facts

The first article in the mainstream press linking Obama to Ayers appeared in the London Daily Mail on February 2. It was written by Peter Hitchens, the right-wing brother of the left-wing firebrand turned Iraq war supporter, Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens cited the Ayers connection to bolster his argument that Obama is "far more radical than he would like us to know."

The Hitchens piece was followed by a Bloomberg article last week pointing to the Ayers connection as support for Hillary Clinton's contention that Obama might not be able to withstand the "Republican attack machine." Larry Johnson, a former counterterrorism official at the CIA and the State Department, predicted that the Republicans would seize on the Ayers case, and other Chicago relationships, to "bludgeon Obama's presidential aspirations into the dust."

The London Sunday Times joined the chorus this weekend by reporting that Republicans were "out to crush Barack by painting him as a leftwinger with dubious support".

The only hard facts that have come out so far are the $200 contribution by Ayers to the Obama re-election fund, and their joint membership of the eight-person Woods Fund Board. Ayers did not respond to e-mails and telephone calls requesting clarification of the relationship. Obama spokesman Bill Burton noted in a statement that Ayers was a professor of education at the University of Illinois and a former aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley, and continued:

Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous.

In the short term, the person who has most to gain by speculation about Obama's acquaintance with a former terrorist is Hillary Clinton. The former First Lady likes to present herself as "tested and vetted" after years of exposure to Republican attacks, in contrast to Obama, a relative newcomer to hardscrabble presidential politics. Such arguments resonate with Johnson, the counterterrorism expert, who told me that he is a Clinton supporter, although not involved with the campaign.

But the Obama-Ayers link is a tenuous one. As Newsday pointed out, Clinton has her own, also tenuous, Weatherman connection. Her husband commuted the sentences of a couple of convicted Weather Underground members, Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans, shortly before leaving office in January 2001. Which is worse: pardoning a convicted terrorist or accepting a campaign contribution from a former Weatherman who was never convicted?

Whatever his past, Ayers is now a respected member of the Chicago intelligentsia, and still a member of the Woods Fund Board. The president of the Woods Fund, Deborah Harrington, said he had been selected for the board because of his solid academic credentials and "passion for social justice."

"This whole connection is a stretch," Harrington told me. "Barack was very well known in Chicago, and a highly respected legislator. It would be difficult to find people round here who never volunteered or contributed money to one of his campaigns."

The problem with almost everyone in the world is that they fail to understand basic Economics 101.

Taxing the rich beyond belief doesn't work. First off, they're rich, so they don't HAVE to work if they don't want to. Why should they go to work everyday to pay more than 40% of what they make in income taxes when they can just live off their investments (capital gains taxes are only around 15%, and with the economy sinking and the market desperately trying to stay afloat, no one would dare raise the capital gains tax).

Second, the people earning over $250,000 are not the Paris Hiltons of the world. They are business owners...likely your employers. Like your job? Want to keep it? Then I wouldn't recommend voting for Obama...

Third, is anyone really stupid enough to believe that if these corporations or business owners have their taxes raised, that they will just eat that loss of income? No, they will pass it on to the consumers, like you and me. Tax the oil companies, and watch the values of the mutual funds that many, many Americans have invested in for retirement plummet. I pay more for a gallon of milk right now than a gallon of gas, and milk is a renewable resource! How come nobody's calling for a windfall profits tax on the greedy dairy farmers? Oh, right, because they'd rather believe the sound bites from the 'community organizer' who received more donations from Fannie Mae than anyone else in the Senate except Chris Dodd. Pretty impressive, considering he was only there 145 days before he abdicated his duties to begin his presidential campaign, doncha think?

Sarah Palin is a celebrity politician. It's a huge irony given McCain's very successful jabs against Obama for that very same thing, before the conventions (seems like ages ago). But look at all the TV coverage, all the news and blog coverage, this comment thread (which will go into the hundreds). Right after the debate, most of the commentary and analysis was about Palin, even though she didn't damage Obama in any way. It's genuine celebrity, complete with the "why is she supposed to be special, again?" factor that we make fun of here (most of the time, anyway).

If you recall, McCain had pulled to a virtual tie with Obama before the conventions. I thought his Obama-as-an-empty-celebrity strategy was a winner. Now that's off the table because Palin is 100 times the empty celebrity as Obama. Plus, there were 3 days (day before debate, debate day, day after) when Palin knocked McCain out of the news, while Biden stayed in the background as a VP candidate should. She keeps doing that with her interviews and appearances. John McCain simply can't afford that, while trailing with only a month to go. I truly feel sorry for people who can't make ends meet, have kids, and we all know, kids always need stuff. My heart goes out to those people, like the guy above who'd like to get his little girl braces.

But some people are in a bad situation because they live WAY beyond their means. I don't live in a mansion, but it's a nice house and we have nice things in it. We always buy brand new cars, pay cash for them, BUT - we keep those cars until they virtually die. We don't deny ourselves extras, we buy good food, take a couple of little trips each year, but we don't fly to Europe for 3 weeks, or take Hawaiian vacations every year.

Not all, but most people living in those McMansions have no right being in a place that they truly cannot afford.

I am voting for Obama because of his policies:

1-Only raise taxes for Americans making $250,000 or more per year.
2-Give tax breaks to those Americans making less than $250,000 per year.
3-Provide funding for alternative energy.

Anyway, I actually read a big variety of newspapers and watch just about every channel there is. I'm not wearing "blinders" because it's not like I sit in front of MSNBC all day, nodding my head yes. I watch CNN, FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. Read everything from the extreme right to the extreme left. I like to be as informed as possible so that my view is not utterly stupid and towards a candidate solely out of party bias.

I see and hear both sides more than a lot of people probably do. It is my assessment that the McCain campaign is dead wrong. They are not a "Maverick" ticket. They are more of the same failed policies that have put us in the terrible situation we are in now. Any new policies they have put forth pale in comparison to the Obama/Biden ticket as well.

As for Sarah Palin. She is grossly and uniquely unqualified for the job of VP. It's not that she's stupid. Not at all. We were waiting for the foreclosure sales to clear so that true market values could be established for owned homes, so that people could learn what their equity is now. You could legitimately trace this problem back to the Community Reinvestment Act.

But then the Wall Street financial crisis hit, with a massively greater impact on everything - especially the stock markets and the overnight commercial lending that allows businesses to continue running. THIS is the economy- and jobs-killer, and THIS is why we're contemplating a 700 billion dollar (more like 1 trillion) taxpayer bailout. THIS crisis was caused by greed and fraud on Wall Street, not the CRA. For example, there was nothing in the CRA that legalized creating multiple mortgage securities based on the same underlying set of mortgages. At a minimum, that's misleading, but we'll see if it's fraud (the FBI is investigating the banks). It's also why the financial markets are in chaos - the underlying funding of the securities was eventually called into question and revealed as massively inadequate in many cases, so the securities collapsed, with lots of critical ripple effects. Saying the CRA caused all this is like inverting a favorite conservative slogan - guns (the CRA) don't kill people (financial markets), people (Wall Street) decide to kill people (financial markets).

Obama wants to implement this same tax structure while giving the rest of Americans a tax break. I've been reading lots of political stuff today, following the debate, and it's mostly two things being said on the conservative/Republican side: Palin won (or at least won back her image), and "the country is doomed" (or words to that effect). Nobody's saying "It looks like John McCain is going to win!!!" Is it really over already?

Republicans have to stop their love affair with Palin. 100% of the focus should be on McCain and helping him find a way, somehow, to win despite having his best issue taken away from him (Iraq) and his worst issue becoming the only issue voters care about now (economy/jobs). Palin's time needs to be up, right now, and she needs to yield the stage to McCain. The crowds of people who come to hear Palin are irrelevant to the task of convincing independents to vote for John McCain.

I know this...there is NO WAY Obama can provide funding for all of his wild-eyed schemes, while reducing the taxes on 95% of the population.

Or the air attack in Afghanistan that we said killed 7 civilians (based on satellite pictures) but later the Afghans (our allies, not the Taliban) and the U.N. documented 90 civilian deaths after the bodies were pulled from under the rubble (so, not visible to initial satellite imagery)?

#268 - that's an overreaction. We're not bailing out the rich - they've already parachuted out and transferred their money into cash reserves (why do you think the FDIC insurance cutoff was raised). We're buying a ton of mortgage-backed securities that need to backed up with real money to make banks start giving out loans again, so that business don't fail and the layoffs don't get worse than they already are. If the securities end up being totally worthless, we're out the 700 (or more). If they rebound in value, we'll have bought low and be in a position to sell high and make a profit. It all depends on how it's handled from here on. That's why it'd be nice if somebody - anybody - started talking about the details of how all this will be handled from now on. It'd be especially nice if McCain and Obama did, because whoever gets elected will have to manage and oversee all of this, now that the bill is passed. Forget about all the the domestic stuff and most of the foreign policy stuff (we'll start a slow process of pulling out in Iraq while throwing lots more resources at Afghanistan, regardless of who's in office). But, even sooner than that, there will be lots of crucial decisions made and as of now, there's a complete lack of transparency for the decision-making process. That has to end.

Enough is enough. - I've kept my mouth shut for months, scanning the paper in silence, reading the somewhat bi-partisan argument going on, not jumping in, as I'm supposed to watch my stress levels. But Some of the more ludicrous commentary is screaming out for feedback. (FYI, every one of my statements is entrenched firmly in well-researched fact, easily documented)

1. Our current financial 'mess' is NOT all of 'Bush's' doing, it's VERY much a dual-party deal. Everyone involved knew there was trouble and they didn't tell us. Where we should be concerned and downright upset is that 1) greedy CEO's should NOT be allowed to jump ship with millions in bail-out bonuses as it penalizes everyone, from their employees to their clients. (especially when the American People are at risk for picking up the tab)

2. We should be VERY angry about the potential of bailing these idiotic financial institutions out - it's our tax money, people! We are already taxed to the gills!!! This is OUR money!!! Forcing taxpayers to bail out these greedy institutions that gave loans to people with shaky credit is bad enough but now we're finding out that they were also buying bad paper. Why should WE be responsible? Frankly, they should be going to jail for endangering other people's investments. Shame on you!!

For all of you 'Agents of Change' who are 'Sick of Bush' and positive that Obama is the answer to prayer, let's review this:

I was disgusted to read in the Alaskan newspapers about what Palin did when she went into early labor with her son, Trig, while in Texas. She was leaking amniotic fluid (a condition that risks infection and the life of the unborn child), but refused to go to hospital because she wanted to give her speech. After giving her speech, she and her husband, Todd, boarded a plane and made the long flight home so that their child could be born of “Alaskan soil.” Upon arriving in Alaska she went to the hospital, whereupon full labor was induced. (This is always the case when there is rupturing and early labor with this phase of pregnancy.) Something is definitely wrong with this woman. I would cut my right arm off before I would risk the life or well being of my unborn child in such a manner. Is this a Christian woman and mother? Do politics and ego come before the safety of her own family? She is not who she pretends to be.

The debate proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that Palin is a real person who has folksy charm, confidence and personality, but little or no substance. She avoided so many questions and needed so much help from her cheat sheets to give scripted answers, it was an insult to American viewers. She lost my vote. Palin hasn't "led" Alaska. She has less than 18 months experience. When she took office, she hired friends and placed them in positions for which they had zero experience or qualifications. She is often a "no-show" at important legislative meetings, and has come under fire for not responding to the communications and needs of a number of mayors and authorities throughout Alaska. She insulates herself, and is often unreachable.

When she doesn't understand an important issue, she performs what is referred to as "grandstanding" as a smoke screen. She gave the legislature no budget direction, and slashed programs and projects during her first months in office that had to be re-instated due to public protest and further legislative actoin, simply because she didn't understand their importance.

She deliberately lied to the American people and her own constituents by "grandstanding" and saying that she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the bridge from nowhere. In truth, it was exactly the other way around.

When Palin first came on the scene, I liked her. However, I don’t believe in media hype or marketing soundbytes, so I researched her record and got the facts. What has this governor of state with only 630,000 residents done in the past 18 months? Not even close to what McCain’s campaign maintains:
· When she took over as Mayor of Wasilla with 6,000 residents, she bragged that the job “wasn’t rocket science,” and that she could handle it alone, as her predecessors had done. She soon created a position of City Manager and filled it with someone to handle much of the work because she was in over her head. As we all know, she also left this town with a $22 mil budget deficit.

· When she took office as governor, she hired friends and placed them in positions for which they had zero experience or qualifications. She is often a "no-show" at important legislative meetings, and has come under fire for not responding to the communications and needs of a number of mayors and authorities throughout Alaska. She insulates herself, and is often unreachable.

· When she doesn't understand an important issue, she performs what is referred to as "grandstanding" as a smoke screen. She gives scripted answers and avoids questions. Her position papers are written for her. (Any of this sound familiar?) She takes credit for work and/or ideas that are not her own. That includes the “sweetheart deal” with TransCanada on the gas pipeline that, despite her phony bragging, exists only on paper. This deal is a high-risk house of cards; if one aspect fails, the deal falls through and will cost Alaska a half-billion dollar guarantee, without them having to lay so much as one foot of pipeline.

· She vetoed/slashed budget programs and projects during her first months in office that had to be re-instated due to public protest and further legislative action, simply because she didn't understand their importance. She didn’t know what she was doing.

· She deliberately lied to the American people and her own constituents by saying that she said, "thanks, but no thanks" to the bridge from nowhere. In truth, it was exactly the other way around. An article written by her own special counsel, John Katz, that ran in a March 2008 edition of the Juneau Enquirer, proves this, unequivocally.

· She wants to expand oil and gas drilling in Alaska at the expense of environmentally protected areas and Alaskan native sovereignty. She’s filed several lawsuits against the Feds protesting the listing of polar bears as an endangered species, and challenged Alaskan native fishing and hunting substinences. (Can you guess why she said that human activity is not the major cause of global warming?)

· Her “leadership” with the Alaska National Guard has been non-existent. She has given them no direction, no commands. As a matter of fact, according to General Craig Campbell, the service commander of Alaska’s National Guard, Palin gave him a lot of authority to act on his own. She has given him no direct approval or disapproval on any action since she took office.

Is it any wonder why McCain won’t let anyone near Palin with a microphone for any more one-on-one interviews? There's a lot more, but I just don't have the time or space to get into it any further. She has lied and misrepresented herself to the American public. I may have started out buying into the campaign hype about Sarah Palin, but as it stands now, I wouldn't allow this woman into my home

And before the word 'greedy' comes out of your mouth, realize this: there are many physicians out there (believe me, I know them) who have HAD to stop seeing Medicare patients in order to keep their practice alive. You see, if reimbursement is low, then the physicians don't make enough to cover their overhead in their practice. So go ahead and look into how great Medicare and Medicaid are, and try to convince me that a government-run health care system is great.

Don't ever forget that the government wastes money in everything it ever regulates. Remember how everyone jokes about how much it costs to buy a toilet at the Pentagon? If the government runs health care, then how much do you think medical supplies will cost?

Listen, I'm not really in favor of either candidate (or VP, for that matter). But I just don't think that the government should run health care. Contrary to what the genius said in the post above, it will NOT make things better for everyone. Just wait until the government has to make a budget for health care, and starts cost-cutting and yes, denying care, and then tell me how great this new system is. The US is the only country in the developed world that does not have a public health care system. It has the most expensive health care system on this planet, yet the general health of our population is lower than most G8 industrialized countries, with extremely high morality rates.

The costs are absurd; by switching to a single payer system, the costs would drop by billions of dollars, alone. These costs are currently paid by those who are sick – it comes out of their pockets. Did you know that the mortality rates in US for-profit hospitals far outweigh those of nonprofit institutions? It’s because investors want their share of profits, and hospitals cut costs any way they can to obtain profits for their investors. These include hiring less-skilled personnel. I know a number of people that were hospitalized and died or came close to it because of this very problem.

The U.S. was slammed in the past by saying we had an inferior health care system, when in fact, when they normalized birth weight (in order to select out the ridiculous number of crack babies and those born with fetal alcohol syndrome, etc), it was determined that we were the BEST in the world when it came to infant mortality.

The costs ARE absurd. They are absurd for many reasons. One reason is the ridiculous costs for malpractice insurance and the out-of-this-world settlements that are paid to lawyers (see John Edwards for that one). Medical costs have been driven up tremendously because of money going into malpractice lawyers' pockets. The CEOs of HMOs and insurance companies also take millions out of the pockets of U.S. citizens.

I'm sorry, but it's very difficult to compare mortality rates in for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals. Often, these hospitals have vastly different patient populations, so it's not a fair comparison. I do think that hospitals SHOULD cut costs, but not at the expense of care. More money should be put into preventative medicine, and less into end-of-life care. There are many other philosophical and practical changes that should be made.

And one thing you said is completely untrue. The private hospitals usually have MORE skilled personnel, not less skilled. Their patient populations usually demand it. I've worked in many different hospital environments, and I can tell you that the nice private hospitals GENERALLY have more skilled nursing and ancillary personnel.

We agree on one thing: There needs to be an overhaul in the US health care system and costs need to be controlled. I just differ in how I think this should be carried out.

1) First of all the US spends more on health care PER CAPITA, than any other comparable country.

2) The mortality rate is higher in private hospitals, on a percentage basis, than in non-profit hospitals.

3) There is an increasing lack of skilled nursing that has been and will continue to hit health care IN PRIVATE HOSPITALS. Skill levels have dropped, significantly, a fact of which you should be well aware It's not only salary issues, but work schedules, they way nurses feel they are treated/viewed by physicians, etc.

4) I come from a family of physicians and am well aware of the cost of malpractice insurance. The costs associated with professional medical care, medical equipment and supplies, keeping breast with the advances in technology, prescriptions, administrative costs, etc., have skyrocketed. Of course, greed comes into play, here. Can you honestly say that the income levels of indivdiuals are not associated with the mortality rate in this country? If our government does not possess the ability to have a role in health care, then it's obvious we have the wrong people are in government in the first place.

It is utterly comforting that the majority of the people who frequent/enjoy this blog, including the author himself are so blatantly against McCain/Palin and their ways of expressing it are oh so intelligent and noteworthy. People: please do research before you post. Everyone is tired of erroneous claims and outright lies. And by research, I do not mean a brief foray into extremist propaganda websites constructed by leftist or rightist groups. I mean that you should seek out actual sources of information. See the U.S. Senate website (http://www.senate.gov/) to find out which bills Obama and McCain have sponsored and co-sponsored. (Yes, poster #67, you will find that Obama actually sponsors bills. Many bills.) This will teach you something about where the candidates stand on policy issues. Learn about the candidates' biographical information and pet issues by reading their books and scouring the archives of the most reliable newspapers you can get your hands on.

And, poster #53, please remember to enroll in a remedial English course so that you can learn to spell above the 3rd grade level and perhaps sound halfway credible.

To the people who, for some reason, find it humorous that Obama and Palin are being contrasted in #5’s post: rub your two brain cells together and attempt to squeeze out a thought. You will realize why this particular juxtaposition was made, rather than one that contrasts Obama with McCain. Both Palin and Obama are the “stars” of their ticket. Both currently receive more media attention than their running mates. Countless comparisons of Obama and McCain have already been published. All things considered, it is only natural – as well as necessary - to progress to Obama-Palin comparisons.

The remainder of my post concerns the subject of Common Obama Myth #1: Obama the America-Hating Muslim.

First things first. The following information is not, in my opinion, actually relevant to the discussion - but I must respond to the conservatives who harp on the subject of Obama’s familial religious affiliations. Obama was raised by three people who did not practice a religion: his mother and maternal grandparents. His father (whom he knew for one month) was atheist. His paternal grandfather was Muslim. His stepfather (whom he knew for 4 years) was a non-practicing, ecumenical Muslim. Obama is Christian. And for god's sake: no, it is not strange or logically inconsistent that Obama might adhere to a religious ideology that differs from those of his relatives. Thinking people (i.e., people who are not sheep) do this quite often. Duh.

Obama, as most people who are not retarded (or working for Fox News) are aware, did not attend a "madrassa" school. While living in Indonesia as a child (1967-71), he spent 2 years at a Catholic school. When this became prohibitively expensive, he spent the next 2 years at a predominantly Muslim public school - which enrolled not just Muslims (gasp!), but also Christians, Buddhists, Confucians, and others. I hope you are aware that it is normal for religion-affiliated schools to enroll ecumenically - look at our country's Catholic schools.

Obama's mother and stepfather could not afford to send him to the fancy international schools that they would have preferred for him. His mother returned him to his Hawaii hometown after 4 years in Indonesia so that he would have better educational opportunities; she followed soon after.

Between graduating from Columbia (BA in political science, concentration in international affairs - in case you're interested) and attending Harvard Law School, he lived in Chicago. Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam was based there. And no, Obama did not automatically become a member of NOL just because he lived in Chicago. This may sound too obvious to merit mentioning. But, pathetically, some people actually find this to be a logical connection.

Those who question Obama’s allegiance to the U.S. seem to do so on the basis that one of his parents was a citizen of a different, non-European country (the horror!). And, of course, the fact that his distant paternal grandfather was a Muslim. Nevermind that Obama was a celebrated instructor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for 12 years and writes with profound admiration of the U.S. Constitution. Nevermind that he knows the history of the U.S. government inside and out and recounts it with enthusiasm (see the first several chapters of The Audacity of Hope). Apparently it is not enough to know and love your country to a greater extent than do many of your countrymen – this counts for nothing if you are not strictly of European descent.

Obama’s fond of the following quote by former NY Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan: “You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.” Think about this before you make claims about the candidates. Holding an opinion is acceptable, but spreading lies about Obama, McCain, Biden, or Palin is not. If you are a U.S. citizen who cares about the fate of our country, you have a moral duty to act in such a way as to promote what is right for America. This duty does not include being a mentally challenged bigot who indulges in pointless activities such as smearing candidates. It involves becoming an EDUCATED voter and making a real effort to educate others.

So do some research, for fuck’s sake.

Does anyone else find it scarey that Sarah Palin is an evangelist that believes "the end of days" is upon us. Now The United States has a nuclear arsenal of 10,500 nuclear weapons. If McCain Dies (he has had melanoma 4 times and he is the oldest person to ever run for president so it could very well happen) Evangelical hockey mom Sarah Palin will be in charge of our country and our nuclear weapons. SHE CAN'T EVEN PRONOUNCE NUCLEAR CORRECTLY! SCAREY!

I got frustrated halfway through and turned it off. Listening to her makes me want to punch kittens... and I LOVE kittens!

What exactly is it that is so terrible about having a Muslim education? I mean I realise that you are all brainwashed incompetents who know less about the Koran, and muslim teachings in general than you do about your own Bible (and considering the time i have spent discussing theology with those god awful door knocker types) what you know about your own Bible is pitiful. In fact, there is very little discrepency between the Bible and the Koran. personally, i would be far more concerned if he had belonged to one of those terrifying little evengelical churches your country has so many of...

Are none of you concerned by the Republicans campaign tactics? the attempted character assasination of Obama is so blatant i'm surprised no one is more concerned about it, but then having met Americans, perhaps i should not be so surprised that the jaw droppingly obvious has been missed by the vast majority.

Far be it for me to tell you how to live your lives... from your comments i'd rather hope that you didn't... but perhaps you should be more concerned with which of the candidates seems to be working towards fixing your floundering economy. I mean, i realise that a recession has so much potential as far as telling your grandchildren (god help us) how easy they have it, but do you REALLY want to live through one?

Anyway, enjoy the rest of your existances, i genuinly hope that there is beer and mind numbing television enough to sate your appitites and that your country some how manages to survive it's own inept governance, because without you, who would make us proud we aren't American?
