People who say that never read about or discuss politics. They pretend that they do, and that they follow celebrities as a diverting hobby from all the seriousness they're otherwise engaged in. But it's a lie. They don't follow the news, they don't educate themselves about important issues that affect everybody's lives, and they don't cast informed votes, if in fact they vote (the last presidential election had the highest turnout since 1968...all the way to almost 61%...gee, wow). It's easy to prove - hundreds of surveys have shown that people lack basic factual knowledge about most political issues affecting their government and their lives. Spending hours every day following celebs (including blogging) isn't a hobby or a diversion, it's a substitute. The irony is that you also hear a lot of ranting about politicians "not doing anything" about problems, like high gas prices. If you can't be bothered to be involved, then your complaints are easily ignored.
