Open letter to Vanity Fair Magazine

Re: Sexual Exploitation of 15 yr. old Mylie Cyrus

Congratulations on furthering the disturbing trend towards sexualizing and objectifying our teen and pre-teen girls. How very disheartening to see such a blatant act of Child Pornography in the pages of Vanity Fair. The image of a nude, under-aged girl barely covering herself with a sheet is most obviously meant to be suggestive. Using adult sexuality to sell your magazine is one thing, adding fuel to an already depraved society by publishing illegal imagery under the guise of “art” is quite another.

What a tragic message it sends to the generation who idolize Mylie Cyrus/Hannah Montana as a role model. Her parents, her staff, Vanity Fair’s editors and photographers and the media that reproduce this material have a responsibility to promote and manage this young woman, with the welfare of her legions of impressionable young fans in mind. This is another sickening example of how our society allows money to purchase sexual innocence.

We are blessed with the children in our life and we try very hard to steer them around the absolute minutiae of perversion and age-inappropriate material that seeks to defile them every day. We struggle to keep them safe from those who would prey on their naiveté and we wish for them a future without misogyny. It is horrifying to think that the stuff of pedophile’s dreams are becoming mainstream. You are setting a very dangerous precedent.

I pray that the producers at Disney, at least, will understand the implications of pimping Mylie Cyrus in plain view and that they will do what they can to preserve our trust and uphold the values and ideology of their company’s founder.
