Mastiffs are generally non-aggressive dogs, and they're pretty loyal to their family. If they happen to feel that they - or their family - is being threatened, then by all means they will attack. Maybe the assistant did something that threatened the dog...

I know Panja American Mastiffs are much more aggressive, and much more likely to attack a human being than the regular American Mastiff.

The viciousness of the dogs, or lack thereof, is still unknown. To say that dogs won't attack unles they've been trained to is stupid. A dog is an animal and animals can sometimes bite when startled. The big ones don't know their own strength and can rip a big hole in your arm without really trying. Obviously, if a dog is trained to attack, it's probably more likely to, but until we know the extent of the man's injuries, speculating about the behavior of the dogs and why/how they attacked him is pointless. Maybe they started fighting and he tried to separate them. If one of those big mofos knocked him down, another one could easily grab him by the throat and rip open his jugular. It's not uncommon that if a person has a heart attack that he will be mauled by a dog/dogs. I know this from first hand experience as it happened to someone in my family and the cause of death was ruled as a heart attack. You cannot just assume that it was the dog attack that killed him. Since he was the caretaker and familiar with the dog, I think it's very likely that's what happened . The cause of the unfortunate man's death will be determined.

1. No, the assistant "doing something" the dog didn't agree with is not an excuse, but seeing as this persons job was to look after the dogs/house he must of been there a while ergo the dogs must of known him. A dog will not just randomly go for someone they know unless severely startled, mistreated or abused.

2. Pack mentality dictates that if the top dog initiated the fight, the others would join in. Lower pack members do not randomly initiate fights without pure good reason to meaning either the top dog initiated the fight or the assistant aggrivated a lower pack member. I'm guessing the latter seeing as the pack was more then the seemingly two dogs he was mauled by.

Also, Bull Mastif's are not banned in all of the U.K, they are however banned from council estates in Dublin along with breeds such as the GSD, Doberman & the staffy because no-nothing fucks use larger & stockier breeds for "protection & guarding" and show these dogs no feeling.

The animals in question are Fila Brasileiros and that breed is banned in the UK. Dublin is heading in the right direction and the UK will follow soon. All mastiffs and bull terriers should be banned. That they're being handled and raised by idiots doesn't alter the fact that it is in their nature to kill. No-one in their right mind can say keeping a highly unpredictable dog in order to maul a human being to death is justifiable. You are correct that both bullmastiffs and fila brasileiros are aggressive dogs, and need to be trained more carefully. But the mastiff is not a "naturally" vicious dog, and painting the entire breed that way is just stupid.

People should be responsible for their dogs. Now, even if a dog attack led to this man's death--something we do not yet know--it would be an extremely rare event. Making policy based on such a rare event would betray both deep cowardice and depressing idiocy.

It's a nice idea but I've been involved in such a programme in the UK and they're not interested. It might be different in the States but chances are they've got the dog for all the wrong reasons so they last thing they'll care about is proper training or care.
