In The Little Dog Laughed, playwright Douglas Carter Beane sinks his razor-sharp teeth into a topic much in the news lately: gay Hollywood. But instead of straight actors playing gay, the satire concerns a closeted gay actor (Neal Huff) who falls for a gay-for-pay hustler (Johnny Galecki), just when his agent (Julie White) has found the perfect role to turn her client into a star: the gay lead in the film version of an Off-Broadway play. Carter Beane, who penned the screenplay for To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar and is currently creating TV shows for both NBC and Showtime, told us how realistic the scenario is.
The play includes a nude scene between Galecki and Huff, which shows off the former’s ample endowment. Were you surprised?
You don’t see Neal ’cause he has his back to the audience, but no shortcomings there either! [Laughs.] There was a golden moment the first time it was staged. You saw both of their penises, which are tremendously large, and Julie walks in on them. They cut, and Julie turned and - in all seriousness - said, “Are my earrings reflecting too much?” There was silence. Finally, I just said, “Julie, the odds of anyone looking at your ears this moment are very, very slight.”
