Casualties from the 2004 Indian tsunami: 355,000. Did they beg for help because they couldn't help themselves? No.

Casualties from the 2005 Kashmir earthquake: 180,000. Did they expect the international community to help them get up on their feet? No.

Contrast this to the first few days of the Haitian earthquake, where survivors were building roadblocks made of stone and decomposing bodies because aid was 'late', delaying access to the center of the capital. Furthermore, that they had the 'right' to it. That they 'absolutely need' outside help, because as a people, they cannot survive on their own.

And even as aid arrived, these subhumans couldn't figure out what to do with the food packets. MREs (Meal Ready to Eat) packages were stared and contemplated upon by these dumbasses because not one of them thought to open them to see beef jerky and chocolate bars!

They're an insult to what we have built as humanity, to perseverance and true grit in times of hardship. As for all you carebears out there, throw in your genetic lot with these unworthy specimens of our species.

That tsunami got huge support all over the world. In fact, it got the exact same coverage as the Haiti quake. Yes, there was a telethon almost exactly like the one tonight, full of celebrities and what not.

You're right about the Kashmir quake in a way, it did not get enough coverage as it should have, and that is due to its relative close proximity in time to the tsunami which dwarfed it.

In this case, the reason why they are making such a big fuss about this in the news, is because the entire world is watching that country now. And with that level of coverage, a real change can be done. With enough money they'll not only be able to rebuild what they lost, but surpass that in a huge way, taking them from a third world to a safe and stable country that can grow with the world. This is what makes this relief effort so exciting.

In closing, if you don't support this relief effort, just shut the fuck up, it will make the world a happier place.

(therapy service for kids) I did not donate to any relief funds because every paycheck is gone before I get it , the husband works two jobs just to make all the bills. No we don't live a life of luxury, frankly we don't do much because there's never enough $ left to even go to dinner. I am sick of our government bitching that we (working Americans) have to pony up more and then seeing billions going to non-Americans. I'm truly sorry for and suffering but as one small cog in the big machine I'm sick giving and giving to people that are entitled to money from my/our pockets because they sneak in to our country illegally or had some natural disaster bestowed on them. I need a Natural disaster to hit or be an illegal immigrant so I can,get my student loans paid, free housing, free medical coverage and food. Where is my American dream?

Sending 10 dollars to Haiti results in about 1 dollar's worth of assistance, compared to giving it to somebody who both needs it and has the capacity to put it to good use.

The sad part is that AIDS is probably the only contribution Haitians have bestowed upon the world since their independence over 200 years ago. They are a failed state, a nuisance to the world. Giving money to Haiti is wasting money. There is no reason why that country should be poor. It's a tropical country that should be a tourist haven, not to mention have some of the most fertile soil on earth. Furthermore, the damn place has been given billions over the last decade. Yet somehow those Haitians managed to fuck it up royally. They overpopulated their island, destroyed the wildlife, and now, nature is just helping to resolve the problem.

Don't get me wrong, I feel for the innocent lives lost. My heart goes out to the families. But sometimes bad things need to happen in the short-term in order for things to get better in the long-term. Hopefully after this incident, and the billions more that is going to flow into Haiti, the country will finally get its act together.

First, the cruise ships pay a per-visit fee that gets distributed among the Haitians working the ports that they visit. The people who do this work have BEGGED the cruise ships to follow through with their scheduled visits, because they have no other means of making money.

Second, what difference does physical proximity make, at least in terms of morality? If you got drunk last night and hooked up with some slut/slob, you're being just as selfish and hedonistic (if not more so) as somebody on a planned cruise vacation lying on a beach in Haiti (and supporting the locals in the process). In terms of keeping up appearances, sure, it's bad form to be seen on that beach. 99% of the celebrity stuff about Haiti (and other natural disasters) is keeping up appearances, not morality. Well, actually, it's more like 10% keeping up appearances and 90% realizing that nobody will pay attention to them after a major disaster unless they pretend to care about it, on stage.

A big chunk of the mountain of money being sent to Haiti will end up being grabbed by corrupt/criminal Haitians, and by the charities that aren't completely on the up and up. That happens whenever a big natural disaster happens with pictures and video that is compelling and can be broadcast around the world, triggering a knee-jerk reaction that results in massive donations. Once the money becomes uncountably large, the skim begins. A rational person knows that now is the time to see what will be done with the flood of relief money and supplies, before donating again. There's absolutely no need for the celebrity shows to be happening now, even as the first reports of diverted donations are beginning to be published. You can use both a head and a heart.

Haitians dying is a necessary evil. It sucks that people have to die, but as *105* points out, the world is overpopulated. This is largely because of third-world birth rates. They breed like animals and then they can't take care of their children -- causing overpopulation, which leads to limited resources, which then in turn leads to poverty.

The earth can not keep sustaining this population. To balance things out people need to die. For the sake of advancement, the fact that it is now the Haitians is a good thing. I would like to donate and I will (been to lazy) but I believe there must be some international organization to be formed just to WATCH all those money to be distributed to those who need, not the World Bank (binge of thieves) or corrupted government of Haiti. I don't understand what is the big deal. Donate or don't donate. Why abuse Haiti when it is down? They are not the most productive people in the world, but that does not mean we should make fun of them or relish in their grief.

I feel sorry for the Haitians and the families that have to endure such a tragedy. But the natives are not helping their cause. They seem vary unappreciative of the aid. They don't understand the initial difficulty in providing help to a nation with no infrastructure. It's like they are blaming the rescuers and volunteers for what the earthquake did, or for they poor state of their country prior to the earthquake. I've seen Haitians throw food away because they *thought* it was stale. One would think starving people could care less about a food's expiration date, but apparently the Haitians would rather have a 5 course meal sent to them from New York's finest restaurants. You did not see such behavior during the tsunami in South East Asia, the earthquake in Pakistan, the floods in the Midwest, or the earthquake in China. One would think a people so accustomed to living in poverty would be gracious for foreign donations, no matter what it is. Perhaps all of the aid they have been given over the years has made them spoiled for handouts.

Some countries broke free of colonial rule...and then failed to establish and maintain a successfully functioning independent government and economy. Haiti is one of them. Some countries simply don't have the material and human resources to function autonomously. Rebuilt Haiti ten times and it will fail 11 times.
