Bear in mind that this wasn't an official press release or a speech or anything like this. This was Obama making small-talk back-stage with someone after what I think was an interview? It was supposed to be off the record, but, someone overheard the conversation and leaked it.

As unimportant and inane as the comment may be in the greater context, it's just as stupid to assume that the president doesn't have any personal life or personal opinions. Yes, he's the president, but not every single action he makes every single day is political in nature. It's like being fired because you commented on last night's sitcom at the water cooler during your break.

That said, it's probably got to hurt when the president - the first president of Kanye's race even - feels that he's a jack-ass. However great Kanye thinks he is, it's the goddamned president of the United States; that's gotta carry some weight.
