As one who worked the nights for a year, paying for school while serving cocktails to dudes surrounded by chicks walking in thongs and ta-tas on the stripper pole, I like to think I have somewhat a voice of experience on the matter.

Even though you only have to be 18 to dance, most everyone working in the club - strippers included - thought it was sad when girls fresh out of high school decided to hit the stripper pole. I'll generally stand up for strippers since I saw first hand that they're not all coke-heads, sluts, whores, or undercover hookers. Most are there just paying off school loans, credit cards, or even moms trying to provide for their kids. As long as you're secure with yourself and doing it with a specific goal in mind and NOT for: A) self-esteem boost, B) body issues, C) attention...then by all means go for it. And, as we all saw in that club, rarely did anyone under 20 have that secure sense of self.

I don't get my panties in a bunch when underage performers dance around in skimpy clothes... whatever. Question it as you will, but they're not doing it for money, and not to mention, dressing that way is LEGAL. Conversely, stripping for money is extremely ILLEGAL for anyone under 18. And trust me, strip clubs are very careful in doing ID verifications to make sure their girls are of age. I know the club where I worked was extremely anal about this. Otherwise they can get shut down on the grounds of sexual exploitation of minors... i.e. - essentially offering kiddie porn!

Obviously this isn't saying that seeing a clothed Miley Cyrus dance on a stripper pole is going to turn teenage girls into strippers. But it sure is taking a step in normalizing that practice for them. And it's sad to put in teenage girls heads that this job is something "cool" and maybe even something to aspire to!
