Jefferson, Adams and others felt they had just cause to rebel against England (and a king anointed by God) because of the violation of this concept. The concept of natural rights comes from the Age of Reason, when philosophers like Rousseau, Locke and Hobbes were looking for answers to man and society's problems outside of the Church or religious doctrine. They challenged the right of kings to rule over them just because that king - and the church - claimed God gave him the power, and thus there could be no such thing as an abuse of that rule. They believed that because man has a mind and is the only creature in nature who can reason, that ability means he has certain basic natural and innate rights, like the right to life, liberty, property, privacy, bodily autonomy, happiness, etc. They are not found in holy writ, they do not come from any church doctrine. These rights are universal, and are "inalienable" because, like your mind's ability to reason, they don't come from a government or any agency on earth, so therefore no agency on earth can take them away. Any king, government or individual who tries to inflict any tyranny, enact any enslavement or deprive anyone of them is guilty of a violation of that natural law, and you have a natural right to resist.

Founding fathers all agreed on this- that's why we have our great documents now. You argue for natural rights backed by philosophy. It's an argument but a weak one in my opinion. #66 Sorry, you're quite wrong - again. Natural rights do NOT come from a"Christian theme" and 'imago dei' has nothing to do with them, nor the philosophers who conceived them. You will find not find these rights outlined in the Bible, Torah or Quran, nor will you find Jesus standing up for liberty and the right to the pursuit of property. It's man's ability to reason that gives him his rights, not Christ. And as much as you'd like to make Washington, Adams and Jefferson all Christians and thus have all the founding fathers agree with you on your Christian interpretation of natural rights, you'd be SOL there. Sorry to break this news to you, but a belief in God doesn't automatically make one a Christian. Jefferson in particular was a Deist with a healthy disdain for religious dogma. He felt any scripture was written by man and of course interpreted by him, and therefore contained no proof of God - just man. He preferred to look for the existence of God in his handiwork - in man and in nature. Read the Declaration again. You will see God described in a Deist's terms - "the Creator" and "Nature's God" - NOT God the Father, or Our Lord. Too bad if you find the concept of natural rights "weak" - but those rights are the concept this country is founded on. We are not a theocracy and we did not fight a war with England for religious freedom.

Our government is designed on Locke's concept of "social contract", which is why we don't have a monarchy. We allow ourselves to be governed by a central authority by consent, and our consent alone gives the government its authority. Whatever rights we might lose in that consent, we trade for social order. Your argument that without God there is no morality is a consequentialist one - without anyone to punish us and without fear of the hereafter we'd all just murder each other and treat each other like shit because we could, right? Which is, of course, why all murders are atheists and why it was only the devout and pious who helped anyone on 9/11.

And, of course, in what is the best Christian tradition, you mean exactly the opposite of your statement in your last sentence.
