Jun 28 2009Billy Mays dies at 50

TV pitchman Billy Mays was found dead in his Tampa home this morning. Early reports are saying he suffered a head injury during a flight landing yesterday which the FAA is saying was his fault for not wearing a seat belt. TMZ reports:
After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:
"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."
We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."
I wasn't even going to post about this until a surprising amount of e-mails rolled in. Turns out OxiClean is a more prominent thread in our nation's tapestry than I realiz- Wait. It gets out hooker blood doesn't it? Now I get it, and 100 gallons, please.
Rest in Peace, Billy.

RIP

Act fast and you will not only get hit on the head, but we will throw in a once in a lifetime offer of death. That's right, but you better act fast as IM FRIKN FIRST BIOTCHES!!!

NO WAY
YOU SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH WHEN BILLY MAYS IS TALKING!
6. Mike - June 28, 2009 1:50 PM
Dear God, when I said I wanted Billy Mays to die I meant his career, not the man himself. Sorry for the misunderstanding...
7. Pitchman - June 28, 2009 1:51 PM
One lousy frikn minute. See folks, if you don't act fast, there will be no glory left for you... only shame and ridicule.
8. twzzlrgirl - June 28, 2009 1:51 PM
Good Lord...everyone is dropping like flies. Who could possibly be next?? I know, how about the annoying SOB who put up all the "Dance Your Ass Off" ads that are currently hovering around the SuperFish page.
And when I scroll down the ads follow me.....Son of a .....
RIP, Billy Mays (by the way)...it should've been shamwow guy instead.

Couldn't stand Billy's screaming. Leno had him on his show and Billy explained that he used to sell products on a boardwalk and he had to be loud to be heard. Didn't seem so annoying after that. RIP. I'd like to slap-chop Vince across the throat, then use a Sham-wow to soak up any blood evidence. : )
13. kerplunk - June 28, 2009 2:03 PM
Billy Mays was a class act. He was one of the good ones. RIP, Billy.

This sucks. I loved Billy Mays. Rest in Peace.
16. bluepixie - June 28, 2009 2:10 PM
How is wearing your seatbelt supposed to keep you safe from objects falling out of storage bins?? Stupid FAA.
17. Kristi - June 28, 2009 2:10 PM
This is just so tragic. I really liked Billy Mays. My heart goes out to all his family and loved ones.
FAA - way to stay classy - blame the passenger for getting hit on the head because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt?! How does wearing a seatbelt protect you from head injury due to falling luggage from overhead compartments - oh WAIT, seatbelts don't protect your head! Wearing a seatbelt will never protect you from objects falling on your head (which I've discovered from a car accident I was in) Use your brain, FAA. Way to "spin control".
18. Newcastle - June 28, 2009 2:14 PM
People, think about it. Shit falling out of bins generally doesn't strike you in the head if you are in your seat. Sounds like he fell out of his seat and shit THEN fell out of the bins and struck him in the head.
19. cadcat - June 28, 2009 2:17 PM
@18 Yes, it can happen. I had something fall out and hit me on the head, and I was in my seat.
20. tvo - June 28, 2009 2:19 PM
wow I just saw him on Conan this week promoting his new show..
21. twzzlrgirl - June 28, 2009 2:20 PM
According to the FAA, if Natasha Richardson had been wearing a seatbelt on that ski slope, she would be alive today.
What a bunch of jackasses....

24. Ihji96 - June 28, 2009 2:29 PM
My heart goes out to his family, may he rest in peace. I actually liked the dude. My son loved him, said he had charisma and could sell anything. I tend to agree. Infomercials will never be the same again.
25. RJ - June 28, 2009 2:49 PM
This sucks. Always enjoyed the guy. Had been watching Pitchmen and it was cool to get to see a little of the behind the scenes. Billy seemed like a pretty decent guy and a hardworking individual. RIP, Billy...

NOW WHEN I WATCH INFOMERCIALS I WILL NO LONGER SEE BILLY MAYS EXCEPT WHAT IS LEFT OF HIS OXYCLEAN.
GOODNIGHT SWEET PRINCE, YOU WILL BE MISSED.
35. cavy - June 28, 2009 3:25 PM
I'm so bummed out! I feel so bad for Billy's family and his friends, especially Sully. This is horrible - what the fuck is going on with all these deaths? And everyone is passing away WAY TOO YOUNG! Jesus, I hope to be traveling and having a great life at 50...62...etc....this is heart breaking!
RIP Billy - we love you and you will be greatly missed. <3

I wished him permanent laryngitis so he couldn't make anymore frickin' annoying commercials, but certainly not death. This is one sad, bizarre week...
40. A - June 28, 2009 4:01 PM
Why is everyone dieing this week?
41. alfalfa - June 28, 2009 4:19 PM
I can't believe he's gone. He was an infomercial icon.
42. missywissy - June 28, 2009 4:36 PM
We run to the tv when Billy Mays is on. Seriously. He was comical (why is he always yelling?) yet mesmerizing. Kind of an inside family joke to want to watch Billy Mays.
I can't stand the shamwow guy, but I guess that will be his predecessor.
RIP Billy, didn't know ya, but you seemed alright.
43. G. Reaper - June 28, 2009 5:00 PM
Everyone is dying because everyone dies.
Billy apparently wasn't a pervert like Carradine or Jackson, but we all have to go sometime.
Now matter how famous, powerful or rich you get, death, the great equalizer, is gonna find you sooner or later...

What a weird week.
Not a great time to be a celebrity.
46. Alli Watermelon - June 28, 2009 5:44 PM
#16...That's what I was wondering. What does him not wearing his seatbelt have to do with objects suddenly falling on his head? RIP, Billy! =(
47. mafme - June 28, 2009 5:48 PM
I hated him at first, then he started to grow on me to the point where i actually looked forward to his commercials. Then he did that spot for ESPN which was simply awesome.
So stuff fell on his head and that's because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt? Shaw.
48. justifiable - June 28, 2009 6:06 PM
Goddamn it, I really liked him. Stupid slow brain bleed. It happens to a lot more people than you'd think - you hit your head hard enough and next thing you "don't feel well", you go to bed because you don't want to be a wuss or make a fuss and next thing you know you wake up dead.
49. ROUGH--king of fap - June 28, 2009 6:59 PM
The death week aint over, we still have a couple of hours to go....
50. Spider-Man - June 28, 2009 7:14 PM

51. Mama Pinkus - June 28, 2009 7:32 PM
by all accounts in real life he was a sweet, generous, well-respected guy; my sympathies to his family and friends
52. Lenny - June 28, 2009 7:36 PM
Another icon gone! This is a rough week to be a celeb
53. Columbo - June 28, 2009 7:49 PM
Hey 26: If you're counting dead celebrities, you also got Natasha Richardson and Vegas Entertainer Danny Gans on May 1. So that's 7. Would the eighth be Chastity Bono turning into Chaz Bono? Just askin'...
54. saywha? - June 28, 2009 7:50 PM
were drugs involved with this one also?
55. Darren - June 28, 2009 8:09 PM

56. Charles - June 28, 2009 8:19 PM
Wow this is too sad. I love watching Billy work his magic on the screen. Guess Pitchmen is canceled now? :(
57. Rachael - June 28, 2009 8:19 PM
:(
I am NOT a happy camper. Pitchmen was my new favorite show! Now how will Anthony Sullivan make fun of Billy without looking like a total dick?
Not fair.

Billy Mays "there!"
59. zakkmiester - June 28, 2009 8:30 PM
I hope you're peddling things in heaven billy
RIP.
60. Rich - June 28, 2009 9:26 PM
I love the FAA spokepersons quote, to the effect of ' If he was wearing his seatbelt he would not have gotten hurt'. What the hell is the seat belt gonna protect you from when there are things falling from above? The FAA is nothing but bullshit & lies. Look at all their excuses & things that they never corrected when told to do so by the group that studies & makes suggestions on air safety. Example- the flight that crashed in Clarence Center , New York, over 4 months ago killing all on board!!
61. Rich - June 28, 2009 9:31 PM
The celebrities die in threes -Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett & Michael Jackson, but wait ,act now & we will include Billy Mays
62. Tawmie - June 28, 2009 9:46 PM
Chuck Norris once tried to roundhouse kick Billy Mays. Before his foot even left the ground, Chuck was already on his first of three easy payments of $29.95.
RIP Billy
63. I'm so Vapid - June 28, 2009 10:17 PM
I think the Police need to interview that Vince--- Sham WoW Dude... I think he disguised himself as luggage to conquer the infomercial world!
Just a thought.....
64. SATAN - June 28, 2009 10:18 PM
@42,
if that's your family's idea of an inside joke, you should all go fuck yourselves.
65. Thats some bullshit - June 28, 2009 10:30 PM
So a seatbelt was supposed to stop things from dropping on his head. I get it. How about a softer landing next time, you know, one where the fucking tire doesnt blow out while you're landing the plane. Assholes. I hated this asshole too but the FAA is full of shit sometimes.
66. Thats some bullshit - June 28, 2009 10:37 PM
Britney Spears is next this week.
67. TBuff - June 29, 2009 12:08 AM
I didn't pay much attention to him until recently, but Pitchmen was a quality show. At the very least, the Discovery Channel is losing a good character. Please just don't take Benjamin Bailey next...
68. NastyBedazzler - June 29, 2009 12:39 AM
What the fuck? Billy Mays kicked ass, this is extremely unfortunate.
69. HoodFellaz - June 29, 2009 12:54 AM

R.I.P. Billy.
70. stephiphany - June 29, 2009 1:07 AM
So wearing a seat belt stops falling objects from landing on your head? I'll remember that next time.
Anyway, I liked his commercials. I'll miss the yelling.
71. Grant - June 29, 2009 1:20 AM
Billy Mays will probably become more popular by association with all the other celebs that died this week

vince is super-awesome. i love watching vince do his gig. i always thought he would have been the guy who did the whole selling of stuff on the jersey boardwalk but no, it was billy. but vince does have that sleazy east coast accent.
75. Fuck U - June 29, 2009 2:46 AM
Shit why can't useless bitches like: Lindsey BLowhan,Shitney Spears,

Fuck! why doesn't those two useless cocksuckers Spencer dicklover Pratt and that useless closet slut of his die already?
There is just no justice in the fucking world.

@80 fuck YOU. your comment annoyed the fuck out of me.
82. Prattletale - June 29, 2009 10:59 AM
I think the FAA is going to sink for what they said. Wearing the seat belt wouldn't have stopped him from being hit in the head from stuff falling from the overhead compartments or elsewhere.
That's like saying that if someone went bonkers and started throwing punches at other passengers that wearing a seat belt would have kept them from being hit.
The spokesperson's comment was insensitive and completely inappropriate. What fucktards.

this is hilarious. i'm assuming no one listened to this on the radio. a radio station here in ottawa, canada said about a month ago (or maybe less) "let's start a rumor adn just see how far it can get out of hand" pretty much just to show how the media works. And the guy on the radio just made it up that Billy Mays died at age 50... so i'm assuming this is part of that.

Megan, this is not a rumor, unfortunately. I work with Media Enterprises (the company behind many of the As Seen On TV products) and he has, in fact, passed.
I have had the pleasure of working with Billy Mays. Although many people associate him with being the loud, larger-than-life personality booming from their television, he was also one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met. He was certainly one-of-a-kind and will be missed terribly. I left a lasting condolence for his family at http://www.tributes.com/national/news/2

Billy Mays died of heart disease. The head incident is obsolete but still showed how dicks FAA are..
93. blah blah - June 30, 2009 1:53 PM
ASSHOLE airline.
I like that someone died and they just blatantly said "it was their own fault, we don't care."
I don't even know who this guy is (UK) but anyway if he was injured he should have sought medical help. Not sure who's fault that was. But like the other people said, things falling on your head have nothing to do with seatbelts. I like that they didn't even bother to say "our condolences" or "this was a freak accident" no. Seatbelts save lives, they just do. We all know that, so just repeat it even if it doesn't apply to the situation. If you want to be protected from everything just wear a seatbelt all the time, even when walking down the street. It will repel any out of control busses, murderers etc.
I mean what about that BrazilParis plane crash? Clearly they were all NOT wearing seatbelts. Idiots.
94. ace - July 1, 2009 12:39 AM
Another "celebrity" who was 50 just died. He had a lot going for him.
May Billy Mays rest in peace despite some of the negative things people say.
95. Wank - July 21, 2009 2:29 AM
Too bad about Billy Mays. He was a decent man even though he hawked crap merchandise.
Glad to hear about pervert Jackson's death though.
