Natasha Richardson dies from ski injury
After conflicting reports on her condition Tuesday and word today that she had suffered irreparable brain damage, Natasha Richardson's ordeal came to a tragic end when she passed away today from a head injury suffered while skiing in Canada. The AP reports:
"Liam Neeson, his sons (Micheal and Daniel), and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha," the statement said. "They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."
The statement did not give details on the cause of death for Richardson, who suffered a head injury when she fell on a beginner's trail during a private ski lesson at the luxury Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec. She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York.
It was a sudden and horrifying loss for her family and friends, for the film and theater communities, for her many fans and for both her native and adoptive countries. Descended from at least three generations of actors, Richardson was a proper Londoner who came to love the noise of New York, an elegant blonde with large, lively eyes, a bright smile and a hearty laugh.
Rest in Peace, Natasha.

Rest in peace Natasha, and may God be with your family.
5. Ugh! - March 18, 2009 9:24 PM
This is soo horrible. You wouldn't think you could die from a trivial little fall/bump on the head, but it just goes to show you never realize how delicate life is. Most of us feel pretty invincible or don't want to "make a fuss" about things. I heard she had sent back the first ambulance that came to the resort to pick her up because she said she was feeling fine [I guess protocol had it that one would automatically be called and the person checked out in hospital]. Let this be a lesson--better to take things too seriously than to lightly. If you bump your head, get your butt to the hospital and get checked out ASAP. Tragic for those little boys and that hot husband of hers.
RIP

They're reporting that she was on life support with a beating heart but completely brain dead, so they decided to pull the plug. I guess they didn't want an Obama supporter in the family.

Wow this is real sad and I feel kinda bad...
Just this afternoon I called up my friend and said jokingly - "what's up with all these white women falling??" Natasha Richardson, Jessica Lange... Dare I say it - these thing happen in 3's...
can the next one be Paris Hilton?
One thing is falling - another is dying - and this one is simply sad.
Rest in peace, Natasha...

19. Noelle - March 18, 2009 9:53 PM
@12... this is one instant where it shouldn't resort in some political remark. Grow up
Not everyone thinks that a person should be kept on life support when they are brain dead, regardless of whether or not their heart is beating. She would have never woken up, and would have been permanently attached to feeding tubes, that's no way to live. Most people don't want to live that way.

Yes, this is sad, etc etc, but how many people die of far worse things everyday??
Babies and children die of cancers and diseases, in car accidents, women of murder, cancer, men in war, accidents, etc etc and we sympathize for a second then we say nothing and move on....and here is this woman- just because shes famous- its splashed all over the news for the next 2 weeks!!!! Ehhhh.
She died. Thats sad. Boo hoo. But I refuse to feel sorry for and have to endure 100 hours of tv coverage because she was skiing around in $5k worth of ski gear on her $20k holiday and bumped her head. 2 days then the media needs to get over it! NEXT!

So Sad It such a Tragic event
I wonder if she was on some type of Blood Thinner (like Coumadin).
I had a family member that died after she tripped on a sidewalk and hit her head. She was fine until about a hour after when she developed a severe headache, dizziness and nausea - went to the Hospital and died a short time latter. It was almost exactly the same way that Natasha died except she was on Coumadin. Come to find out later that what happened to her was not unheard of for people that hit their heads while they're on a blood Thinner

91. justifiable - March 19, 2009 12:58 AM
#74 All she had to do was take a few asprin after hitting her head and that would've done it for killing the clotting factor. The leaking blood in her brain from a torn vessel would've kept on pooling, increasing the pressure and causing more swelling, so by the time she developed an excrutiating headache hours later she may have been past saving. Sometimes intercranial bleeding from an impact is too severe to clot even if you're not on any meds at all - it just depends on the injury. Hopefully people will now know that if you hit your head hard enough to lose consciousness, go the ER and get checked out.
( Sorry about your relative - it reminds me of someone I know who should've won the Darwin Awards. He took aspirin the day before open-heart surgery - he brought it with him and self-dosed - and they nearly lost him on the table by almost bleeding out. Not saying this isn't shitty n all...but seriously I had no idea who this chick was. RIP person I did not know. I'll add you into my prayers for the thousands upon thousands of other unkown people who die everyday...that I also have no idea who they are.
Ah if only when I died hundreds of people pretended to give a shit...but that'll never be the case.
Yea, seriously is crappy tho.

wow I'm impressed with the insensitive bastard comments... you people talking shit should work on skills that will help you score a better paying job, because if you're complaining about her you have to have some wealth envy issues. She didn't do anything out of the ordinary. this normal woman had an accident and tragic at that. I visit this site to poke fun of assholes with an inflated sense of self importance, she was never on this list.

Shocked? I think not, I been skiing at Mont Tremblant 3 times this month (not last weekend) but can tell you the conditions on the mountain are known to be all ice.
All the so called "easy" slopes are on the outter sides of the mountain so they get the blast of wind head on ... even Canadian knows this and this is why a death at Mt Treblant happens every 48 hours (some teenager hit a tree last week and died at Horseshoe)
This is also why Mt Treblant has a 4% loyality tax so they have the best PR team in the world ... keep saying she got up and joked around and nothing about ice on the flats/

Most actresses are out of control, insecure egomaniacs - she was very self-deprecating and down to earth, she didn't demand special treatment or publicists, which may be why a lot of you aren't too familiar with her work. She was low-key in her life, so when she acted you saw the character, not the actress. When she wanted to pursue acting she didn't trade on the family dynasty name, she went to Leeds (probably the US equivalent of Milwaukee) and worked on stage because she wanted to succeed or fail on her own merits. She earned her place and her Tony by hard work, and she was damn good. She seemed to have been a lovely person both inside and out, and sadly the world has far too few of those.

Really sad to hear.
My thoughts go out to her and her loved ones.

Who gives a fucking shit? Millions of Africans are suffering with HIV and AIDS and are dying every mother fucking day in agony. How many Iraqi children have died in the last 20 years due to the US sanctions against their nation and yeah it evilly includes medical embargoes. Why? Why should children pay the price of the sinister plots of grown tyrants? How many people are suffering on our streets in our own country? How many brilliant young minds suffer the grind of poverty here?
No I don't care about this actress at all. I feel sorry for her of course but it does not affect me whatsoever nor does it any of you and you know it. Don't act like something important has happened. It amazes me how callous the common asshole is for the suffering of the multitudes but oh when someone famous dies in a freak accident on a luxurious vacation all of the compassion that has been placed aside for real human beings finally surfaces.
And so bless this woman's family and all the millions that are suffering around the world. Those that do not luxuriate in fame.
116. mikeock - March 19, 2009 6:50 AM
Honestly, I can't wrap myself up in the sadness of every person who dies. The downfall of this is now they're probably going to require every skier to wear a helmet, like some sort of short-busser.
I hope she donated her organs. I'd love to be the guy who gets her liver. I bet it's pretty.

#115 You can always find a condition that's worse in the world so that's a crap argument. If you get fired it really doesn't help you to think about some poor kid in Darfur who's dying because that doesn't help him, nor does it help you not stress over how you're gonna pay your rent. It's hard for people to put a face on a suffering mass of people they don't know - no one ever loved a mass but we identify with individuals. And if you can't have any compassion for a single person's tragic death, famous or not, then I call bullshit on your loud bleating for the fate of the multitudes. And I do believe that by your definition that makes you the uncommon asshole.
Dick Cheney is still walking around. Bernie Madoff lives. Gwyneth Paltrow and Barbra Streisand woke up this morning. That proves the universe is not a level playing field.
Richardson used her position to do a lot of fundraising for amFAR. What exactly have you done?
121. mikeock - March 19, 2009 7:25 AM
We have to take Hollywood people off the pedestal, like they are somehow better or different than anyone else. I'm sorry she died, but like 118 said - we all die. She's no different than anyone else. Every family has a sad story to tell.
122. justifiable - March 19, 2009 7:31 AM
#117 "Who gives a fucking shit?" =/= "I didn't mean to sound like I don't care by the way."
I don't know your old lady friend but to be left widowed and sisterless at 82 and have to work to support yourself can't be so damn bad - because there are worse things in the world, right? You can't have it both ways.
123. I don't care by the way - March 19, 2009 7:45 AM
Go fuck your mother in the ass. You know what I mean. There are good people all over the world that suffer because they do not have the thousands and millions that it takes to lead a life of leisure. I think it is a disgrace for a woman over 80 to have to work. That's what I said.
The actress - don't know her. She came from an "acting family". Life was always a joy for her. She never went to sleep hungry and in fact always ate delicious meals I am sure. And she never had to work a day in her life. Acting is not work. Making money hand over fist is capitalism at it's finest. I wish the whole capitalistic system would fail.
I hope it fails. Ha ha ha ha ha!

126. justifiable - March 19, 2009 8:13 AM
#123 And you can take your puerile little idiotic socialist notions and cram them, you poser humanitarian. YOU don't even know what the hell you mean - it's called a thought process, try finding one sometime. You're one of those tedious knee-jerk morons who think every poor person is a saint and anyone with money (even if they worked for it) who never had the privelige of starving is the Antichrist In your book ,of course, creating art , music or literature isn't work, because anything that doesn't actively feed people is a waste, right? Spoken like someone whose main motivation is 99% jealousy about never had either money or a creative impulse.
It IS a disgrace that a woman over 80 should have to work, so I'm sure you'll be selling your TV and giving the money to her because it'll spare you from seeing any more acting that isn't work, as well as capitalism and the commercials that feed it.
If capitalism fails it won't make the world economy a keen place for Darfur , distribute all the wealth equally or feed anyone poor - in fact, just the opposite. And since you claim - with great disdain - not to follow any of Hollywoods "pseudodemigods", what the righteoius fuck are you even doing on a celebrity gossip site?

Also, it just goes to show how little people respect others and themselves. No worth for anyone. The Superficial isnt the only site to have idiots comment. Go to Perez Hilton or any other site that garners MANY comments.
It's a pattern that, ironically, the ones who think they're anomalous are following. They're just being shocking to spite the majority. Talk about being predictable.

#135: According to your logic, people should also wear helmets while walking around in winter weather because they might slip and fall on the ice. You sound like a soccer-mom who puts her kids in padded rooms because you're afraid that they'll poke their eye out if they open a bottle of water by themselves. Mindless irresponsiblity?" Go make your hubby dinner and wash the dishes before he beats you across the face.
P.S. Has anyone ever heard of wearing a helmet while skiing (besides people who ski in the Olympics)? Didn't think so. "
165. fine linen - March 19, 2009 1:12 PM
Recreational ski and snowboard helmets are manufactured to a standard that provides protection at 14 mph or less, whereas it is common to ski and snowboard between 25 and 40 mph, he says.
In other words, #35, when you're going at speeds between 25 and 40 mph and you hit a fixed object like a tree, whether you're wearing a helmet isn't going to matter.

I am not a poser humanitarian any more than any other person who feels sorry for the poor helpless victims of greed and the cowards who wield them. Look at what the Romans did to the rest of Europe 2000 years ago my white elitist ignorant little asshole. They conquered them and killed them by the millions only because they lived in a part of the world that was more advanced culturally and technologically. They were certainly no smarter than the celtic and germanic peoples inherently were. The same holds true today. We dominate and destroy other peoples simply becase we have benefitted from being "ahead" of them. Look at how fast the Japanese caught up to us.
All is fair in love and war the crooks say.
Yeah I am a liberal and I prefer socialism. I just can't see how Alex Rodrigues is worth what hundreds of millions to play baseball? Howard Stern and Rush signed contracts worth half a billion to run their dirty mouths on the radio. Why do people listen to them in the first place.

#49 Joe:
The Montreal hospital was Sacre Coeur de Montreal. It is associated with the Universite de Montreal.
You have speculated that the hospital did not have the necessary CT scans, etc, to properly diagnose Ms. Richardson, blaming the Canadian universal health care system for not equipping all hospitals with adequate technology. I’ve lived in Montreal and also in very small Canadian cities, and I can assure you that there are CT and MRI capabilities in all Canadian hospitals, with the possible exception of VERY small towns, in which case patients would be airlifted to the nearest large hospital with these technologies. Montreal is a city with a 3.6 million population. Rest assured, Sacre Coeur has CT scans.
From what I’ve read, Ms. Richardson herself denied she needed medical help, and it wasn’t until she developed a severe headache that she allowed for medical attention. By this time, it was already too late. No CT scan, even if they'd had one at Mont Tremblant, the ski resort, could have saved her by this time. She was already brain dead by the time she arrived at Sacre Coeur and the family moved her to New York so that family and friends could see her one last time, not because New York had the nearest CT scan.
I understand all American ski resorts have MRI and CT scans in their lobbies. It's truly a shame Canada doesn't.
This is a staggering tragedy. With all the celebutards out there contributing nothing to society, Natasha Richardson was a classy, talented lady. She represented what Hollywood USED to be.

people shouldn't be surprised by the ignorant disrespectful comments here as we are on the superficial.com website, it attracts all kinds of people good and bad
people keep on saying so what people die from AIDS, cancer, she was rich etc and most of those things are true but being a celebrity puts you in the public eye so all that happens to you is seen and talked about by many as many have seen it. society is fond of elevating celebrities to an almost godly status so don't be surprised when their deaths achieve the same attention.
i think its a shame that some people are being truly disgusting in their comments as natasha wasn't one of those actresses that craved the limelight, that sought to be in front of the paparazzis lenses, that got upto silly mischief that most of the celebrities mentioned here do. but yet her death has really brought out the worst in people,
fine you didn't know her, fine maybe they shouldn't be blowing up her death so much on the tv and in newspapers but someone has died. and i know most of these silly commenters are vomitting stupidity cloaked in the bravery the internet provides, they wouldn't appreciate if they lost someone close to them.

#179/181 Nice try, Upchuck Darwin - and as usual you fall pathetically short of the mark. But how nice to see your spyrochete-riddled brain is quickly reducing itself to soup - talking to yourself while pretending to be other people is a sure sign of decompensation. Just as an aside, "idiotic dolt" is a redundancy, but since that was no doubt daddy's favorite name for you I'm sure you use it inappropriately and often out of sheer sentimental value.
Imperialism denotes the indirect political or economic control of powerful states over weaker ones, and there is not an a priori connection between it and a privately controlled method of producing wealth. Just because Lenin defined it as the ultimate stage of capitalism doesn't make it an absolute notion. Now perhaps you'll stew your brain gravy down a little more explaining to us how planned economy communist China's imperialist takeover of Tibet is capitalism at its finest, and expand on how the socialist Soviet Union's imperialist foray into Afghanistan to support the PDPA against the mujahedin enlarged their rich capitalist stronghold.
Is it soup yet?

#188 There's a lot of envy fromthe have-nots here today . She was a realperson who valued her family and her work the most,. She was vacationing with her kids, not out drinkung and driving like Paris Hilton or LL and she didn't make the money for the vacation by screwing over or hurting anyone else. I'm sure saying "fuck her she died wearing 5K ski equipment" makes all of you feel like real big people, so much better than anyone else because you don't have that. I don't have it either but why should I be jealous and resentful because she did? From what I read about her she never went around thinking or acting like she was better than anyone else so your sour grapes reaction just shows your true colors as bitter crappy human beings.

Awful! Who would go to the doctor for that? It's scary.
Also awful that her only movie the news can remember is the "Parent Trap" remake. "Gothic" usually pops in my mind.

191 Have nots? Do you guys think it's funny that your crooked Wall Street thugs have ruined our economy? You right wing wackos and your republican administration went through $10 trillion? I bet you coward asswipes are pissed not that the new president is trying to make peace with Iran too. Are you proud now that china and russia have both fucked with us in one week? What do you think we should do, invade all three? Yeah and do it with your kids and $$$.
Have nots, the useless eaters. You heartless phony waste of life energy. Your matter would have been better used as a boil on the ass of a cow.
Jealousy? When was the last time you saw a flag draped coffin of some poor american soldier coming home to rot in the ground in a box? Since that person was "poor" their life was meaningless. Go fuck yourself.

193 chill, I think 191 meant people who are always jealous when anyone has something they don't, rather than everyone in the country who's taking a hard hit because of Wall Street assholes. We're all going to be have nots for a long time thanks to them. But I see a lot of haters that are pissed off that she had money to go skiing so why should they feel sorry she died? I think that's childish. She had nothing to do with the current mess, she didn't profit from it so they should save it for the people who deserve it like the republicans and the Bush admin, the AIG assholes and Madoff's wife who wants to keep their multi millions that they ripped off people for rather than her. I was going to say that no matter if your rich or poor no life is meaningless but when it comes to those guys I might be wrong.

193 you're right. I have nothing negative to say about the lovely lady and I am saddened by her misfortune. I have pent up rage against the wretchedness of society at large and the war-mongering and exclusiveness and criminality of our plutocracy. They only think that they matter and we don't and as a man with a full set it angers me.
I did not mean to sound as though it was anything other than a tragedy for this woman but for the love of whatever gods, there are millions dying nameless whose lives are not priveleged and they die without dignity and honor.
Peace.

#195 These are all valid things to be enraged about - I love that AIG execs are getting death threats. These clueless fuckers STILL don't get it and when I hear Wall Street and the banks feeling sorry for themselves and whining about how they "earned" those bonuses I'm all for stringing them up or calling for a little gillotine action before we seize all their assets. I want them to pay and pay dearly.
But I don't think feeling bad and taking a moment to reflect on this woman's untimely death takes away from the tragedy of someone anonymous - millions do go unreported but for many of those there are greiving families left like Neeson and their children and her mother and sister and their pain is just the same. Somehing as senseless as this makes me realize how I appreciate my family and how fragile life can be and how I shouldn't waste it.
Peace too.

I can't believe all of these political and sexual comments made on a site that is supposed to be about the death of a wife, mother, and actress, but most of all a HUMAN BEING!! For the people making these horrible, evil, and totally out of line comments, you are either really lonely and screaming for attention, mentally retarded, or just plain demented with no life other than to make fun of a tradegy.
The reason Natasha Richardson's death is so public is because she was an Actress, known to the pubic, so it is public news. It does not make any one else's death less horrific or sad, it is just the venue she is protrayed in. Please people take a moment and think about what you are writing and saying about a fellow human beings death. It makes you wonder why there is so much evil in this world, because people make rude, pathetically feeble comments about death. what if it was your family member that was being spoken about.!!
To Natasha's Family: May you all find peace in God's love and rejoice in the memory of your loved one. My prayers are with you all. God bless you.

To Natasha's Family: May you all find peace in God's love
Why must they look to God's love for peace? They can look to the love Natasha showed them in real life for peace.
