Jan 27 2009Jessica Alba defends her intelligence
Jessica Alba took to her MySpace blog today to defend telling a TMZ reporter to "Be Sweden ... Be neutral" about her feud with Bill O'Reilly. (She called him an "asshole.") TMZ and Big Bill decided to rip on Jessica for not saying Switzerland until she pulled a little Wikipedia action on their asses:
Hey Guys,
Jay_eh here. I wanted to share with everyone in the ibeatyou and MySpace communities my experiences at the inauguration last week, so I put together a little video.
Before I get to the video, I want to clear some things up that have been bothering me lately. I find it depressing that in the midst of perhaps the most salient time in our country's history, individuals are taking it upon themselves to encourage negativity and stupidity. Last week, Mr. Bill O'Reilly and some really classy sites (i.e.TMZ) insinuated I was dumb by claiming Sweden was a neutral country. I appreciate the fact that he is a news anchor and that gossip sites are inundated with intelligent reporting, but seriously people...it's so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland. Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden_during_World_War_II if you want to see what I was referring to. I appreciate the name calling and the accurate reporting. Keep it up!!
Now on to more important things...like our new President.
TMZ has since apologized, and for the record, I'd like to point I never called Jessica Alba dumb. Everyone here knows I'm a bastion of journalistic research when I'm not making shit up. However, I will call Jessica Alba dumb now for referring to herself as "Jay_eh." 4 Realz? That's hella lame. Hella lame.

I'm sorry, but her kid looks like an ugly monkey.
6. Cash - January 27, 2009 4:27 PM
What a moron. Even O'Reilly admits it when he slips up, but she can't come clean and say "Yeah I was flustered, and meant to say 'Switzerland.' I'm not perfect, you totally caught me. Awesome for you." Instead she has to mull through wikipedia, praying to god there's *something* in there to validate her.
I liked this chick better when I was a teenager and she was walking around in bikini's on that stupid show with the dolphin, but it's been all downhill since Dark Angel. And who besides a couple of D-bags gives their infant a faux hawk? I mean really?
7. Tim - January 27, 2009 4:31 PM
I would have much more respect for her if she had said only "Watch more Swedish porn."
8. testing - January 27, 2009 4:32 PM
I have always hated Jessica Alba, but have to give her the win in this idiotic debate.
but can I point out that when talking about WWII isnt being neutral a morally unethical choice! Why tell somebody be like countries who ignored Nazis?
9. shannon2 - January 27, 2009 4:34 PM
hahahaha...Jessica Alba is smarter than Bill O'Reilly AND the people at TMZ!
JESSICA ALBA!
TMZ needs to fire some retards.
10. Newt - January 27, 2009 4:34 PM
In effect, Sweden during WWII ignored the greater moral issues and played both sides for profit[1] At no time were they seriously threatened by invasion from the Allies or the third Reich.
The above quoted from the very Wiki page the genius Jessica Alba referred to...
Yeah way to go... Passives profiting from the Holocaust.

Actually her remark is still highly appropriate - telling the TMZ reporter to stay neutral and profit from the hostilities between the Allied Asscheeks (Alba) and the Axis Nazis (O'Reilly and Faux News).
14. Carl - January 27, 2009 4:51 PM
I'm a little confused. So Jessica Alba is being joked for saying Sweden is a neutral country? The confusing part is Sweden IS a neutral country so what was she wrong about?
15. Nugaloopagus - January 27, 2009 4:52 PM
I read it. She is an idiot. Because Sweden played both sides of WWII does not make them the "neutral" country. The neutral country was, is and forever will be known as Switzerland.
Own up to it you dumbass. You obviously don't get hired for your higher learning skills.
16. melanie - January 27, 2009 4:52 PM
Hey Cash - lots of people give their babies "faux mohawks". It is kinda the only thing you can do when the hair is too thin to put in a barrett. well they could just slick it down, but the faux hawk is cute... all the kids i see have it... so i guess there are lots of "d-bags" out there...
17. duh - January 27, 2009 4:56 PM
Sweden has not directly participated in armed warfare for almost 200 years.
18. Chaz - January 27, 2009 4:59 PM
If you're going to write a blog entry defending yourself, at least use the the thesaurus properly. "A salient time in our country" makes no sense. Times aren't salient. Important, crucial, whatever. Salient sounds like somebody trying too hard to use big words.
19. StraightCashHomey - January 27, 2009 5:00 PM
The drooling halfwit called 'Jessica Alba' should close her festering gob and not attempt grown-up conversation. She may, however, continue to pose, bikini-clad, on all fours on chaise lounges - delicious ass pointed toward the camera, please. Any sounds other than moans of sexual pleasure emanating from her should be strictly prohibited.
20. Moses - January 27, 2009 5:01 PM
Yeah, the Swiss were 100% neutral. Well, except for converting huge amounts of Nazi gold (including gold taken from Holocaust victims) into currency (francs) that the Nazis could use to finance their war efforts. Except for that.
21. TYPING IN CAPS MAKES IT TRUE - January 27, 2009 5:01 PM
ZOMG I SAW IT ON WIKIPEDIA SO IT MUST BE TRUE!
Epic fail Jessica....once you start referencing wikipedia you lose.
22. Vince Lombardi - January 27, 2009 5:04 PM
1. The common euphemism is "neutral like Switzerland." No one says "Sweden" in a sentence as a euphemism for neutrality, unless you're a brainless git.
2. Remember that "Stockholm Syndrome" originated in Sweden.
3. Neither the Nazis nor the Soviets took an interest in Sweden because, after all, Sweden is full of Swedes. The Allies were convinced by the Norwegians, who are far more intelligent (altho we do eat lutefisk), that Sweden was full of Swedes and therefore of little more use than the French in time of war.
4. I'm an American of Norwegian descent and I support this message.
23. the "Actually" guy - January 27, 2009 5:07 PM

27. facts - January 27, 2009 5:15 PM
Sweden has maintained an official policy of neutrality for EXACTLY as long as Switzerland. Sweden has always been much more active in non-combat support missions, including those conducted by the U.N. The Swiss sit on their asses and count their money from their "see no evil/hear no evil/speak no evil" banking transactions with the world's scoundrels.
28. blah - January 27, 2009 5:16 PM
As a Swede it's incredibly entertaining to read most of the idiotic and ignorant comments that are being posted. Go on, keep entertaining me by making your ignorance even more apparent.
Everyone with the slightest bit of education knows about Sweden's and Switzerland's outspoken neutrality throughout the wars of the last 100 years or so.
Everyone also knows that the general education level in the US is laughable at best. The average American (this has been statistically proven several times over) can't locate America on a world map. Go you!
29. Still dumb as a post - January 27, 2009 5:17 PM
I'm sorry, but the fact that she thinks everyone thinks Switzerland being neutral during WWII is the SOLE REASON for its famed neutrality just magnifies her stupidity. Switzerland has been neutral in every international conflict since World War I (you know, Jess, PRECEDED World War II). Switzerland has not been at war since 1815. Sweden or any other nation? Not so much. Switzerland's neutrality is most influenced by its rich banking industry which famously numbers its accounts and allows foreign nationals to use them. Being a banker to so many rich individuals pretty much requires Switzerland to not take sides in wars. Sorry, Jess, you're definitely but most assuredly dumb as a post.
30. AlQaeda#1 - January 27, 2009 5:17 PM
She thinks the Obamanation makes the country "salient." Is that like sucking black cock?
She has an inkling about Sweden because she has an inkling of Swedish in her.
Big deal.
She looks like a cute soccer mom here but so what.
If Obama had his way he'd take her mulato baby, export it and have it killed with the money he just stole from the US taxpayers Friday. $400 million dollars exported to kill minority babies outside the country.
Those fuckers at Planned Parenthood are really trying to live up their racist founder Margaret Sanger's creed. Because killing those black babies here just won't do.
Okay now fuck off Jessica.
31. Moses - January 27, 2009 5:20 PM
#26 - I was referring to the comment "Because Sweden played both sides of WWII does not make them the "neutral" country. The neutral country was, is and forever will be known as Switzerland." Sorry. Next time I'll try to use one-syllable words, just for you.
32. Still not so dumb as a post - January 27, 2009 5:23 PM
"Switzerland has not been at war since 1815. Sweden or any other nation? Not so much. "
Name one war that Sweden has participated in since 1815.
33. bah - January 27, 2009 5:24 PM
The issue is not whether Sweden was a neutral country, it's which a matter of which country is famous and carries the knock for being neutral as a matter of policy. That country is Switzerland. That Sweden was neutral changes not the point: Switzerland carries the connotation of neutrality... Sweden carries the connotation of being the only country to supposedly implement socialism successfully.

35. Dakota - January 27, 2009 5:27 PM
She clearly meant to say Switzerland. That's the phrase. But if by neutral she meant letting Nazi soldiers use the nation's rail system & coal resources so they could mount a savage attack on their neighbour, than yes Sweden would have been the right choice.
36. Dirk - January 27, 2009 5:27 PM
right, Obama as president is the most "salient" part of America's history.
Forget the abolition of slavery, or the the advancements women made to maintain jobs outside of the house, to vote.
Forget the day Native Americans sat together with Pilgrims in a tradition we repeat every year in their memory.
Forget the day when the Jewish, Irish, and Italian immigrants were finally allowed to take any job, live anywhere they wanted, no longer considered considered inferior Americans.
Forget the day public education became available for all classes, all people, and people of all colors sat together in the same room to learn the same materials.
Forget the first automobile or the first time a human being took flight, right here on US Soil.
Forget our success in two World Wars.
Forget that it was America who first made it to the moon, that it is the American flag that first waved in outer space as American men spoke the first words outside the earth.
Forget all that Jessica. What matters is that you consider things like Wikipedia valid sources for truth and think that a man, who is of mixed background but calles himself a black man, he who idolizes his deadbeat father and dismisses his white family as "typical" despite being raised by them, having his expensive education paid by them, our country's most "salient" achievement. Really? Please stick to reading from the script because sadly, when you voice what you really think, it comes out worse than all the rubbish movies you star in.
37. p0nk - January 27, 2009 5:28 PM
@28 "The average American (this has been statistically proven several times over) can't locate America on a world map."
If you believe this, you're an idiot. I know a few Americans and none of them over 10 years old have a problem identifying America on a world map.
Now a country as irrelevant as Sweden, yes, i can believe there are many who would not be able to identify it.

Gawd, even my son Trig knows that Americans (even the good one in the pro-American parts of the country) aren't so hot at geography, dontcha know. Why, even while we were killin' those bad Eye-rackies, 60% of our high school and college students couldn't identify that country on a map. You betcha. 50. lisa - January 27, 2009 6:04 PM
I'm Swedish (my mother) AND Swiss (my father) and I know for sure that Sweden (and Switzerland) were BOTH neutral during WW2.
Of course some people took advantage of the war, but Sweden - as a NATION - was neutral, as well as Switzerland.
Sweden has not been involved in a war since 1814, in the Campaign against Norway. (Shame on us for that by the way. Love you, dear neighbours!)
If you want proof and facts about Sweden and WW2, google "EN SVENSK TIGER", and try to translate the articles you find with Babelfish or something.
Peace.

Sweden was most definitely a neutral WW1 AND WW2 country. TMZ really needs to do more research if they have to let Alba school them. But really, wikipedia...what's that now like the average dumb person's version of the History Channel or common sense. *sigh
52. Sarah Palin - January 27, 2009 6:10 PM
#49 - The statistics were derived from a random sample of high school and college students spanning the ages of 18-24 (so, not including younger high school students who somehow might not be expected to know geography). Sorry for the imprecision that completely threw you off. (I'm an exemplar of the intellectual level of current U.S. leaders and Trig is an example of the leaders of the future. I know because Fox News said it.)

54. Kerri - January 27, 2009 6:15 PM
If you want to get technical, she's still kind of wrong- though Sweden has an official policy of neutrality since like 1812, as far as I am aware Switzerland is the only country to be recognized by an international body (Congress of Vienna, 1815) to be neutral- hence the 'pop knowledge' of the country as neutral. Both countries were officially neutral in WWII and did not contribute militarily, both countries unofficially violated that neutrality through financial contributions.
55. Ye Proud Americans...more like, Americants - January 27, 2009 6:16 PM
The 2006 National Geographic survey wasn't even as bad as the 1988 one. Before you start trying to drown it out by changing "USA! USA! USA!" see if you can spot the on-topic part of the quote (from 1988):
"Young Americans 18 to 24 years old scored lower than their counterparts in a nine-country survey of geographic literacy, the National Geographic Society said today.
American adults ranked 6th in the study, ''Geography: An International Gallup Survey,'' conducted for the society by the Gallup Organization. The survey sought to determine how many people could find 13 selected countries, Central America and two bodies of water, the Pacific Ocean and the Persian Gulf, on an unmarked world map.
''Have you heard of the lost generation?'' Gilbert M. Grosvenor, president of the National Geographic Society,'' asked at a National Press Club luncheon. ''We have found them. They are lost. They haven't the faintest idea where they are.''
The survey, commissioned by the geographic society, tested 10,820 adults in Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and West Germany How Countries Scored Of a possible score of 16 points, American adults averaged 8.6, about on a par with British adults, who scored an average of 8.5 points, the findings showed. Canadian adults scored 9.2. Americans in the 18-to-24-year group averaged 6.9 points, the lowest score of all youths tested and of all other age groups in the United States.
Swedes tested the best, scoring 11.6 points, and Germans averaged second best, scoring 11.2 points. Only adults in Italy and Mexico scored lower than those in the United States."
56. Vince Lombardi - January 27, 2009 6:20 PM
Of course Sweden and Switzerland have been neutral for nearly two centuries. After the bronze age, both countries learned it was nearly impossible to stop another army with snowballs, chocolate, or herring.
57. p0nk - January 27, 2009 6:33 PM
@52 i read the findings you are quoting. while the sample includes college students, it is not limited to high school and college students, the percentages you quote are for all 18-24 yr olds. Maybe you should spend more time with reading comprehension.
USA has it's share of problems. Our education system is not perfect. But here are a couple things to consider -
National Geographic is a business with an intent of making money. It is in it's own best interest to portray American youth as uneducated. USA doesn't force it's youth to learn facts, those that choose to remain ignorant are allowed to.
There is probably a good reason why the brightest students from all over the world come to the USA to finish their education.
There is probably a good reason why the USA is the world's leading exporter.
All of you asshats who choose to listen to the naysayers about the US need to take the blinders off.

You just know the twit said Sweden by mistake, and then when everyone made fun of her she ran to Wikipedia to see why. It's dumb luck that she happened to pick another neutral country. Whenever someone is sitting on the fence or being indecisive, they get called Switzerland not Sweden. Just like when someone is being a pussy, they get called France. If she hadn't fucked up and had knowingly said something intelligent, she wouldn't feel the need to prove herself and could just laugh at the idiots in the media.
62. justifiable - January 27, 2009 6:43 PM
#6 No, you apologist for Bill O'Reilly, she meant to say "Sweden" in the first place, and your scenario of her praying to God to save her ass here by mulling though the Wiki makes no sense- she obviously cited the link because they're so conceited they wouldn't bother to look it up themselves - they sure didn't take her at her word, so yeah, she proved it. Given the number of posters here who still can't accept anything other than the one fact they learned about Switzerland in World Cultures class, I can't blame her. The sort of wild stab at history you're envisioning only works if it's a multiple choice question - she knows more than TMZ, Bill - and you - so suck it up.
#15 Guess what? You're wrong - that's just what Sweden, Switzerland, The Vatican, Portugal and Turkey, all neutral, did during the war. That's the techical defintion of neutrality - you're hostile to no side, you trade with all, but you don't get actively involved. It's in everyone's best interests to leave you whole and functioning as a broker for all sides. Sweden has a long history of avoiding European conflicts since Bernadotte and the Napoleonic wars (that's 1812) - and in Switzerland's case, their neutrality is really geographically and financially ensured - the Alps are a natural barrier in helping to protect everyone's banking assets.
#22 Nobody keeps insisting that common usage is the only usage possible unless you're a brainless git and can't take on learning one new thing.

I've kind of been using the FLACC scale: if a guy only grimaces slightly when seeing Bobby Trendy, he is probably pretty gay. If he moans when seeing Bobby Trendy, he has slept with him. If his BP rises sharply, he is a homophobe.
Again, I was not aware that there was an official scale so that one could ask "how gay are you?" and actually get a measureable answer.

People really love to assume that pretty girls or attractive men aren't intelligent, because why should anyone be so lucky? Sadly for the dumb fatties of the world, like O'Reilly, there are a lot of very hot and very intelligent people whose entire existence proves that lardy dumbasses like O'Reilly really are a waste of skin.

Bill O'Reilly is a fart in a mitten, along with Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. Neither of them couldn't say anything sincere if their life depended on it. The so-called "conservatives" on YouTube taking Bill O'Reilly's side are total hypocrites. They have managed to say absolutely nothing original in their own right.
Jessica Alba is stupid, not for juxtaposing Sweden and Switzerland, but rather because she mentioned Sweden because she is a misguided socialist idiot. In Sweden she would be arrested for trying to sell pictures of her daughter.

No, you sure don't need to know history -that's especially true if you want to make an ass out of yourself on a daily basis. And you, TMZ and O'Reilly are doing a fine job, keep up that good work - I love to see evidence of my tax dollars being flushed down the crapper displayed by idiots like you. The fact that people are freaking that any country outside of Switzerland is associated with neutrality is fucking sad. Alba's good-looking and when she shows she really has a brain (wow, who knew?) and refers to something that Bill "I can't tell a loofah from a falafel" O'Reilly doesn't know, she's a bitch and a cunt and a twat and should just STFU? #94 Sorry, but "neutral like Switzerland" isn't a "saying" - except in your tiny mind. It might be in Bill O'Reilly's, too, who the hell knows what goes on in his. That's like saying you can only refer to traitors as "Benedict Arnolds" and never as "Quislings". Oh, bad me, there I go again, going outside of your narrow-minded comfort zone!!
You can refer to Switzerland when discussing neutrality, therefore ensuring even the most uninformed "get" you, but there's nothing that says you can't refer to another country with an equally long history of same. And yeah, because she used the reference accurately uh, it sort of DOES mean she knows that part of its history. My kitchen sponge was able to reason that one out, but since you couldn't, thank you for demonstrably making an ass of yourself and proving my point.
Of course, this reference will be confusing to people like you who only know one thing about the subject and get upset when they hear something unfamiliar. That's what people who have an IQ outside of room temperature range do sometimes, they don't just use the same old parlance or hackneyed references everyone else does.
Don't worry, though, you will never ever have this problem.

Now i can sort of understand that not everyone would be able to locate holland on the map since it's a relatively small country, so i tried to explain the location in relation to larger and more well known countries such as England, France, and Germany. As it turns out they had no idea where any of those countries were either, and after I drew a map of western europe for them they even asked me why its called western europe if it's to the east from the states.

126. jrsimon - January 28, 2009 10:37 AM
I think Jessica Alba's missing the point. It's a common practice to reference Switzerland, not Sweden, when discussing remaining neutral in a situation. This is likely because neutral Switzerland borders Germany, France, and Italy and was right in the middle of the war while Sweden is way the hell up in the icy Baltic Sea and faced little chance of invasion. Sweden's neutrality during WWII is irrelevant; it doesn't make "Be Sweden" any less ditzy of a comment.

128. Babalu - January 28, 2009 11:40 AM
She missed the entire point of the criticism. The point isn't that Sweden was or was not neutral. The point is she mangled a common colloquialism.
"neutral like Switzerland" is a commonly used analogy.
Noboday says "neutral like Sweden."
The point being made about her is that she screwed up a common saying.

Of course, you'd deny it. After all, Hitler was supposed to be such a terrible person, for no reason except that the Zionists said so, and the Zionists know better than anybody else. Right ? Oh yeah, and in Sweden they tattle-tell when someone doesn't pay the "TV tax." The American analog to TV tax is probably the 80% or so of households who now subscribe to satellite or cable.

The extreme of capitalism is *gasp* capitalism ! No state is purely "laissez-faire" capitalist, because of government intervention. The socialists would have you believe otherwise, which would be sorta like believing a lie. That fascism and communism are diametrically opposed is another socialist lie. #130- So all of us "Americunts" are clueless gits? You know, problem number 1 in America right now is not so much economics or Guantanamo bay but that our idiots are WAY more vocal than our smart folks. We're not a nation of backward yokels who don't know anything about history, but the ones who think they know are really loud. Here's a couple of things:
1) Sweden wasn't neutral in WWII. There's a subtle but important difference between neutrality and non-agression. And if you look at the strategic situation through the scope of Scandinavian economics and politics at the time, Sweden didn't have much in the way of a choice to sign the Molotov-Ribbenhof pact. Occupied/hostile countries almost completely surrounded them, heavy anti-shipping patrols blocked the only sea lane out of the Baltic, there was nothing left to do but let the Germans through. Allowing German troops and supplies to travel through the country (grudgingly, if I'm not mistaken) was kinda countered by sheltering Norwegian fugitives (not the least of which was the now-famous rebel operative Max Manus) in my humble opinion. These are not exactly "neutral" behaviors.
2) Socialism is not going to save America. The only way that Socialism can be implemented in America would be to restrict the enormous amount of economic freedom that American enjoy. Which, you know if you've ever tried to tell a greedy person that they have to give you money, won't go over very well. It may work for your country (I assume you are Swedish), but not for ours.
3) Socialism is not the same thing as Communism, but most scholars of Marx agree (and I agree with them) that Socialism is a transitional phase on the road to Communism.
4) To the relevant issue, I am giving Alba the benefit of the doubt by assuming she meant Switzerland. In which case, she misspoke. If she really meant Sweden, she's not informed.
5) I don't know much about this "Swedish Socialism" deal, but I hope to be able to speak a little more authoritively in a couple months, as I'll be going myself a bit before tourist season kicks off so I can get a better understanding of things. I hope. I say this because I think you should venture over this way and get a better feel for our people. We're not really as dumb as some of the internet assholes make us look.

I've never heard of this shit before. She probably made that Wiki page herself ... Sweden didn't have enough of an army to do anything ... but their government certainly had an opinion ... they were not neutral ... she's dumb ... and her kid has a huge head.
P.S. ... I love you Bill O'Reilly ... and the superficial writer ... can I love both? I can, and I do!

138, are you from Sweden? If so, perhaps you should get involved with the politics - and history - of your country. Sweden is NOT neutral now. 2nd, Sweden has a history of being quite bad ass, before they fell from the ranks of military power. Today, Sweden is a pretty lame country, but it's cool, they still have hot blond chicks.

FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES
In the Oval Office in December 2002, the president met with a few ranking senators and members of the House, both Republicans and Democrats. In those days, there were high hopes that the United States-sponsored ''road map'' for the Israelis and Palestinians would be a pathway to peace, and the discussion that wintry day was, in part, about countries providing peacekeeping forces in the region. The problem, everyone agreed, was that a number of European countries, like France and Germany, had armies that were not trusted by either the Israelis or Palestinians. One congressman -- the Hungarian-born Tom Lantos, a Democrat from California and the only Holocaust survivor in Congress -- mentioned that the Scandinavian countries were viewed more positively. Lantos went on to describe for the president how the Swedish Army might be an ideal candidate to anchor a small peacekeeping force on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Sweden has a well-trained force of about 25,000. The president looked at him appraisingly, several people in the room recall.
''I don't know why you're talking about Sweden,'' Bush said. ''They're the neutral one. They don't have an army.''
Lantos paused, a little shocked, and offered a gentlemanly reply: ''Mr. President, you may have thought that I said Switzerland. They're the ones that are historically neutral, without an army.'' Then Lantos mentioned, in a gracious aside, that the Swiss do have a tough national guard to protect the country in the event of invasion.
Bush held to his view. ''No, no, it's Sweden that has no army.''
The room went silent, until someone changed the subject.
A few weeks later, members of Congress and their spouses gathered with administration officials and other dignitaries for the White House Christmas party. The president saw Lantos and grabbed him by the shoulder. ''You were right,'' he said, with bonhomie. ''Sweden does have an army.''

@ 143
holland = the netherlands u stupid cunt. and seeing as I currently live in holland, and have lived in many other western european countries, the middle east, and the states yea ide say im pretty well informed when it comes to geography. U are right about one thing though, many americans seem to believe that amsterdam is a country...
162. Me - January 29, 2009 4:27 AM
@155 America has always had a silent majority. The loud ones are usually hard extremists who have something to prove, while most Americans just want to put food on the table
2. Fascism has existed America since at least the passing of the Federal Reserve Act
3. Marxism is but one of many varieties of socialism, including the various types of communism. It has support in the US due to the culture shift towards things like New Age, eco-feminism, the 1960's "freedom" movement and "poverty chic"
4. No, she meant Sweden, and I'm pretty sure she knew fully well that the phrase was "be neutral, be Switzerland." She's not exactly a military historian but she's no Kelly Bundy either. Reminds me, in _Be Kind Rewind_ they used the word "Swede" as a verb.
@161 Holland covers most, but not all of The Netherlands
163. nene - January 29, 2009 5:19 AM
come on! it's obvious she typed the words 'sweden' and 'neutral' on google and crossed her fingers for a positive result. sweden and switzerland were not the only neutral countries during the second ww. portugal was neutral and so were the u.s., until the japanese bombed pearl harbor. i'm not saying she's dumb. she's just trying too hard. face it, you meant switzerland, dear, you made a mistake. now shut up!
164. eurotrash - January 29, 2009 7:21 AM
@ 162
if u wanna get really specific yes Holland is not the official name, the netherlands is. In dutch we say both 'holland' and 'nederland', and in the original comment I chose to use Holland instead of the netherlands for a reason; namely that most americans ( at least the ones ive met) are more familiar with the term Holland than the netherlands. So, once again, when people say either holland or the netherlands, they mean the same country.
165. Me - January 29, 2009 8:45 AM
Really? Then why is there a North and South Holland ?
166. Sid James - January 29, 2009 10:52 AM

Man, that's sad. Didn't anyone tell her that Wikipedia.com ISN'T a credible website?
Its just a whole bunch of people who think they know a lot about one thing. Man I should go on Wikipedia.com and look for Jessica Alba and edit her biography. Under "Personal Life" I'm going to write "Not too smart."

@ 165 (you do realise you're trying to argue with a dutch person right??)
'really? then why is there a north and south holland?'
those are just names of provinces ok.
NO ONE here in the netherlands ever thinks of or refers to those two provinces collectively as 'holland' (not since the early 1800's at least), to the dutch they are now just the names of certain parts of the country.
In any case, that has absolutely nothing to do with what i said before. ill say it one last time; in dutch and in other languages the (entire!) country in question is commonly referred to as both the netherlands and holland. Us dutch folk just think of it as an official name and an unofficial name.
Despite what wikipedia might have to say about it, it is not an issue. In fact, I am amazed that they make it sound like such a big deal, its kinda like arguing over saying 'USA' or 'america' ; no one gives a fuck, and everyone knows what country you're talking about.
176. Me - January 29, 2009 7:26 PM
Do you realize that you're arguing with someone who speaks English natively? In English it's called The Netherlands, just like how Sverige in English is "Sweden" and not "Sverige." You have compared Holland/Netherlands to America/USA, which shows that your reasoning is flawed, and that it wouldn't hurt for you to visit Wikipedia every now and then yourself. By using the word "Holland" when speaking to Americans, you are being cynical and condescending, not to mention a bit hypocritical. Next time you're better off just using ebonics.
177. ert - January 29, 2009 7:50 PM

Jessica, stick to acting ( or don't ) but shut up about things you know nothing about.
180. RTARD - January 30, 2009 4:50 AM
because Holland isn't an english word now?!
181. eurotrash - January 30, 2009 5:51 AM
look em or me or whoever you are,
you don't have to take it so personally that I pointed out that you got some misleading information from wikipedia. The fact that you can actually interpret any of this as cynical or condescending is really quite sad and very uneccesary, and you certainly can't hold me personally responsible for the fact that the netherlands is often called holland in both dutch and english.
(and I won't hold it against you for assuming that I'm not a native english speaker because I have a dutch passport... it's complicated).
I can see you're not stupid, so I'm sure you understood that I used the usa/america example just to illustrate how pointless this discussion is from a dutch perspective - and that really there is no need to go into the merit of that example. (and I get what you're saying with the sweden example, but that one isn't really comparable to this situation either ;)
on that note, I declare this discussion over!
182. Zo - January 30, 2009 1:43 PM
AAAH! Jessica Alba you suck so hard!
Why does Obama being elected have anything to do with you?? How is this the most salient time in our history?? What about the Revolution of the US in the freaking first place??
We're in the worst economy since the Great Depression, or worse. Our government is huge and obtrusive and making things worse. Obama is inexperienced. How is that salient??? Ugh I hate celebrities.
183. Tamara - January 31, 2009 12:46 PM
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU ARE IDIOTS!
TMZ put on their sarcasm gloves and typed out this response to her: "She is absolutely correct. Sweden was a neutral country ... 60 years ago. We apologize for not considering the political climate of the world in 1942 when we suggested she may have meant, 'Be Switzerland' -- a country that is currently neutral."
184. Paul - February 3, 2009 3:10 PM
@162, of course. We've got more important things to do than post opinions on forums all day long (no offense, everyone)
2) Fascism is not the same thing as Socialism. Fascism was supposed to be a "Third Way" movement opposed to both Communism and Capitalism.
3)Marxism, Leninism, Maoism, Stalinism, etc are all forms of Communism, which is quite separate from Socialism. There are similarities, but they are not the same. Marx was the first person to really articulate clearly the ideals of Communism (aside from being a world-class egocentric asshole) most major Communist dictators had the Communist Manifesto on their nightstand.
4) I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt until they say/do something that is completely ridiculous. For an American actress of the 21st century to not completely understand the military/strategic complexities of a minor operation during a period that holds little bearing on her as a person is not particularly surprising. I'm just saying, if you asked her to point out Sweden on a map, I'd bet dollars over kroner that she'll put her finger down in north-central Europe. I understand it because I appreciate the complexities of the German strategy (before Hitler took over the military planning process from his generals). Such demands are not frequently made of a beautiful woman 70 years later. And Jessica Alba is nothing if not beautiful.
