Have you ever worked with the kids who are on those medications? I agree that some things are way over diagnosed. However, I have worked with a child who was so shy that she would literally shake and cry during class. She worked with a therapy dog so she would feel a little better (she was a 6th grader), and eventually got some anxiety drugs. She is doing so much better now because she has this help, but that isn't to say she isn't doing anything herself...she works hard to still keep herself under control. She told me she doesn't like taking pills because she doesn't like swallowing things that are whole, but she knows it makes her feel better and have more control over her life. So do you want to tell this 11 year old girl to just buck up and get over it? People like you need to stop talking if you have never experienced it yourself.

You could have the best life possible on paper but without these naturally occuring chemicals to assist with keeping your mood elevated, it is not hard to feel unhappiness and hopelessness.

Medications can be very helpful to someone who is in the pit of depression. I know what that feels like, I've dealt with depression since I was 11, and certain meds made it possible for me to get out of bed and feel somewhat human. But I also think they should be a short term tool, not something that you stay on for years at a time because pharmaceutical companies and doctors tell you to. I've been off meds for two years now, after being on them for twenty years, and I feel better than I can ever remember feeling, but the withdrawal period was about four months of hell that almost made me start taking my meds again, but I knew it would eventually pass. I then had to deal with emotions that had been kept nullified for years, but I found that it wasn't as hard as I thought when I decided to face them head on and get through it. Not saying everyone can or should do that, but I think some depression is caused by not facing and dealing with our feelings. Like being neglected or abused as a child, or going through a death in the family, or divorce, etc. If you bury those feelings or drink or take meds to squash those feelings, they are going to still be there waiting for you to deal with them eventually, and its better to get through it now than hold it off for years. We are REALLY LUCKY to live in a time when mental illness is treatable so that sufferers can live normal lives. There's nothing noble or praiseworthy about living in a time when you just had to buck up and drag yourself through all the days of your life, drowing in sadness. It just means you lived in a time when the medical therapies that could have changed your life hadn't been discovered yet, that's all.

This stupidity about "just get[ting] over it" is one more reason why I loathe the lie that is Scientology.

She was hospitalized for 3 months and put on Haldol (an antipsychotic) after twice attempting suicide after the birth of her 4th kid, and advised not to get pregnant again. Her husband took only half the doctor's advice - he made her take her meds, but she got pregnant soon after. Her husband 's only other concession to keeping her sane was to move them out of that fucking bus - he wanted a completely simple lifestyle, so she had to homeschool the kids and the family's lack of funds kept her in almost total isolation - so you do the math. Either way, it came out minus five kids when she had a psychotic break - her dosage was off and she wasn't being seen by doctors. Russell Yates thought she might possibly kill herself, it never occured to him that her psychosis endangered his kids as well.

Regardless of Yates' fundie group, Scientology is the one that's going around stating that psychiatry is a huge Nazi-enabling conspiracy and that anyone who speaks out against their cult is, q.e.d, under the control of psychiatrists. There have been enough people who've left the enclosure and written about it, so that if you have any intellectual curiousity at all you can do the research and make up your own mind. Some of these people have grown up in Scientology families, which de facto makes it harder to leave, and even harder to speak out, so their efforts carry a lot of weight.

To claim Scientology as "a religion...doesn't seem any more messed up than most other religions in the world" is really lazy. To encourage people to come out with really irresponsible and insulting shit like Philips and Cruise do is disgusting - and they deserve whatever response they get to such reckless idiocy.
