Mark Ruffalo's brother Scott did NOT die playing Russian Roulette. According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Coroner's, his death is being ruled a homicide. The AP reports:
Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey says an autopsy determined that someone shot 39-year-old Scott M. Ruffalo in the head. He was found with a gunshot wound early Dec. 1 and died a week later at a hospital after being released from life support.
Police do not have any suspects in custody and had not been notified of the coroner's determination by Wednesday evening, Sgt. Michael Publicker said. He said the agency had no further statements on the case.
Fantastic stuff here. Nothing like being told your brother killed himself playing Russian Roulette only to find out "Just kidding!" Someone shot him and the police stopped looking for suspects a week ago. To make things up to Mark Ruffalo, I hear the cops are going to back over his wife with a patrol car - then give him a parking ticket. Fa la la la la!

Were there witnesses with this poor guy that night? I vaguely recall seeing a report of some woman talking away and saying nothing.
Sympathy to the family. This is horrible and sadly even more so at Christmas.

LAPD is not connected with the coroner. The coroner is a branch of the LA County Sheriff.
Since LAPD treated this originally has a homicide and arrested a suspect, they can simply pick up where they left off.
I'll be curious to see what the coroner found that led to the finding. My guess? No gunshot residue on the victim's hand. Big oops on the part of the killer when you're staging a suicide.

I'm really sorry for this guy, whether his brother was murdered or was playing some dumb game, he's DEAD and wtf? My own son, when he was 11, accidently hung himself while playing in his bedroom. Was he playing a game? Was it suicide? Was it really just a tragic accident? We're never going to know until we reach the Great Beyond. My heart-felt condolences to Mark Ruffalo and family. (and yeah, I never heard of the guy before now...)

Homicide is a blanket term for all death not of natural causes.
Homicide investigators investigate all death not obviously of natural causes (such as heart attacks or strokes), in order to determine the cause of the death.
So suicide is homicide, as is death in self defence, death by criminal negligence, death by misadventure, etc.
So your headline should more correctly read: Mark Ruffalo's brother's death ruled a murder

While its sad that someone was murdered its no more sad because he was related to an actor. How many other people have been murdered since his death? Do you see their deaths getting this kind of attention? Its ridiculous.
As for the Ruffalo family... I know from personal experience that their father Frank Ruffalo is an asshole who screws people over on a regular basis. I had him as a landlord and on the day I was leaving Wisconsin, truck packed, house immaculately cleaned two children in tow he flat out refused to pay me my security deposit back. Stood there and smirked at me and said "you can always take me to small claims court". He knew that I had the truck for a limited time to get to CA and that I had nowhere to stay and that I'd have to stay in Wisconsin to file a claim against him. Total asshole to screw a single mother of two. And this was after coming by the house repeatedly that day telling me was going to give me the deposit back when it was clean.
Karma is a bitch and I'm sure he will get his but I nearly choked watching a clip of Mark Ruffalo's interview on Inside the Actor's Studio when he was going on and on about how great his father is and what a compassionate person. Bullshit!
