Comedian Wanda Sykes came out of the closet yesterday at a rally protesting Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage in California. The AP reports:
"You know, I don't really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn't feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life," Sykes told a crowd at a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.
"Everybody that knows me personally they know I'm gay. But that's the way people should be able to live their lives," she said.
Sykes, who is known for her feisty and blunt style, said the passage of California's Proposition 8 made her feel like she was "attacked."
"Now, I gotta get in their face," she said. "I'm proud to be a woman. I'm proud to be a black woman, and I'm proud to be gay."
Wanda also added "Plus, you know, it was getting all kinds of crowded in there and Tom Cruise wouldn't stop asking me if I was an alien or something. So finally I say 'Look, I am not an alien - but that Spencer Pratt kid behind you is.' Then made a bee-line for the door. Sheeit, he called me an alien! I mean, uh, boo! Prop 8: Oppression."

To think, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR BELIEFS, that Gay marriages are no legal, is absurd. I also can't believe that in many states Abortion is illegal (here is is Legal). I Love the US, I lived there for many years, but come on, get with the times already!! Also, this whole - electing a FEMALE president, is crazy - there are dozens of FEMALE prime ministers/presidents in the world, past and present - it is NOT A BIG DEAL.... @7 I don't think 51% of the vote is a "majority rules" situation or should strip those people of their rights. Everyone should have the right to be happy and live their lives without oppression. However, the guy that wants to marry the sheep, well, that's another matter entirely. Something like this should have a higher % of the voters to "win" - How about 75%?? Then you would have a clear message from the voters on an issue.

"majority rules" applies to an absolute democracy. America is a republic. Remember this? "I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands..." The federal and state governments have 3 branches, executive, judicial, and legislative. The laws and their enforcement are a product of all 3. So, for example, the California Supreme Court might overturn Prop 8. Conservatives will moan about overstepping of boundaries, but the government is designed to have this type of internal competition to make it difficult, not easy, to alter the law (or constitution). Remember "checks and balances"? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Our elementary schools really suck these days.

Like #30 says, there's no reason to treat a voter referendum as the final say. Citizens are free to petition the governor and the state legislature to find ways to circumvent it, and of course the state Supreme Court can overturn it if it finds a basis to do so. It's called America. Conservatives say they love it more than anyone else, but they always get furious when citizens exercise their rights. Conservative Christians, in particular, seem like they'd be happier in an Islamic country that simply substitutes "Jesus" for "A l l a h".

The voters chose twice to bad gay marrage. The homo's didn't like it, so they had the California court of repeals declare Prop 22 unconstitutional. So the people passed Prop 8 defining marrage as between a man and a woman. well since the gay movement sees the need to protest a sour vote by not paying taxes, I think everyone who voted for McCain should get a pass on taxes, as well. It was always my understanding that voting results were fixed until another election but seeing how the gays feel it's their right to punish people who didn't give them what they want...I'm seeing things differently in the way the general election went, too. Actually, @ 47, Prop 8 could definitely have an effect on the rest of the population. In MA, where gay marriage is legal, Catholic orphanages have closed down because they couldn't pay the legal fees to defend themselves from gay couples suing. Somehow, it's okay for people to believe homosexuality is fine, but it's NOT okay for churches to have their own set of beliefs. In theory, if Prop 8 hadn't passed, churches could lose their right to wed straight couples, because they don't support a so-called "civil right" (keep in mind that marriage has had pretty much one definition for hundreds of years--a union between a man and a woman. Keeping the traditional definition of a social more intact is NOT a violation of someone's civil rights. I don't believe that the government should withhold insurance or tax benefits from gay people, but that's not the same issue). Also, as 56 pointed out, sex-ed in public schools would almost certainly change. Oh, and churches that do significant amounts of charity work could possibly lose their tax-exempt status, because they don't support gay marriage. Just something to think about.
