Nov 9 2008Sarah Palin not falling off face of the earth, pursued by talent agencies (Damn.)
Remember this lady? Surprise! She's sticking around. Sarah Palin is being actively pursued by top talent agencies such as CAA, ICM, William Morris and Paradigm. All of them are looking to make her the "White Oprah" complete with book deal by the end of November. Here's what top professionals in the field told Page Six:
"There are several of our imprints who are eager to talk to Governor Palin," Random House spokesman Stuart Applebaum said. "She clearly has a constituency and we know books by conservatively-centered politicos usually sell very, very well."
Public-relations powerhouse Howard Rubenstein added, "She's poised to make a ton of money." But he warned, "She ought to keep an eye on what her goals are for 2012. If she plays a game and looks foolish, if she sounds like she doesn't know what she's talking about - like saying Africa is a country - she may talk herself out of a political job."
Linda Mann, president of Mann Media, which books celebrities and fashionistas for TV, noted, "Her buzz is incredible. She has car-wreck appeal. You're compelled to watch, hoping she'll say the dumbest things possible. I'd propose a show combining her love of fashion and lack of brainpower - 'Project Dumbway.' "
Personally, I don't care if they give Sarah Palin her own channel and line of collectible figurines. Just as long as she's nowhere near the nucular codes and I have to watch a press conference where "Cross my heart, I'm just your regular Joe Six-Pack who thought Italy was a moose when I fired those doggone missiles. Am I sorry? You betcha. In the meantime, if I start winking it's not because I'm being folksy, I think the CIA poisoned my latte."

4. HUH??? - November 9, 2008 3:49 PM
What makes this chick a great American? She's no more a great American that anyone else who loves this country. One thing she's not, is qualified to lead this country in any capacity whatsoever. She's really not that bright. And that's the last thing this country needs, another moron Republican leader.
And had everyone forgot she's Pentecostal?

Im not going to hate on Palin. I just wanted to mention that I think this will be a much better fit for her. She seems more like the talk show type to me.
8. Sueme's Buttplug (fell out) - November 9, 2008 4:19 PM
I will hate on you SueMe. This should have been the Vice President. White Americans would have been happy to have her lovely face to look forward to rather than Joe Biden's. Of course, this country won't be white much longer so go ahead and hoot and holler now like a monkey (well, ape).

Nobody cares. Unless it is a nip slip or upskirt nobody wants to hear anymore about this bitch.

Yeah... it's far better to have the nuclear codes in the hands of a pansy who will never use them... even if he should. Keep drinking that socialist kool-aid! I'm sure that Columbia and Harvard education does make him more qualified to convert a country to Socialism, though. Let's see if the big 'O' can successfully kill the capitalist fundamentals that made this country great... that will be an excellent way to help the economy. Wake the f*** up!
11. Richard McBeef - November 9, 2008 4:31 PM

#10 What part of the USA giving money to the rich and to corporations and evil thieving financial institutions is not socialism for the rich.
Normal decent countries do this for the poor. However this country has been ruled by an evil race for the last 8 years.
Go back to sleep inbred!
13. Shadix - November 9, 2008 4:34 PM
The "White Oprah" {laughs} Palin couldn't hope to ever achieve a mindset as objective or intelligent as Oprah if we gave her access to the fountain of youth. She's a cheerleader figurehead for the NeoCon thinktank. Let CNN have her, long as her theology's off my biology I don't care what she's up to.
P.S. You "Obama = Socialist" subscribers are so fucking cute it makes my head spin. Socialists don't think he's a socialist, McCain doesn't think he's a socialist, and yet you all talk about socialist KoolAid because we "can't spread the wealth around in a capitalist economy." I'd agree with you on a normal day in 1995, but it's 2008 and I must ask of you: "uh - WHAT fucking wealth?" Let's just back up a bit and work our way back to BEING a great country before we whine about unconventional ways to avoid falling from the top. It's a looong fucking fall and I'd rather trade our failing standards than the freedom we have left while the ship is sinking.
14. Lynn - November 9, 2008 4:43 PM

"Sarah Palin is a great American. Oh, and she's milftastic.
Now watch all the liberal hatred curse this post."
Well, I'm decidedly left of center, and while I'll probably never go so far as to VOTE for her, I'm real interested in seeing what happens with the milftastic Ms. Palin.
AT THIS POINT she's not well educated or well informed, but she's no dummy, and she'll probably learn what she has to pretty fast. She's got poise and presence, and she can connect with an audience. She was also accurate in pointing out that, of the four Prez and Veep offerings in 2008, she was the only one with experience in the executive branch. Super successful political careers have been built on much, much, MUCH less.
And besides, the skill-set of a beauty-pageant veteran is probably far better suited to the modern political arena than that of a lawyer, a business person, a soldier, or an athlete.
Like I say, If I ever get the chance to vote for her again, I still probably won't, but credit where it's due.

28. 1984 - November 9, 2008 6:31 PM
About "Nucular". Its spelled like that as a JOKE, referring to Bush's way of saying ithe word as well as from what I've heard also Sarah Palin's.

You are an ignorant dummy. I have plenty of wealth and I want to keep it. I don't want to give it to fools like you. Get a job, loser. Obama is a Socialist. He spent his years at Columbia going to Socialist meetings at Cooper Union (read his biography), he belonged to the New Party (Socialist) and he admits he wants to take money from people who earn it (me), and give it to losers who don't (you). It's amazing how much you suck.

I want to see her crying again like she did on Nov 4.
35. Balls McCoy - November 9, 2008 7:03 PM
You hate and discredit those of which you fear.
It's the liberal playbook:
The liberals have challenged the intelligence of Bush yet he's smart enough to rig the outcome of two presidential elections, mastermind the terror attacks of 9/11, hoodwink the demoncrats in the House and Senate to vote in favor of military action with "false documents" and create so-called environmental disasters across the globe. Amazing how someone so dumb can get one over on the democrats time after time.
As were the people of Florida, who in 2000, couldn't figure out how to punch holes in a ballot, or count them for that matter. And those po' black folks down in New Orleans, theys too stupid to account for themselves when theres a trouble a brewin', it ain't their fault, it's the evil republicans and FEMA well ain't it?
So surely Sarah Palin isn't intelligent, why she's just another stupid mom that doesn't matter in the eyes of the elitist liberals except of course until the next election cycle rolls around and we hear things like "women's rights and breaking the glass ceiling" oh except for you Sarah, we don't want you reminding us what a real American looks like.
But remember, American's are just dummies. You know, the ones that can't do for themselves and need the government having say in every little bit of their lives...hey you...put down that cigarette! hey you, turn off that light and save energy...hey you, better get that digital cable box converter because you can't not have cable anymore...hey you doctor, you'll be arrested if you don't abort that fetus...hey you radio exec, your station will lose it's fcc license if we don't hear a show with a liberal point of view...hey you backwoods man, who lives 10 miles from the sheriff's office, you can't have that weapon to protect yourself when in immediate harm...hey you...kindergartner, lets read a story about two mommies and no daddies....hey you white collar man...you work until you're finished with whatever you're doing but don't you think you're going to earn anymore than that 8-hour blue collar shlub....hey you mom and dad, your daughter is 13 and has the right to protect her privacy from letting you know she "got rid of the consequences", we'll make sure she gets the tax-funded condoms next time around...hey you internet genius....if you read this much and are ready to comment in counter point, fuck you. The democrats have done more to affect my life 100x more than the republicans.
I'm 35 and the government won't let me smoke a butt, eat fatty foods, buy myself a case of beer, drive my car or throw out my god damn garbage without having a fucking say in how it's done. You voted for Obama not me. And he is going fuck up this country and make us weaker than Clinton on his worst day.

IT WORKED ON SOME STUPID UNINFORMED AMERICANS THAT SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO VOTE. THAT WAS THEIR PLAN SO THEY CAN RULE THE COUNTRY. DON'T WORRY THE BLACK MESSIAH WILL CURE EVERYTHING AND BRING "CHANGE". DAM THE PEOPLE THAT VOTED FOR HIM JUST GOT DUPED! FUCKING FOOLS! OBAMA IS A TRUE MARXIST AND THANKS FOR LETTING HIM IN TO FUCK UP AMERICA! FUCKING MORONS!!!!!!!
Saul Alinsky’ son praises Obama for learning the Alinsky Marxist model well
This editorial from Boston.com is from L. David Alinsky, son of Marxist and socialist Saul Alinsky, a communty organizer. Obama has patterned himself after the Saul Alinsky model in everything he has done since arriving in South Chicago.
“ALL THE elements were present: the individual stories told by real people of their situations and hardships, the packed-to-the rafters crowd, the crowd’s chanting of key phrases and names, the action on the spot of texting and phoning to show instant support and commitment to jump into the political battle, the rallying selections of music, the setting of the agenda by the power people. The Democratic National Convention had all the elements of the perfectly organized event, Saul Alinsky style.
Barack Obama’s training in Chicago by the great community organizers is showing its effectiveness. It is an amazingly powerful format, and the method of my late father always works to get the message out and get the supporters on board. When executed meticulously and thoughtfully, it is a powerful strategy for initiating change and making it really happen. Obama learned his lesson well.
I am proud to see that my father’s model for organizing is being applied successfully beyond local community organizing to affect the Democratic campaign in 2008. It is a fine tribute to Saul Alinsky as we approach his 100th birthday.”
L. DAVID ALINSKY
In his book “The Obama Nation”, Jerome R. Corsi, Ph.D. states, “Make no mistake about it: ‘change’ was always [Saul D.] Alinsky’s code word for creating a socialist revolution, even if the methodology meant radicals would cut their hair, put on business suits, and run for political office. Alinsky taught [community] organizers [like Obama] to hide their true intentions in the words they spoke.”
In his Rules for Radicals, Alinsky outlines his strategy in organizing, writing:
“There’s another reason for working inside the system. Dostoevsky said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution. To bring on this reformation requires that the organizer work inside the system, among not only the middle class but the 40 per cent of American families - more than seventy million people - whose income range from $5,000 to $10,000 a year [in 1971]. They cannot be dismissed by labeling them blue collar or hard hat. They will not continue to be relatively passive and slightly challenging. If we fail to communicate with them, if we don’t encourage them to form alliances with us, they will move to the right. Maybe they will anyway, but let’s not let it happen by default..”
56. Truth doctor - November 9, 2008 10:29 PM
Palin in 2012, guaranteed. The only strike against her was experience and knowledge - both will be non-issues in 4 years.
As I said, guaranteed.
57. Binky - November 9, 2008 10:45 PM
I agree totally #56. As I've said before - it looks like a Palin/ Carrot-Top ticket in 2012.
GOP insiders have decided Tina Fey's Palin imitations somewhat hurt the campaign. But what comedian on their meds is going to do a Carrot-Top imitation ? They'd never work again.
As far as 'the knowledge thing'. This has been a complete nonissue in the American politic since well before Reagan.
58. Big Dick - November 9, 2008 11:01 PM

Now that the 2008 election and its historic high turnout is history, there is much greater appreciation for the privilege of voting.
But most people don't realize that out of 44 American presidents, only the last 15 were elected in a truly democratic fashion by all of our citizens -- men AND women.
Until 1920 women were denied the vote, and few people have any idea of the struggle our suffragettes had to go through to right this wrong. It's an amazing, awe-inspiring story!
Now you can subscribe FREE to my exciting historical e-mail series that reveals HOW the suffragettes won votes for women. Believe me, it wasn't easy!
"The Privilege of Voting" is drawing rave reviews from readers all over the world. Dramatic, sequential short-story episodes follow the lives of eight of the world's most famous women to tell the true stories of the courage of the suffragettes. Between 60.7 percent and 61.7 percent of the 208.3 million eligible voters cast ballots this year, compared with 60.6 percent of those eligible in 2004, according to a voting analysis by American University political scientist Curtis Gans, an authority on voter turnout.

She's ignorant and loves to hunt so what better person to lead the republicans. I mean seriously, how inbred hick do you have to be to be a racist. Like the amount of ignorance a person must have to have would be astounding. There's a lot more important things to worry about then hating other people who are different from you. If everything and everybody was the same, this world would be a pretty damn bland place. Pretty sure you racists don't eat grits everyday or whatever the hell it's called cause you would get sick of it so grow the fuck up.
Being a racist in today's world is like trying to show off your 8-track to a world that all uses ipod's and cd players. That's right, we look at you like you're a fucking retard who couldn't be more behind the times if he tried.
So if you want to still spread your hate and racism, do it with your other ignorant uneducated friends. Don't come on the internet and spread it cause no self respecting human being wants to read it.
So you fucking racists keep praying for Larry the Cable guy to be your next president and the rest of the world will pray for an educated well spoken president regardless of his skin color.

And I'd much rather Palin have the nuclear codes than Obomma. At least Palin would aim the missiles at our enemy. Obomma is gonna aim them at the US, then move to Africa and be named King of the Planet of the Apes....where he will rule over all the other monkeys!
81. Voter Fraud for Obomma - November 10, 2008 10:13 AM
White Republicans voted 89% - 11% for McCain
White Democrats voted 90% - 10% for Obomma
White Independants voted 52% - 44% for McCain
Black Democrats voted 99% for Obomma
The 1 Black Republican voted McCain but his vote was thrown out because he was black and didn't vote for Obomma

I was checking out McCain/Obama earlier in the year, and it looked like a toss up. I think McCain is fairly sensible on his own. Then his party dragged him into their nutty pseudo(anti)-Christian doomsday cult. I saw his positions had changed since I last looked, and not to my liking.
Had doubts about Obama, too, but not like this Palin lunacy.
Guess we gotta wait a couple years and see how things are going.

Sarah Rules!! She is more intelligent than her critics. Which one of you has ever been elected governor of a State? Which of you has managed 27,000 employees or administered a multi-billion dollar budget? She did this with a 80% plus approval rating. Which of you have ever taken on ivy league CEO's and beat them at business? (Oil CEO's) You belittle yourselves when you act like she is stupid. You can dislike her on principles or policies, but to say she is not intelligent is an insult to your intelligence, not hers.
I'm happy we could elect a person of middle eastern decent to the presidency. But I'm much more afraid of having a person with ties to terrorists with access to America's secrets and Nuclear Arms.

Alaska needs the oil companies because how else are they going to be able to connect with the Canadian lines? Palin basically delayed the inevitable. Women in Alaska are forced to pay for their own rape kits which cost around 1,000. What kind of Governor allows this? Palin also told Katie Courie that she believes if a female gets raped and pregnant by her father, then she should keep the baby. Palin is a dangerous self righteous heartless bitch. I am glad the people did not get fooled again. Go Obama!

Am I sorry? You betcha. In the meantime, if I start winking it's not because I'm being folksy, I think the CIA poisoned my latte."
Palin's voice is very annoying along with her self righteous attitude and her poorly educated background makes her no VP candidate. 94. Palin Loves to Spend & Spend.... - November 10, 2008 1:31 PM
The McCain-Palin campaign is over, but Wardrobe-gate lives on. More embarrassing details have emerged about Sarah Palin's infamous shopping sprees -- including even more designer duds, plus sprayed-on tans and fancy underwear.
On top of the $150,000 first outlined in Federal Election Commission filings, Palin spent "tens of thousands of dollars" on additional clothing, makeup and jewelry for herself and her family, including $40,000 in luxury goods for her husband, Todd, our colleague Michael Shear reports. The campaign was charged for silk boxer shorts, spray tanners and 13 suitcases to carry all the designer clothes, according to two GOP insiders.
"The shopping continued after the convention in Minneapolis, it continued all around the country," one source said. "She was still receiving shipments of custom-designed underpinnings up to her 'Saturday Night Live' performance" in October. Sources said expenses were put on the personal credit cards of low-level Palin staffers and discovered when they asked party officials for reimbursement.
Newsweek reports that top McCain aides were stunned by the huge tab, especially after adviser Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three outfits for the convention and three for the campaign trail, with a budget of $25,000; instead, the nominee racked up six-figure bills at high-end department stores. "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," a McCain aide sniffed to the magazine.
Palin has always contended that she didn't ask for the extravagant makeover. The campaign previously said the used clothing would be auctioned off for charity; the L.A. Times reports that a Republican National Committee lawyer is headed to Alaska to inventory and retrieve the items still in her possession.
Palin even raised eyebrows for what she didn't wear: In St. Paul during the convention, McCain senior staffers Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter arrived at her hotel room for a briefing and found her wearing nothing but a towel, with a second one wrapped around her wet hair, Newsweek reports. "I'll be just a minute," she said, ordering them to chat with the First Dude while they waited.

You need to learn how to practice logic and critical thinking and quit repeating lies.
Walt Monegan, Alaska's former Commissioner of Public Safety, alleges that Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, her husband, and officials in her administration repeatedly tried to pressure him into firing state trooper Mike Wooten, who had gone through a bitter divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. [1,2]
According to Monegan the Palins wanted Wooten investigated. Monegan assured the Palins that he would do so and "found that the allegations had already been investigated with an internal trooper investigation in 2005. All but two -- an illegal moose killing and a tasering of an 11-year-old -- were found to be unsubstantiated. Wooten was disciplined." Monegan did not fire Wooten; Governor Palin subsequently fired Monegan in mid-July, 2008. [1]
================================================
The Bridge to Nowhere was basically for 30 rich people that lived on an island and did not want to take the ferry like everyone else.
Did Palin Really Fight The “Bridge To Nowhere”?
Republicans have been heavily touting Sarah Palin's reformist credentials, with her supposed opposition to Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere" as Exhibit A. But how hard did she really fight the project? Not very, it seems. Here's what she told the Anchorage Daily News on October 22, 2006, during the race for the governor's seat (via Nexis):
5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?
Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.
So she was very much for the bridge and insisted that Alaska had to act quickly—the party of Ted Stevens and Don Young might soon lose its majority, after all. By that point, the project was endangered for reasons that had nothing to do with Palin—the bridge had become a national laughingstock, Congress had stripped away the offending earmark, shifting the money back to the state's general fund, and future federal support seemed unlikely. True, after Palin was sworn into office that fall, her first budget didn't allocate any money for the bridge. But when the Daily News asked on December 16, 2006, if she now opposed the project, Palin demurred and said she was just trying to figure out where the bridge fit on the state's list of transportation priorities, given the lack of support from Congress. Finally, on September 19, 2007, she decided to redirect funds away from the project altogether with this sorry-sounding statement:
"Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer," said Governor Palin. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island," Governor Palin added. "Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened."

By the way assholes, the Palin rape kit thing was a total misrepresentation of an old quote used by USA Today and picked up by other biased assholes at the Huffington post. In fact it had little to do with Palin at all.
Former Alaskan Gov. Tony Knowles (DEMOCRAT) was planning to sign legislation that would FORCE local police dept.'s in Alaska to pay for rape kits out of their budgets, the chief of the Wasilla Police Dept. was against taking tax-payer funds out of the budget and when possible, would instead bill the criminal through his insurance. Palin supported that idea. It would save Wasilla the tax burden. It didn't DENY any woman a rape kit. The VICTIM WOULD NEVER AND WAS NEVER CHARGED FOR A RAPE KIT.
When Knowles was stumping for Obama, he decided to use this as a attack of Palin's ethics. Saying how she fired the original chief because they disagreed on Knowles rape-kit issue. That was completely untrue. The former chief was fired because of he was not enforcing certain laws which as a public official is an obstruction of justice.
In fact, go figure, on November 4th, after it was dragged through the media at length and with such volume, that Palin was firing officials she didn't agree with, the court found that the termination of the chief was completely justified.
Give yourselves a fucking treat for learning something today. The reason I don't want you liberals in power is you have no fucking clue of what you're doing, you want to reach for a Utopian global society which is as unrealistic as the blogs and newspapers and Chomsky wannabe's ideology.

You need to take a debating course. The bottom line is Obama was guilty by association. Obama has an enormous challenge of trying to fix 8 years of the Bush Administration mess. Obama cannot fix the Bush Administration mess in one term.
There has been a sudden spate of blog items and newspaper articles, mainly in the British press, linking Barack Obama to a former member of the radical Weather Underground Organization that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, now holds the position of distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago and was never convicted of any crime.
Both Obama and Ayers were members of the board of an anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002. In addition, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama's re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate in April 2001, as reported here. They lived within a few blocks of each other in the trendy Hyde Park section of Chicago, and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles.

I do not need to swear to make a point, but you are ignorant about President Bush ban on stem cell research, so please read the following slowly and carefully.
The Senate voted on July 19 to remove restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, only for Mr Bush to veto the legislation the following day. Mr Obama, by contrast, has supported stem cell research in an effort to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Barack Obama, the US president-elect, will use executive powers to reverse his predecessor's policies on stem cell research and oil exploration in national parks, a senior aide has indicated.

You misguided ignorant ultra right winger. I do not need to use ignorant swear words like you because I actually have valid statements. Perhaps you can learn the truth today.
Before Palin came to City Hall and became Mayor, the Wasilla Police Department paid for rape kits out of a fund for miscellaneous costs, according to the police chief. That budget line was cut by more than half during Palin's tenure. Palin always looked over the budget and never raised concern over females paying for their rape kits. The Wasilla Police Department would try to get the money for the rape kits from the rape victims insurance company which most did not cover.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's hometown required women to pay for their own rape examinations while she was mayor, a practice her police chief fought to keep as late as 2000.
A former Alaskan lawmaker says it seems unlikely that Gov. Sarah Palin was unaware of Wasilla's policy.
Former state Rep. Eric Croft, a Democrat, sponsored a state law requiring cities to provide the examinations free of charge to victims. He said the only ongoing resistance he met was from Wasilla, where Palin was mayor from 1996 to 2002.
"It was one of those things everyone could agree on except Wasilla," Croft told CNN. "We couldn't convince the chief of police to stop charging them."
Alaska's Legislature in 2000 banned the practice of charging women for rape exam kits -- which experts said could cost up to $1,000.
Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, often talks about her experience running Wasilla, population approximately 7,000, and that has prompted close scrutiny of her record there. Wasilla's practice of charging victims for their rape exams while she was mayor has gotten wide circulation on the Internet and in the mainstream media. Watch CNN's Jessica Yellin check the facts in Wasilla »
Some supporters of Palin say they believe she had no knowledge of the practice. But critics call it "outrageous" and question Palin's commitment to helping women who are the victims of violence.
For years, Alaska has had the worst record of any state in rape and in murder of women by men. The rape rate in Alaska is 2.5 times the national average.
Interviews and a review of records turned up no evidence that Palin knew that rape victims were being charged in her town. But Croft, the former state representative who sponsored the law changing the practice, says it seems unlikely Palin was not aware of the issue.
"I find it hard to believe that for six months a small town, a police chief, would lead the fight against a statewide piece of legislation receiving unanimous support and the mayor not know about it," Croft said.
During the time Palin was mayor of Wasilla, her city was not the only one in Alaska charging rape victims. Experts testified before the Legislature that in a handful of small cities across Alaska, law enforcement agencies were charging victims or their insurance "more than sporadically."
One woman who wrote in support of the legislation says she was charged for her rape exam by a police department in the city of Juneau, which is hundreds of miles from Wasilla.
But Wasilla stood out. Tara Henry, a forensic nurse who has been treating rape victims across Alaska for the last 12 years, told CNN that opposition to Croft's bill from Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon was memorable.
"Several municipal law enforcement agencies in the state did have trouble budgeting and paying for the evidence collection for sexual assault victims," Henry said. "What I recall is that the chief of police in the Wasilla police department seemed to be the most vocal about how it was going to affect their budget."
Croft has a similar memory. He said victims' advocates suggested he introduce legislation as a way to shame cities into changing their practice, and Wasilla resisted.
"I remember they had continued opposition," Croft said. "It was eight years ago now, but they were sort of unrepentant that they thought the taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for that."
He does not recall discussing the issue with then-Mayor Palin.
The bill, HB270, was before the legislature for six months. In testimony, one expert called the practice of billing the victim "incomprehensible." Others compared it to "dusting for fingerprints" after a burglary, only "the victim's body is the crime scene."
During a rape exam, the victim removes her clothing and a medical professional gathers DNA evidence from her body. There is also a medical component to assess her injuries. That component has led some law enforcement agencies to balk at paying.
Henry, the forensic nurse, said charging victims "retraumatizes them."
"Asking them to pay for something law enforcement needs in order to investigate their case, it's almost like blaming them for getting sexually assaulted," she said.
The Alaska Legislature agreed. The bill passed unanimously with the support of the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the Alaska Peace Officers Association and more than two dozen co-sponsors.
After it became law, Wasilla's police chief told the local paper, The Frontiersman, that it would cost the city $5,000 to $14,000 a year -- money that he'd have to find.
"In the past, we've charged the cost of the exams to the victim's insurance company when possible," Fannon was quoted as saying. "I just don't want to see any more burden on the taxpayer."
He suggested the criminals should pay as restitution if and when they're convicted. Repeated attempts to reach Fannon for comment were unsuccessful.

Scientists explore new source of stem cells
Using the testicular cells of adult men, researchers have grown muscle, nerve and other kinds of tissue.
By Karen Kaplan
October 09, 2008
Scientists have converted cells from human testes into stem cells that grew into muscle, nerve cells and other kinds of tissue, according to a study published Wednesday in the online edition of Nature.
The stem cells offer another potential alternative to embryonic stem cells for researchers who aim to treat diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson’s by replacing damaged or malfunctioning cells with custom-grown replacements. Scientists have also derived flexible adult stem cells from skin, amniotic fluid and menstrual blood.

Just the facts man, Ayers was not charged because of legality issues, even though he admitted guilt to his charge. Once again a right winger chooses to use profanity to make an inaccurate point. Cells taken from men's testicles only benefit MEN.
Cells taken from men's testicles seem as versatile as the stem cells derived from embryos, researchers reported Wednesday in what may be yet another new approach in a burgeoning scientific field.
The new type of stem cells could be useful for growing personalized replacement tissues, according to a study in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. But because of their source, their highest promise would apply to only half the world's population: MEN.
The restrictions for embryonic stem cell research that Bush made based on his executive orders stifled the research for years in an effort to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's. You may think that embryonic research is irrelevant, but US scientists know better, but this is because of your ignorance.
There is no "abortion" required to obtain embryonic stem cells. The cells are retrieved from unused frozen embryos at fertility clinics that would otherwise be thrown away. They would never have been implanted in a woman's uterus and brought to term.
