Certain cows (primarily in Western Europe and Australia, I believe) produce a different protein than other cows, and that protein can cause autism-like symptoms in children suffering from leaky-gut syndrome.

Gluten and casein (the primary protein in dairy)-free diets are actually a legit treatment for autism. I don't think there's any proof that it eliminates it of course, but she's certainly not the only person who believes in them. Most parents of autistic children will (at the suggestion of many pediatricians) give them a try for at least a few months.They make lines of gluten and dairy-free children's snacks (cookies, meal bars, etc) and some families will make gluten-free breads and such at home for their autistic children. Just google 'casein and gluten-free diets for autism' or any combination of those words and you'll find no shortage of articles and studies backing her up on that.

Jenny McCarthy has been an absolute gift. Along with my endless hours of research, I found her book to be full of the best advice possible in healing autism. There is thousands of parents, websites, and doctors backing everything she has said publicly regarding autism, diet, and vaccines. 1 in 150 children are autistic. That number is extremely high. I'm sure all of people that thinks she's crazy will eventually have someone close to you diagnosed. You may have a different view then, about recovery. Thanks to her, and of course myself, my son no longer has an autism diagnosis.

If a diet cured her boy, it wasn't autism. It's entirely possible that he has a rare metabolic disorder that requires a special diet. That certainly does happen. What makes things difficult is that autism can be diagnosed in either a narrow sense ("Rain Man" type of thing) or a broad sense (including very mild retardation, limited problems with communication, and low sociability). So-called broad-spectrum autism is probably a bunch of different things that aren't all that similar to each other.

In terms of vaccinations, it's highly controversial in terms of a link with autism, but very clear in terms of negative effects of the campaign to "prove" vaccinations cause autism: lots and lots and lots of kids aren't getting their immunizations, and those horrible illnesses that only grandpa and grandma might remember are making come backs. Thanks for that, Jenny and friends. If you have a kid now, he or she very likely shares a classroom with at least one kid (probably several) who have no protection against deadly childhood illnesses that were conquered by vaccines, not treatments. Some kids receiving that treatment have ended up in mainstream classrooms and done pretty well, all things considered - they've got pretty noticeable emotional and social handicaps, but they can get along well enough with the other kids and keep up in class, and they don't need to be in a special needs (retard) class.

However, cutting out wheat and dairy can be a godsend for some families with autistic children - it's proven to cause positive behavioural changes. I work with autistic kids, and I've seen before-and-after cases.

Changing the child's diet DOES seem to have an effect on it. I don't know if it's food allergies or something else that triggers/makes it worse for some children. It doesn't seem to be the vaccinations because the rates haven't gone down with the change of the vaccinations. Maybe it's something like how some people get the flue shot and then get sick but it's really because they have an egg allergy (and the culture is grown in chicken eggs)?

Still, good for her for trying to help other people out experiencing the same horror she did.

Biomedical intervention... diet...aba therapy... have saved my son's life. He is on his way to recovery. I loved this site because it made me forget about my everyday life and how difficult it is for a family with a child with autism. I'm so disappointed but then again I shouldn't be surprised.

Diet can improve or lessen the severity of Autism. But it cannot cure it. Plus, the illnesses prevented by the vaccines are worse than Autism.

It was MORE than just a diet that changed her child's prognosis. If you read her book you will see that it took many years to reverse the effects of vaccines- it mostly has to do with a childs weakened immune system and it be able to process immuinizations. Now there are so many mothers that look up to Jenny because she gives them alternatives. Something you cannot get from the APA because they get paid so much $$$ from drug companies. No one wants to help these kids, they just rather debate about what doesn't cause it. In the meantime the cases are on the rise and so many moms are handed a diagnosis with ways to help their kids. Babies do not get their MMR until 13 months, which means we protect them by eliminating the diseases through vaccination. If unvaccinated older brother and sisters bring home measles, the baby could die or be harmed. This "I don't care what scientific evidence there is; I know better" attitude is ridiculous. I'll tell you what genuine evidence there IS; it's that these childhood diseases can maim and kill. There's no real evidence of autism being cured, although the children can be helped by various techniques. I'd be curious to see if the child was ever formally diagnosed. I wonder if he might have just become a bit quiet and introverted from being around the kind of person who jumps up and down on the bed and screams at the drop of a hat.

It looks like most kids are unaffected, but some kids who have pre-existing abnormalities may develop autism-like syndromes after being immunized (it's probably the mercury, which is also put into the flu vaccine as a preservative, and remember that pregnant mothers are all told to get the flu vaccine). The "pre-existing abnormalities" part is very complex - it doesn't have to be a neurological abnormality; some kids with rare disorders of cell metabolism have reacted very poorly to the MMR immunization in particular. If the abnormalities are genetically based, then autism would BOTH run in families and be partially caused by immunizations.

My little sister received her MMR vaccine and 16 hours later she was literally crying every day for 20 hours straight, screaming, and pulling her hair out. It had the same effect on her twin brother. My kid was diagnosed 6 times with autism spectrum disorder by 6, separate, respected community entities.

He's almost 7 now. We put him on the GFCF diet (no gluten (wheat, oats, barley, or rye) or dairy or dairy derivatives). Just last month, we had him evaluated for school and he did not score within the autistic range on ANY of the tests they gave him. (Over 3 days.)

I really disapprove of people telling others not to give their children vaccinations because of both religious views and fear...because not only could you be hurting your own child - but also other children that can be infected from the child that didn't get vaccinated. If the government/CDC says something, then it MUST be true. And of course, only with technology do we understand anything; nevermind the fact that only polio has been "cured" in the past 100 years or so.
And as a side note, we no longer vaccinate for small pox, yet small pox is quite well spread around the rest of the world. I don't hear people clamoring for small pox vaccinations to occure even as we have more and more people coming from overseas into the States who could be carriers of it.

People need to be so careful when making statements about 'curing' autism. Speaking from experience both personal and professional, Autism is not something that is curable. It is a developmental disorder, and it can't be fixed unfortunately. I have no doubt that certain strategies work for some, like the dairy free or gluten free diets, etc and those few may see such a dramatic result that they want to proclaim that it is a cure, but it does give false hope to so many parent's and families.

First, the type of mercury found in fish is methylmercury and the type used in vaccines is ethylmercury. First off, Palen's kid isn't autistic, he has down's syndrome because his mother refused to protect herself from having any children while going through menopause. Second, my son is autistic and didn't get any vaccines until he entered a MAINSTREAM school when he entered kindergarden 3 years AFTER his diagnosis. Third, my kid is the cooled kid around.....way cooler than "normal" brats. As a parent of an autistic child, I praise her for getting out there and spreading the word. Diet absolutely does help autism. It may not "cure" it, but it helps eliminate many of the side affects of an autistic child. We started Feingold 5 years ago. At that point, my son was silent, only showing emotion when he was scared or sad. After a month on Feingold, he was smiling and showing an interest in his surroundings. After a year, he was talking. No, he will never be "normal", but he has come so far through diet. Just educate yourselves people. Ignorance isn't bliss in this case, it's just ignorant.
