To be quite frank, schools should not be teaching sex-education. Rod A into Slot B is NOT sexual education.
Parents are to be the teachers of their children when it comes to sex, morality, values, and so on and so forth, not the schools. The school based sex-ed is pure mechanics and it does not fully encompass the whole of sexuality/sex.

Instead of people bitching about how schools should teach sex-ed, perhaps they should be bitching about parents passing the buck and assuming the state will teach their children about what they themselves are too embarassed to discuss. Bitch about the REAL issue; parents need to do their job.

And when it comes to Roe vs. Wade, it should be overturned. The Court does not make law nor should it presume to. The individual states and it's peoples should vote on the abortion issue, and once Roe vs. Wade is overturned and it is either passed as law in the House and Senate, or the individual states vote, then abortion will no longer be an issue.

GAO Says Bush Administration Violated Law on SCHIP Program

This may come as a news flash to the White House, but even the Bush administration has to obey the law. A government watchdog agency says the administration violated federal law last August when it blocked states from covering more uninsured children under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a ruling Friday that found the administration’s unilateral implementation of new rules to prevent states from expanding SCHIP to cover more of the nation’s 9 million uninsured children violated the Congressional Review Act. The act requires that significant changes to programs and policies be subject to a public comment period or congressional approval.

But the Bush administration’s changes to SCHIP came in the form of a letter Aug. 17 from the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to state officials who administer the law. The Bush directive told the states they would not be allowed to go ahead with their plans to expand health insurance coverage to more low- and moderate-income families.

Several states already had set in motion plans to cover more children, and others were considering expansion.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) requested the GAO report. Rockefeller says the administration’s move to deny states the right to provide health coverage to more children was

…a bold-faced attempt to subvert the law and prevent states from implementing their plans to provide health insurance coverage to millions of uninsured children nationwide. CMS now has a critical choice to make: Rescind the rule or continue to spend taxpayer money defending a growing list of lawsuits it is unlikely to win.

California, New York, New Jersey and several other states have filed lawsuits to overturn the directive. Although Rockefeller and Snowe urged the administration rescind the directive, the CMS says it has no plans to do so and “considers the 8/17 letter still in effect.”

The letter also came during the heat of the battle between Congress and the Bush administration over legislation to renew SCHIP and cover more children. Bush was threatening to veto the bill. But as Rockefeller points out, when it became clear the renewal and expansion would pass with overwhelming bipartisan support, the administration moved to “suppress states’ efforts to cover additional low-income children.”

After blocking the state efforts to provide more children with coverage, Bush turned his attention to Congress and twice vetoed SCHIP renewal, first in October and again in December after lawmakers modified the bill to meet some of his demands.

Following the December veto, Congress passed a temporary extension of SCHIP to continue coverage of the 6 million children currently enrolled, but leaving without health insurance the almost 4 million kids who would have been added under the bill.

#237: I'm 22 and i do have a child. I was raised with comprehensive sex ed, and never taught abstinence until i started going to church on my own as a teen (after i knew all the "other stuff"). My sisters were both taught comprehensive sex ed in liberal public schools and both had abortions. Both of them had their first children out of wed lock. I was NOT abstinent, and also had my first out of wedlock.

I also know plenty of religious young women who were taught abstinence only, never had sex before marriage and are now happily married and either have planned their born children, or are expecting their planned children.

The fact is, abstinence does work for some people, and doesn't work for others. Comprehensive sex ed is the same way.

Every one is different regarding sex... and if we're in fear of a politician forcing any one particular view down our throats at public school, then i suggest parents start taking matters into their own hands and teach their own children about sex, instead of relying on some careless school administration to do their job for them.

She is in the opinion that it is the parents job to instill morals and values into children and not some "government run" school. Well, newsflash "princess palin": YOU, who are supposedly a good mother with great morals and resources, could not even instill these values into your own children! How can you make the vast assumption that other parents in much worse situations will be able to?? You can't put every parent up to achieve this moral platform if you can't even it. This should basically be clear and convincing evidence that parents can't always control their children. Don't get this wrong and think this is criticizing the fact that your child is pregnant. It's just pointing out that children make decisions not based on ANYTHING their parents have tried to instill in them. If children have more resources (e.g., sex education that educates them about the dangers of sex and proper methods of birth control), they may be able to make smarter choices on their own. Because the fact of the matter is, children are making these choices on their own, no matter what the parents preach.

Oh, and I hate to write this....but, um, Cindy "Vicodin Daze" McCain....are you going to adopt /care/raise/educate/pay for all those newborn unwanted children from mothers who couldn't afford abortions but didn't want to run the risk of an back-ally abortion or is Sarah "Princess" Palin???
