I would venture to say that Russell Brand had absolutely NOTHING to do with the "bump" in the VMAs viewing. I think most of viewing America had no clue who he was before this. My hypothesis is that most tuned in to see if Britney Spears was going to vapor lock again. I admit I did, plus I wanted to watch Pink, who has one of the best voices in music.

And political commentary aside, Brand was not particularly funny. His delivery was forced, as if he was searching for words to fill time. When that happens, you get a repeat of David Letterman at the Oscars. Comics (Lewis Black, for example) are people who can turn a word on a dime and make you laugh in spite of yourself. Comic writers can deliver scripted stuff, but impromptu is often their downfall.

Regardless of who hosts next year, I will not watch. Clearly the entire show was a work, since she won three of the nine awards handed out for one bad album and one really bad video. MTV's execs gave her a push and legitimately talented artists got jobbed.

I say, 'Vogue...Black or White...Mo Money, Mo Problems...Criminal', it automatically calls to mind the well-made videos that go with those songs. And see how varied the genres are? You used to be able to get exposed to all different kinds of music on MTV. That helps you appreciate art. If everyone is only exposed to this boring-ass shit nowadays, they're going to turn out to be boring-ass people.
