Sep 15 2008Rick Wright of Pink Floyd passes away at 65 (1943 - 2008)

Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright died of cancer today at 65, according to Reuters:
"The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness, that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer," his spokesman said in a statement.
"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."
My condolences to Richard's family and friends. For what it's worth, "Wish You Were Here" is one of my top favorite albums of all time.
Thanks to the surprising amount of Floyd fans who wrote in. Nice to know a decent chunk of you out there listen to good music. Rest in Peace, Rick.

Oh, man... My condolences. My mom and dad loved listening to Pink Floyd and I also like to put on their albums for a retro hit.
Thanks man for taking music into the right direction and for being an idol for a whole generation.

#1, you are an idiot! You've never heard of Pink Floyd?!?! What are you 5?
They are WAY before my time, but are still one of my favorite bands! I was fortunate to see them in Foxboro, MA in 1994. Great Show.
Favorite song is "Time" . The lyrics mean more to me now that I'm grown up.

14. Ryan - September 15, 2008 3:19 PM
It was meant as a joke. The only thing 5 on me, unfortunately, is my phallus. I came here to NOT take things seriously. So he's dead, everyone dies. I am sure he lived well and had a decent life...he had the ca$h....now someone else has it....

I took a date to a Pink Floyd concert in 1987 or 8. I don't remember much about the concert (see #5) but I did wind up married to the girl many years later. I kid you not, my Dad used to play Dark Side of the Moon on an 8-track player when I was a kid. The first vinyl album I bought with my own money was The Wall (sure wish I still had that). I've spent my whole life listening to 'Floyd. This kind of makes Monday that much shittier.

Very sad news indeed. Saw Roger Waters in concert this year in Denver, and then again in London. Really held out some hope that the four of them might get together again for one last show, but I guess it just wasn't in the cards.
No band can ever compare to the magic of Pink Floyd--absolutely untouchable!
24. Randal - September 15, 2008 3:44 PM
A legend from a legendary band. You will be dearly missed and remembered for the sounds you created on Pink Floyd albums. By far, your best work was on High Hopes, possibly the top of any Pink Floyd album.
Here's to you, Rick!

Welcome to the great gig in the sky.
True story: we were all coming down from a trip, summer-time in a u-district house, nicely stoned, cranking out the Floyd. Animals, I think it was. The door was open and in walks this guy off the street. "Hey. I heard the Pink Floyd playing so I came in. *pause* You wanna hear some of my poetry?" We all looked at each other, looked back at the guy, "NO!" He left. We laughed.
Pink Floyd ain't no sissy music!!!

I'm gonna crank out some Floyd tonight in memory of Rick.

"a great gig in the sky" is pure musical genius, the chords on "us & them", by his own ammission a miles davis rip off, one of the first jazz rock crossover. he probably introced modal themes into rock, too (the alreadt mentioned "... gig in the sky" is pure dorian). "animals" and "WYWH" are terrific album too, in terms of soundscaping and texture. I really like the guy who said he was one of the few keyboardist who didn't sound cheesey in the 80s. so sad, he really introduced something new into rock.

Syd Barret sucked. Nothing they ever did with him was worth a shit and they didnt become they legendary band they were until he was out of the picture.
You seriously liked that nursery rhyme shit Syd did?...Give me a break.

In the early seventies at School here in England we never thought Pink Floyd would make it in the States but instead continue to play small venues around the country & then Dark Side exploded and a lot of that's due to Rick Wright - seems like a million years ago.He always came across as a really nice chap -RIP Rick

One of my very first concerts was Floyd in the early 80's. There was this big giant ass inflatable pig that came out and these 2 guys sitting in the row next my group freaked out. They dove under the seats and were trying to dig through the arena's concrete floor. Great concert-

Another living legend gone. Who will fill his shoes? Who these days will have a 40 year career in this age of immediacy? Britney? Karsdashian, Brooke Hogan? The music of Pink Floyd is timeless. Some kid starting high school will hear it and it will be as good and as new as the first time we all heard it.
A true loss and a true pleasure to occupy the same time as you Rick. Thanks for the tunes,

Given this Web site's propensity to publish salacious material about crack whores, half-naked (and naked) whores, and whores talking about politics, mentioning Rick Wright here seems just plain sad and wrong. The man was an incredible piano player (watch the "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Album DVD if you don't believe me), which means he had actual MUSICAL skills.
Folks the world 'round will still be listening to Pink Floyd when Britney, Lindsey, Brooke, Jessica, et al. are the subjects of trivia questions no thinking individual cares to answer.

"Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide

And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light.”

Some are born
Some men die beneath one infinite sky.
There'll be war, there'll be peace.
But everything one day will cease.
All the iron turned to rust;
All the proud men turned to dust.
And so all things, time will mend.
So this song will end.

83. Mr. Jones - September 16, 2008 7:21 AM
Roger Waters is a genius and I love his music, but the guy has earned a reputation for being a flaming butthole through the years. Anyway, from what I understand, he had the balls to fire Rick during the making of The Wall. However, he had to crawl back and "rehire" Rick, who then had the upper hand. Rick was the only member of the band who made money during that run. So he beat Roger at his own game.
RIP Rick. You left this world a better place with your music, and people will be listening to it a hundred years from now.
84. Neolycan - September 16, 2008 7:29 AM
Honestly, I love Pink Floyd as much as anyone else, but can't you people write something that isn't one of their lyrics or a song title. I mean, I understand you are all sympathetic, and probably well meaning and good intended. But someone's life is so much more than the rehashed lines of lyrics that they were directly or indirectly involved with, come on, if there is to be any shred of hope i have left for people is that we are able to think for ourselves once in a while. Mull it over in your brains for a while, think of something on your own to say; it will be far more of an impact....
The end of life is bittersweet for those in pain, for we grieve not them, they have been released; but we grieve for ourselves and out loss of them. The cancer may have conquered over your life Rick, but you are never so conquered, the music you helped create shall continue; thus you stay alive as we listen on.

How about: "take the stick out of your ass #84, we'll miss you Rick"?
People grieve the way they know how to. Perhaps these lyrics posted are just "rehashed lines" to you, but I believe the people that posted them have a deeper connection to them, as Floyd fans would.

Pink Floyd is a group that re-defined music as we know it. If you have ever been to a concert an enjoyed it as a spectacle blend of music, light, fireworks, lasers, and other special effects...you should thank all the members of Pink Floyd. David Gilmour pioneered the long, melodic solo that transports you to another place. Rick Wright and his abilit y to create swirling melodies that you could almost touch established him as perhaps the greatest pianist and arranger of his generation.
Like the departure of Syd Barrett, the loss of this musical legend is the loss of a generation of music.
"You raise blade, you make the change, you re-arrange me til I'm sane."

102. Neolycan - September 16, 2008 11:14 PM
#91 I am not doubting the deep connection people have with the lyrics, I have many of my own as Floyd was a huge influence in my taste and appreciation for good music, but if anything I think they should along with the music serve to influence people to their own means of expression.
#95 Why such a personal attack? I did not attack individuals, I just think as a whole we should write our own feelings through our words and not borrow others. They are much more than their lyrics, they deserve something more, for instance... #98's "may you play for the angels now" is much more moving in my opinion than restating a bit of lyrics.
103. ray black - September 17, 2008 12:21 AM
Why can't we play today? Why can't we stay that way? Why can't we reach the sun? The Floyd were at their best in their Barrett/art nouveau/psychedelic/UFO period. They were incomparably glamourous, beautifully dressed(of incidental importance, of course) immensely talented and original. They, along with the Kinks, were very British bright young things. Their first three albums (Piper, Saucerful and the soundtrack from "More") are glorious artifacts from a time before punks, thugs and material girls ruled the charts. Rick, along with Ray Davies, Mitch Mitchell, The Move, Creation and a few others (Tracey Nelson, anybody?) remains vastly underrated. See Emily Play a true masterpiece), Lucifer Sam, Matilda Mother, Paint Box, Julia Dream, Apples and Oranges: pure joy, golden dim Pre-Raphaelite dreamtime gifts for Christmas on Earth and Easter Everywhere. Wish you (and Syd) were here...
104. Psilas - September 17, 2008 12:32 AM
Pink Floyd are now DEAD!
Wright was an ESSENTIAL figure in the music of Floyd and transended his technical limitations, when compared to Wakeman/Emerson, by creating textures that aspired to the ethereal.
He brought the sounds of church to ones ears { Cirrus Minor, Cellestial Voices} and possesed a trademark sound that few, if any, would try and replicate.
As Gilmour said, he was a VITAL component of Pink Floyd and did infact carry the whole band for atleast 2 years after Syd's departure.
He was a vehicle for the celestial voice inside all of us and an inspiration to anyone who feels limited in themselves or their creations.
RIP Richard Wright, trancender, and teacher of many!

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go, like
waves briefly touching the shore.
Some people stay for a while, and give us a deeper
understanding of what is truly important in this life.
They touch our souls, as we gain strength from the
footprints they have left on our hearts; we are never,
ever, the same"
I know I didn't know him personally, but Pink Floyd's music does that, it makes you feel like you do. The lyrics and the instrumentation embeds into your brain and you're never the same again.
R.I.P. Richard Wright, you will be greatly missed.
Play that Great Gig In The Sky with all your heart.

Comment 46 David Gilmour
You are an ignorant worthless sack. Nursery rhymes? Syd Barret. Listen here, popinjay, you haven't the slighest clue about songwriting. The essence is in the simplicity. Simplicity is the ultimate challenge. You know why? Because simplicity is honest and ego-less.
As far as your idiotic comment about Roger and American politics. I'm a musician and political science grad. You're a reactionary embryo. Everyone in the world should opine about American politics. You know why? Because American foreign policy affects the world.
Embryo, you how I got into Floyd? Arabs bro. The same people that are being used for target practice by Americans and Israelis. This is no criticism of the American soldier. It's a criticism of Cheney, Wolffowitz, Perle and all those cowards who use American soldiers as guinea pigs for their little political experiments.
I suggest you eat a thick slice of humble pie.

I am 40 and thats considered a young Pink Floyd fan and I just want all the young people to know how good they were and are and look up David Gilmour and Roger Waters. They formed all types of different music drom the 60's until now you should see them when they were young go to you tube and put in See Emily Play, this is when they were young and very good looking, David Gilmour to me everysong he ever did was worth buying every cd he ever made and I will be getting some Dvd's for christmas, now I need to ffind a way to get Roger and David over to my house and jam! I love them all in the band, rest in peace Mr. Richard Wright. Love Paula from Cincinnati, Ohio
