Here's what the Dems say: yes, Obama has limited experience, especially regarding the military and foreign affairs, but Biden is extremely experienced and can advise him like Cheney did for Bush (well, not exactly like that, but you get the idea). And if something happens to Obama, Biden takes over and we're directly in experienced hands.

What do the Republicans say? Yes, Palin is very inexperienced, not just in terms of foreign policy but actually in terms of national experience too (Alaska's a satellite state), but don't worry, McCain is highly experienced, especially when it comes to the military. Look, it's simple. The role of the VP candidate during a presidential campaign is to do all the hardball stuff, so the top of the ticket doesn't look "unpresidential". Cheney absolutely killed Edwards at that, since he loved being Darth Vader while Edwards wanted everybody to love him (apparently with some success...). But what will Palin do? Make direct, aggressive, negative charges against Obama? (yeah, everybody loves to see a woman acting like that...) And say what, that he lacks experience? Even if she manages to say that with a straight face, somebody in the room will crack up and it'll end up on the sound bite. This choice forces McCain to make all the direct negative attacks himself, and nobody wants to vote for the angry old man.

Not true. Down Syndrome babies sort of develop in slow motion, so if you think an infant needs his or her mom for at least the first year, in the case of a Down Syndrome baby it's more like 2 years. If you don't think an infant needs his or her mom, then it's no problem. But I was under the impression that among other beliefs, conservatives think that a mother's traditional role is sacred, especially in the first years of a child's life, and it's not a role to be outsourced to daycare (or nannies). This mom will give her special needs infant ZERO time because it's 24/7 campaigning from here on in, with very little time for a "quick hop home to Alaska." If McCain wins, there's not going to be any free time for 4 more years, especially since VPs are traditionally sent as representatives to various meetings and ceremonies in foreign countries (other than Cheney, who's been much too busy running the country).

I'm Alaskan in Fairbanks and was absolutely floored by this mornings news. I'm disappointed to see that Sarah would accept a VP offer. However at the same time I'm incredibly excited for her. My disappointment is due to the fact that I didn't want to share our state leader with the rest of the nation. As an independent voter I swear no allegiance to any political party. Instead I vote for who I believe is right for the job. She ran on a platform to be transparent and not be influenced by third party. She's successfully held up to her promise and we Alaskans have been better for it. Her only blemish has been the state trooper firing fiasco, but in the greater scheme of things that's minuscule. Regardless she has maintained transparency and has allowed a full investigation to look into those allegations. Her only draw back for the nation is that no one knows her. We do, and Alaskans love her. She is a breath of fresh air that we need in our governing leaders. Gov. Palin has my full support and I wish her the best in her future political endeavors.

I like reading the political comments on this site because it helps me understand how on earth George Bush was re-elected (Fox News + talk radio). The factual errors and gaps in logic are hysterical, especially with all the over-the-top raving that sounds like it comes from the Book of Revelation. I understand now that some people have that basic orientation to life, and it's impervious to new learning. So start McCain off with about 35% of the vote, automatically, from these folks, and he only needs to convince another 16% voters and he'll win (less if Nader or anybody else get some votes). I can certainly believe that Bush's smear campaign (example: denigrating a veteran who served, vs. an incumbent who dodged) worked on 15% or so of the population. You can do that well with ad campaigns that convince people to drink a new type of diet soda, even though they all taste like crap.

Best country in the world my ass. I have been in the US a lot. I like NY and LA, but I hate Houston, Denver, Dallas, Detroit and Phoenix.

It seems there is only 2 cities in the USA where people has common sense. And it is the 2 cities in the country that have the most immigration. However, a fertilized egg, with its DNA having merged with the sperm's, starts the process which will, inevitably (barring any complications), produce a baby. Therefore termination of the fertilized egg at that point is tantamount to terminating the existence of a baby. Dance around the issue all you want, but that's the long and short of it.

Besides that, abortion of embryos (which is way past merely being a fertilized egg) also applies to terminating its further development into a baby.

Now, I believe that there are times when abortion is warranted (in the case of rape or when the mother is in danger of dying and perhaps a few more exceptions) and should be an available option... but I believe that many people use abortion far more often as a means of convenience... of avoiding the consequences of their consensual actions. That is where many pro-life believe that abortion should not be permitted.

As for radical pro-lifers who do commit acts of violence against abortion centers... I think that you'll find that the vast majority of other pro-lifers would agree that doing such things is wrong.

In this case, I will agree to disagree with you regarding Obama's campaign running a "clean" campaign whereas McCain's campaign simply relying on arguments that are purely lies. I think there is some truth-bending on both sides... just like Apple bends the truth in their marketing campaign when they claim to have made the "fastest computer in the world" or the "world's smallest laptop" (when that's not technically true).

Obama and McCain's political campaigns are, first and foremost, marketing machines... which serve to promote their candidate for presidential viability and disparage the other in an attempt to persuade people and shape their opinions. It's important to see these candidates for what they stand for... and it's important to see their *campaigns* for what they really are and not believe that either one of them are running purely on clean, transparent facts.

I like Obama... I think he's a likable guy and I think it's fantastic that he will go down in history as the first black presidential nominee. It shows just how far we've come as a nation over the last 50 years. If I don't vote him for President, it's not because he's a black man, or because "he's a Muslim" (which he's not), or because he's too young. It will be for reasons (that I believe) of substance... such as disagreeing with him about his stances on issues and policies.

The problem with your logic Dean is that you arbitrarily assign a starting point for human life. Just because an egg is firtilized does not mean that it will become a human. For all you know, the baby might eventually be born with no head. Here are the hard facts: When given the proper conditions, a fertilized egg and an unfertilized egg can both develop into a human. For the nonfertilized egg, the conditions require meiosis with DNA from sperm. Once this happens, the fertilized egg still requires months and months of proper gestation conditions (hormones, nutrients, oxygen, temperature... etc). If any of these conditions is not met, the fertilized egg will remain a clump of cells and will never become a human. A week after fertilization, I could introduce a virus containing a plasmid with additional DNA from any other animal and totally screw up any chances of the embryo from becoming a full human.

Your assignment of fertilization as the start of human life is not based on fact, it's based on a belief. Pro-choice people respect your belief, you don't have to get an abortion if you don't want one. But you damn pro-lifers want to push your beliefs on to other people. What is so wrong with allowing women the chance to make their own decisions about their own bodies? Some people may actually want to read a book and make an educated decision, as a opposed to following some belief system with no basis in fact.

We are in agreement that it takes months and months of proper gestation conditions in order for the fertilized egg to develop properly into a human baby. But very often, abortion is used as a means to terminate an unplanned pregnancy... because the female, for one reason or another, does not want to carry the baby to term.

People don't get an abortion to terminate a clump of cells, they get an abortion to terminate the chance of having a baby.

So, in essence, when a woman gets an abortion, she is guaranteeing the death (termination, murder, whatever you want to call it) of what will very likely become a human baby. So like I said before, you dance around this issue all you want, trying to phrase things neutrally and in a manner that lessens the reality of what's being done, but that's the long and short of it.

Here's why abortion will never be illegal again: if the argument is that a fetus is a fully privileged person from the moment of conception, then abortion is (premeditated) first-degree murder, punishable by life in prison - or the death penalty if it's not the first abortion. That holds for the doctor as well as the expectant mom, and anybody else involved (even somebody who drove her to the doc) is an accomplice to first-degree murder. There's absolutely no way this country will impose first-degree murder sanctions for something that for many decades was a legal medical procedure, and something that a significant minority (at least) of the population strongly believes is not a crime at all. A society can only impose these sanctions - the most severe of all, life in prison or execution - when virtually all citizens agree on the severity of the crime. And there's no logical assignment of the "crime" to any category other than premeditated murder, given the personhood of the fetus and the obvious planning involved. What will happen instead is a continuation of what's already happening - ever-stronger limitations on abortion, in conjunction of the terrorism of the pro-lifers (shooting doctors, etc.), until abortion is available only in some areas of the country and only in early stages of pregnancy. The days of extreme pro-abortion views are over, due to ultrasound technology (nobody these days thinks a fetus isn't a human being), but there are limits to the tolerance for the anti-abortion terrorists. It's a dead issue (no pun intended) that can't be redirected, no matter what extremists on either side think.

As you can see on this thread, there are plenty of politically polarized folks who have made their minds up already, which is fine - how could anybody say Obama and McCain are "basically the same person" like fake-tough-cynical apolitical folks love to say during elections? I don't know how anybody could be "undecided" at this point. But....there are plenty of those folks, somehow, and I think it's already clear what effect this VP choice will have: guys who like McCain more than Obama will now vote with an erection, and women who might have protested Hillary's loss by voting for McCain are really really really insulted and pissed off by this choice. So, McCain probably ensured that more of the conservative base will actually turn out and vote, but this move will get him nothing from independents and PUMAs, which was his intention. Plus his age and health history are front and center now, and "experience" is off the table. Way to shoot yourself in the foot, John.

@ 407, honestly, I think that Palin is too new and relatively unknown for independents and undecided voters to form a lasting opinion about her. Republicans are, for the most part, thrilled with her choice (particularly social conservatives) and Democrats are well, definitely voting for Obama/Biden.

I think Palin has made both good and negative impressions so far (depending on who you ask), but I don't think these impressions are necessarily lasting... the next couple months of campaigning (how well she handles the media, how she comes off with her personality, what her positions are, how well she handles her debate with Biden, etc.) will serve to shape these people's opinions.

McCain's choice of Sarah Palin for VP is a gamble, with the potential to either pay off or flop spectacularly. Only time will tell which one it is...

I am offended that the Republicans and John McCain underestimate my intelligence as a woman. Sarah Palin is a cheap attempt to appeal to female voters.

I was really hoping that McCain picks Romney, instead he chose Sarah Palin. I was hoping to see a match between the Dem and Rep. SP alone has weakened the Rep position and acted as further proof that Republicans underestimate the intelligence of the American people.

I can imagine the long, drone out meetings that led up to the current choice. The discussions were surely heated. People had different favorites and each was justified in their own right. The fact that Hillary C was popular amongst women and blue collar workers came up quite a few times. Maybe more than a few times… That is why Sarah Palin seemed like such an obvious choice to the Rep party. She’s a woman and she’s from a blue collar town… (that happens to have oil that we desperately want to drill for).

Well THIS woman is not having any of it. Just because I share similar chromosomes with Sarah does not mean that we share the same values.

Rhode Island, the smallest state, has almost double the population of Alaska. And yes, she did beat a incumbent governor to win the election. So what. The people were sick of him. To me that just tells me that the old governor wasn't pulling his weight and the people were ready for a change. It doesn't tell me jack about her.

3) McCain is old. He is 72 years old and has battled cancer 4 times? There is a very good chance that if he is elected, that the VP will have to step in at some point during the next four years. I don't feel that she has the experience to lead the country. People may say that about Obama and while you might be right, the fact is that Obama was voted in by the PEOPLE of this country to respresent his party. I'm female, an independant ,and Pro-Choice and an attorney (yes even we like the superficial, hey we're attorneys we are superficial lol) but I'm kinda tired of the abortion thing being thrown around without a lot of understanding. Listen folks, the main thing that will happen with abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned is that it will be up to the states to decide if they want to keep abortion laws or not. So some states won't have it, some states will, and some states will have it with stricter laws in place. It is possible that a motion could be taken up on a national level to outlaw abortion but in order for that to pass you'd need a majority vote in the senate.

Now think about your own state's senators. Do you really think they'd want to touch such a hot-topic issue as abortion? Partial birth abortion was an easy one for the then republican majority - if you read about the actual procedure it is a little scary (the most liberal of you can't deny that and I say that having been appalled at the referendum until I actually asked a doctor what the procedure entails) and they knew a lot of people would get the details and kind of slink off in the corner after.

But avoiding those kinds of issues that are dealt with in 1st semester abortions is probably why most (not all) of them are in the senate instead of running for governor or president. And there are a lot of moderate conservatives who would vote against such a referendum if it did come to that. And even if it did plenty of people in this country would flip out and vote in a more liberal senate that would turn it back to the states, if not bring up another national referendum supporting full abortion rights. Yes it would be an ebb and flow perhaps and the fight will never end but the likelihood of a national referendum passing would be small. There's already a conservative majority on the Supreme Court so that damage is done but there's still a strong democratic force in the senate. And there are more republican seats than dem up for re-election this year in the senate which could very well be taken over by democrats.

So before we all flip our lid on that one issue, I'd like women and men to be rational about it understand the consequences and then decide where it falls on the priority list in your voting. It maybe that you find you don't feel as strongly as you thought or maybe there are other things more pressing in your view at this juncture in history or it still may be at the top and both of those reactions are perfectly fine and reasonable as long as you know why you're thinking that way. Just understand the issue fully. Just a thought.

Sometimes we just need a little boost, and none of us can help what environment we're born into. It's what we choose to do with our futures that counts. So don't be so angry sweetie, because many students out there today getting government assistance for school are just like you were trying hard to make it to the other side, and like I said once before not all are recieving free money for school.
