Aug 29 2008John McCain picks a lady to be his Vice President
It's a Friday before a holiday weekend, so what the hell? Let's talk about John McCain (Hey, he's a celebrity too!) and his sans penis vice presidential pick today: Alaskan governor Sarah Palin. Here's the word from Reuters:
Palin, 44, a self-described "hockey mom," is a conservative first-term governor of Alaska with strong anti-abortion views, a record of reform and fiscal conservatism and an outsider's perspective on Washington.
"She's exactly who I need. She's exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second," McCain told a roaring crowd of 15,000 supporters in Dayton, Ohio.
So what do you think: Awesome? Bad? We're straight fucked? She looks like Tina Fey? Cheap political ploy? Where's Alaska? I'd hit it? I'll let you guys handle the deep intellectual discourse. And people say this site isn't informative. In your face, entire mainstream media!

11. rodger - August 29, 2008 3:37 PM
Doesn't matter, I'm still voting for Obama. I did do some research on her though, she is ultra conservative, recently she has been pushing to remove government protection of polar bears because it hinders the oil companies trying to develop in alaska.
Really?
Polar bears?
What a bitch.

Deep intellectual discourse?
This one really made me laugh
and we all know a good laugh does the body good...
28. Jones - August 29, 2008 3:48 PM
I think she's great - wonderful kids names (Bristol, Piper, Track, Willow, and Trig...seriously), finished "first runner up" in a beauty pageant and won "Miss Congeniality" (so, by all means, she's qualified to be Commander in Chief), became gov of Alaska and got her ex-brother-in-law fired from the State Police (maybe she can consult on the choice for Attorney General).
Oh yeah - a few months ago, her youngest was born. Down Syndrome, needs extra care and attention. From somebody else, I suppose, not from his mom. Support family values - vote Republican!

30. BrownsSuck - August 29, 2008 3:49 PM
She would be a breast of fresh air in Washington. She has about as much experience as Obama - probably more since she ran the State of Alaska. She had to make more decisions in a week than Obama did in a year.
(I never thought I'd say this about a President/Vice President - but I would
hit that repeatedly!)

He's a dock worker for an oil company, you tool. Nice bias.
"AND she's ALREADY under investigation for corruption."
An investigation which she welcomed and encouraged before it was even a story. (Reason: She did nothing wrong, and knows it.)
Obama looks like such a self-absorbed prick at this point, I can't imagine how McCain might lose.
34. So Right - August 29, 2008 3:51 PM
McCain & Palin have my vote. They say she's a fierce competitor, a pilot, smart, holds people accountable for doing the right thing, ethical, no scandalous marks on her, and can kick Joe Biden's arse in a debate. Good for her. I think she might surprise everyone!

46. veggi - August 29, 2008 4:01 PM
I can understand why Edwards did what he did. After breast cancer, a woman isn't really a woman anymore, and it's completely unreasonable to expect a guy to pretend to be interesting in having sex with the disgusting remnants of her body. But when a woman gives birth to a special needs kid and then excitedly plans to ignore him for the first 4 or 8 years of his life, she deserves to be shot. Typical conservative Republican hypocrisy - by all means, make sure the fetus-person survives until birth, then: fuck 'em all, if you've got problems it's because God wants you to suffer.
47. Megan - August 29, 2008 4:02 PM
I seriously can't stand this misogynistic hypocrite. I already foresee Biden DESTROYING her in the debates. This also makes me this much more sad that Hillary isn't VP...because those debates would be even BETTER. If McCain miraculously wins, our country is seriously FUCKED though. I love it! I'm an independent (social liberal, fiscal conservative) and wasn't sure who to vote for if at all, but she's got my vote! I wish she were pro-choice, but other than that, I think she is a great choice for VP and will add a lot of much-needed excitement to the GOP ticket. I like her. My first choice for GOP VP would have been Michael Bloomberg who is a social liberal and really awesome. But this is next best thing. Go Sarah!
54. Em - August 29, 2008 4:06 PM
@42 - Pay attention. She's welcomed the investigation from the get-go.
When are people going to start voting non-partisan? Stop thinking that only one politcal party is good and one is evil? Both sides have incredible strengths and weaknesses. Let each voter decide for THEMSELVES who they think will be best. And, furthermore, I'd like to know how many of you are actually educating yourself in a non-biased/non-partisan manner on the FACTS before jumping on either side's bandwagon? There's still a lot to be learned/discovered before November - I hope you all spend that time doing some real research (which, unfortunately, does not include the comments section on the Superficial).
55. Fox News Watcher - August 29, 2008 4:08 PM

This is just another very OBVIOUS cheap political ploy that unfortunately many dumb people will fall for - he is just trying to steal crazy Hilary supporters. It is so pathetic.
65. Sam - August 29, 2008 4:19 PM
Fuck all the policy and ideals bullshit, that has nothing to do with how elections are won and lost.
McCain had found his groove and had deflated Obama like Hillary couldn't. Imagine how bad Obama's people felt when they realized that their convention planning had locked them into the "Temple of Obama" for his acceptance speech. Sure, he'd get a bounce from the convention, but like his lead coming out of the primaries it'd ebb away in the face of nitty-gritty campaigning.
Then, characteristically, McCain's ADD took over and he impulsively "shook things up" so he could say "look, look, I'm still a MAVERICK!!!" He's done that his entire political career and it's always undermined what he's tried to accomplish. The majority of people are terrified of 1) change; and 2) black men. McCain just had to maintain his slow steady progress and he would have won the election. Now: no fucking way, not with Danielle Quayle as his VP. Obama is much more talented as a political campaigner than Michael Dukakis, and he's going to turn this into a fatal mistake for McCain ("given Sen. McCain's age and health history, yes, I think we have to seriously consider how Ms. Palin would perform as Commander in Chief..").
66. Ed Castillo - August 29, 2008 4:19 PM

68. Jim Jones - August 29, 2008 4:21 PM
@54:
How else is a politician supposed to respond to a probe/investigation? Of course they're going to welcome it, so they can "clear their name." That is not at all indicative as to whether they're guilty or not, it's a standard PR response.
However, I do agree with your comment about people needing to educate themselves, be less partisan and vote on issues and substance, instead of basing their decision on some divisive system.
That said, this bitch is scary, even more so with McCain completely sold out to the neocons. Where or where did you go, McCain version 2000? Is there any integrity left?
69. Ummm...No - August 29, 2008 4:21 PM

72. duh der doye - August 29, 2008 4:26 PM
Nice move, Johnny boy.
The issue is experience. Here's what the Dems say: yes, Obama has limited experience, especially regarding the military and foreign affairs, but Biden is extremely experienced and can advise him like Cheney did for Bush (well, not exactly like that, but you get the idea). And if something happens to Obama, Biden takes over and we're directly in experienced hands.
What do the Republicans say? Yes, Palin is very inexperienced, not just in terms of foreign policy but actually in terms of national experience too (Alaska's a satellite state), but don't worry, McCain is highly experienced, especially when it comes to the military. And if something happens to McCain...OOPS!
Somebody forgot to think this through. I'm guessing it was that guy who's showing the early signs of dementia already.
73. Oh sweet jeebus - August 29, 2008 4:26 PM
So it's official - John McCain has thrown a Hail Mary and tapped Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. The trad med types are ga-ga about what a game-changing choice Palin is. And they're right. It is a game-changer. The Palin pick takes a race already leaning toward Obama and pushes it further into his corner.
Why? Because Sarah Palin is the most unqualified VP nominee in modern history, with the possible exception of Admiral Stockdale.
She's worse than Quayle.

She's a cross between Dan Quayle and Harriet Miers - unqualified people that were chosen by conservatives when they felt they needed to make an "unconventional" choice. Conservatives are better off when they stick with same-old same-old, all the time. This stuff is like when they show up at the beach on vacation, wearing a swimsuit, short-sleeved shirt (buttoned), black socks, and tie-shoes.

"I just read today that McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his VP running mate in this upcoming election. Originally I wanted Hillary to win but she was beaten by Obama so now I just don’t know what to do! Do I vote for a penis (hisssss) that shares the same ideals as me? Or do I vote for a vagina that is anti-gay, anti-abortion, and pro teaching Creationism in schools? Life is so confusing!!! Maybe I’ll just go bake a pie and not worry my pretty little head about any of this. Good idea. Nice try McCain. Just picking a woman as a running mate is not going to make me vote for you. The fact that you even think that it makes a difference is insulting."

86. Karen - August 29, 2008 4:44 PM
An insane choice. As the media coverage of Hillary showed, there's more bias against women in politicals than black men. Hillary had a chance because she's perceived as a total hard-ass aggressive manly woman. European leaders like Margaret Thatcher are exactly the same type. Former beauty pageant contestant? The only ones who read about Palin and vote for her will be the ones who vote Republican every election anyway. Simple truth: the PUMAs will vote for Obama (angrily), and the conservatives will NOT "stay home" and watch a young black man get elected. Palin's net addition to the ticket in terms of votes for McCain = zero.
87. Giggles - August 29, 2008 4:45 PM

89. Ack - August 29, 2008 4:47 PM
What a mistake. McCain's got two problems: he's old with a seriously nasty health history, and he's got a long history of making bad impulsive choices. His choice of Palin combines the two into a perfect package that the Dems can openly talk about all day long.
90. NY Ted - August 29, 2008 4:49 PM

as a born and bred alaska, I can guarantee you that alaskan politics are a complete joke. her running the state is about as hard as managing a burger king. corporations are rrunning the state and the governess has nothing to do with anything except looking pretty, getting her ass investigated for firing her police commissioner for not firing her ex-brother in law because he was in a custody dispute with her sister, and popping out millions of kids even after she was way too old to have one and of course it was going be down's. thats all these women in the valley do (wasilla is a shit town full of conservatives with guns who want to kill stuff and mate all day). what a freaking joke this is. mccain must be completely demented. way to look really old and confused on your birthday mccain, pick sarah random palin the ex beauty queen and mayor of a town of 8,000 people. oh my god, could the republican party look any stupier at this point. this woman is an insult to all women and yes, poochie, this woman has never been out of the united states, and knows nothing about anything except popping babies out and prancing on stage for a living. no foreign policy experience at all.
mccain has like a 500 mile long paper trail of medical records and is the oldest man ever to try and take office and THIS is THE BEST he can do?
99. Hmmm - August 29, 2008 5:04 PM
McCain didn't pick her because of her sex. He picked her because she is Governess of Assload of Oil and has made changes to get it. You people need to look past the obvious and get a clue in that swirling vortex of idiocy between your ears.
100. KimW - August 29, 2008 5:05 PM
Don't you have to be 45 to become President? When is her birthday? Oh, February 11th....so, if McCain dies before then, what happens? She can't take over, she doesn't meet the requirements. Plus, she just had a child in March who has Down Syndrome. I remember being a mom to a newborn and that alone disqualifies her from being in the capacity to serve as VP of a country. Even if they win and she's sworn in, her son won't even be a year old then. AND he's special needs. What kind of mother is she anyways?! She should be there for her son. And she's supposed to be the conservative family values person, right? Also, she's a woman that is anti-choice (she can't wait to overturn Roe Vs. Wade).....really, people, are you really that gullible?!

Aww c'mon folks it's all a fun show after all! It don't really matter who wins the agenda is on the table and it will be followed whether the president likes it or not. This woman was obviously chosen for no reason other than to balance out the Dems radicalism of offering a woman and a black. Nothing more.
What will be done will be done for Global Corporations because through the Trilateral Commision, Bilderbergers, Council of Foreign Relations the Zionist Agenda will be served. Surely you stupid motherfuckers know that.
It's now transparent with this move. McCain did not pick this bitch for any intelligent reason. She's a prop.
We are all fish caught in a net. There just aint enough Ocean to get away from it anymore whether or not you are aware of what is going on (it is probably too late how could we resist?) is immaterial.
Yeah yeah I know I am a moron and a psychopath. All wars are true and just and have nothing to do with lies, corruption, brutal invasion to steal the resources of the weak by the strong. Fly that totem (flag) high and be proud! Kill the enemy of the rich (you igonorant losers) ye mighty righteous poor (for the almighty rich)!!!!
May God (not the eye ball pyramid Horus guy please) help us all!
Vote Old Man McCain for more poverty and Neoconservative agendas.

106. Em - August 29, 2008 5:09 PM
@68 & 69 - Don't presume I was defending her or that I necessarily believe that the allegations against her are false. Show me a politician who hasn't been investigated for corruption, in their own state or abroad. However, I did find it interesting that she talked frequently about the investigation prior to most of the country/her state even knowing about it or understanding what was going on. That isn't common practice with politicians - they usually keep their damn mouths shut until they're "allowed" to address the subject. She didn't wait for permission. That's all.
The way I stated it was defnitely off - and thank you #68 for recognizing the real point I was trying to make. People who vote based on party and party alone are more ignorant than people who don't vote at all. (I swear to God if any of you start crying about how your "vote doesn't matter and it comes down to the Electoral College so you're just not going to vote at all" I'm going to blow up the internet.)
I'm so on the fence with this f'ing election it's not even funny.

Any of you liberals who truly believe the government is broken and needs fixing should be wetting your pants over McCain/Palin. Both have solid records of blocking earmarks and pork spending and reforming corrupt politics.
Ah, but that's right. Liberals are, by their nature, hypocrites. So please, go ahead and vote for a junior senator with no background of anything but giving speeches, with his racist, career politician running mate. Go team!

And Down's Syndrome babies are really no different from other babies. The problems are down the road when his disability keeps him at a child level. Of course, Obama believes in post-birth abortion anyway. He'd probably try to kill her baby if he could.

to whoever thought I was gay because I hate all women. I am a woman, retard, which is why this pathetic excuse for one is an insult to me. she hasnt moved out of the dark ages except to accidentally win the race against murkowski. alaskan politics are so incredibly fucked up and stupid that you dont even have to be educated or experienced to do anything. she won in a fluke because she is conservative, christian, likes guns and huntin' shit and has stage presence from her pageants. ick. everyone knows alaska isnt a real state where things like real elections take place and where real politicians exist. she is the equivalent of a sock puppet on sesame street in terms of what she does to govern or in terms of what she knows about the rest of the world. it is so isolated up there and she has been there her whole life and has no idea how things are in the lower 48. have you seen any other pictures of her? she is still wearing the mid 1990's soccermom hairdo because she hasnt gotten the memo yet that that style needs to be updated once a decade or so. and have you seen the pictures of her wearing a gigantic dad animal shawl or something around her shoulders speaking to the AK state legislators? what a freaking joke. she isnt even from this century.
115. Quin - August 29, 2008 5:20 PM
Look, it's simple. The role of the VP candidate during a presidential campaign is to do all the hardball stuff, so the top of the ticket doesn't look "unpresidential". Cheney absolutely killed Edwards at that, since he loved being Darth Vader while Edwards wanted everybody to love him (apparently with some success...). But what will Palin do? Make direct, aggressive, negative charges against Obama? (yeah, everybody loves to see a woman acting like that...) And say what, that he lacks experience? Even if she manages to say that with a straight face, somebody in the room will crack up and it'll end up on the sound bite. This choice forces McCain to make all the direct negative attacks himself, and nobody wants to vote for the angry old man.
116. Your Conscious - August 29, 2008 5:20 PM
Sound like a VP to you?
1) Was in a Miss Alaska Beauty Pageant in 1984
2) Journalism Bachelors Degree (? really, that's all I need to be a world leader?)
3) Had a child only a few months ago, and he has Down's Syndrome
4) Wants to club baby polar bears to make way for drilling in Alaska
5) Wants to teach Creationism in school
6) Wants to throw out Roe vs. Wade
7) Basically anti-gay
8) Lost in the 2002 Alaska Lieutenant Governor's race (she couldn't even get VP governor)
9) resigned from his long-held U.S. Senate seat in mid-term to become governor, Palin interviewed to be his possible successor. Murkowski appointed his daughter, then-Alaska State Representative Lisa Murkowski INSTEAD.
10) Even her own party leaders failed to support her run for the 2006 Governor's election.
11) Her husband actually WORKS for the oil companies
12) Currently under investigation for possible abuse of power after she dismissed the Commissioner of Public Saftey for not firing her former brother-in-law
13) Palin later admitted that members of her staff had made about two dozen contacts with public safety officials about the trooper, including at least one conversation that could appear to be an attempt to pressure the commissioner.
14) Holds a lifetime membership with the NRA
ALL THIS CAN BE FOUND ON HER OWN SITE AND ON WIKIPEDIA. I DIDN'T HAVE TO MAKE ANY OF THIS STUFF UP.
117. Cokeasian - August 29, 2008 5:21 PM
Wow. Here was I hoping McCain was a closet women's rights supporter as people are always hinting. Palin is the WORST type of woman politician. This has crushed whatever faith I hoped to have in him. And to think he's trying to manipulate women into supporting him with that choice! Joe Biden seems alright but I'd have loved to see Hilary take on Palin. She would have destroyed her. They're like two different species.
Someone said "Hillary had a chance because she's perceived as a total hard-ass aggressive manly woman. European leaders like Margaret Thatcher are exactly the same type"
Very good point but I don't know if "manly" is the word I'd use, Thatcher was more "genderless". Benazir Bhutto was undeniably physically attractive but again - the three have/had an aura of seriousness and focus that this beauty queen does not have. They looked pro-active, not passive. Pitchers, not catchers, if you will. Palin looks like a total passive bottom.

"And Down's Syndrome babies are really no different from other babies"
Not true. Down Syndrome babies sort of develop in slow motion, so if you think an infant needs his or her mom for at least the first year, in the case of a Down Syndrome baby it's more like 2 years. If you don't think an infant needs his or her mom, then it's no problem. But I was under the impression that among other beliefs, conservatives think that a mother's traditional role is sacred, especially in the first years of a child's life, and it's not a role to be outsourced to daycare (or nannies). This mom will give her special needs infant ZERO time because it's 24/7 campaigning from here on in, with very little time for a "quick hop home to Alaska." If McCain wins, there's not going to be any free time for 4 more years, especially since VPs are traditionally sent as representatives to various meetings and ceremonies in foreign countries (other than Cheney, who's been much too busy running the country).
If you're a conservative I don't see how you can support her anti-family choice. It's supposed to be God, family, country, in that order. Or are all those beliefs just bullshit after all?
126. Boris - August 29, 2008 5:34 PM

I'm Alaskan in Fairbanks and was absolutely floored by this mornings news. I'm disappointed to see that Sarah would accept a VP offer. However at the same time I'm incredibly excited for her. My disappointment is due to the fact that I didn't want to share our state leader with the rest of the nation. As an independent voter I swear no allegiance to any political party. Instead I vote for who I believe is right for the job. She ran on a platform to be transparent and not be influenced by third party. She's successfully held up to her promise and we Alaskans have been better for it. Her only blemish has been the state trooper firing fiasco, but in the greater scheme of things that's minuscule. Regardless she has maintained transparency and has allowed a full investigation to look into those allegations. Her only draw back for the nation is that no one knows her. We do, and Alaskans love her. She is a breath of fresh air that we need in our governing leaders. Gov. Palin has my full support and I wish her the best in her future political endeavors.

Conservatives will tie themselves up in knots while trying to explain why Palin is experienced enough (as a potential president) while Obama is not, and why Palin is making the correct choices as a mother. I just hope that somewhere there's a transcript of a speech McCain made about the importance of traditional family values.

Well, it didn't take long for the insiders to blab. Apparently absolutely nobody in the McCain campaign knew about the choice until the last minute. It was a true "maverick" moment for McCain - he did that way on purpose and he loved doing it. Except...some of the campaign folks aren't doing a great job of masking how pissed off they are with the choice and the way he handled it. That's all you have to know.

Great choice John McCain! I can't wait to see you win this election with the first woman Vice President in the United States of America! This woman has way more experience then Obama and his campaign is so low and dirty to come out commenting that she has no experience HAHAHAHA!!!!! Obama needs to look in the mirror. Community service and a brand new Senator that's it!!!!
Obama doesn't have a chance with his phony, fake unrealistic bullshit plan. Has anyone forgotten about how he attended Wrights racist church for 20 years? This man is such a phony! His speech was just the same old crap he always says. I can't wait to hear Barack "Apollo" Obama speak without his teleprompters at the debates with McCain. McCain is going to whoop his ass! And fuck this racist crap everyone keeps pulling. The "Messiah" Obama had several speeches where he brought race into this election not McCain. QUOTED BY OBAMA: Did they mention that I'm black? What an asshole for even bringing that shit up! Race has nothing to do with this election. It has to do with having a good leader that can support this nation and keep us secure against the evils of this world and that person is JOHN MCCAIN:)
Let's face it Obama is a good speaker and that's it.

Boy the Dems must be loving this. Their convention went so much better than expected, the Hillary supporters were finally onboard, but...Obama promised so much in his speech that "he's gonna raise taxes!" became a completely justified attack, and of course he was stuck with the whole "Temple of Obama" thing. Throw in a headline-stealing VP choice by McCain - somebody experienced, with solid conservative credentials, a real policy heavyweight attack dog like Cheney - and you've got the recipe for a successful counter-attack.
And then McCain goes and picks Sarah(Dan) Palin(Quayle). Good lord. I bet Obama is taking some time today to figure out where to put that White House basketball court...
147. JamesA - August 29, 2008 6:03 PM
She seems fine. Lot of likeable qualities. Some unlikeable ones, but overall less extremist than either Bush or Cheney.
Gives the McCain ticket some energy, also deprives it of the experience argument against Obama, since she's much less experienced than Obama. But with this pick, we are assured that the next Administration will at least be better than the last one.
Oh, and conservatives: are you lost? This is the Superficial, where we ogle celebrities and chuckle at them. Its sorta sinful stuff, so why don't you go watch the Left Behind movies again or something? We're trying to have some fun here, and you guys are like a turd in the punch bowl.

I like Obama, but if there were no term limits, Bill Clinton would still be president. (I am not advocating for the abolition of term limits... just sayin). His approval ratings, when he left office - after the Lewinski affair - were higher than Bush's ratings for his entire 8 years in office save for about one month following 9/11 when everyone was fooled into thinking he had it under control.

WTF???? He only picked her because he either needed a female or a black person as his VP. Two old men against Barack? Not a chance, but throw in a female and Barack has some competition. The whole point is to win Hillary's voters. Smart for McCain, bad for the country.
By the way, abortion is not about women's rights. It's about women's support and education. It's easier for the government to tell women they have a "choice" by getting rid of their babies, than it is to educate to build strong families that support each other. If women who made people were more supported by fellow human beings, abortion wouldn't even be an issue. But poeple are so quick to judge an unplanned pregnancy as a mistake that was made by the mother. This is horse shit, and we've been eating it like flies. Absolutely there are cases (incest, rape, life endangerment) that aborting a baby should be an option to the mother. But women are using abortions as birth control, or they just don't have a support system to help them through and move forward with a child. Barack Obama is backed by Planned Parenthood and voted against a bill that would have kept babies living that had survived being aborted. He believes it interferes with the mother's "choice". Folks, we're talking about fellow human beings. We have to take care of each other and love one another. It starts with conception. It starts with taking care of the moms, no matter HOW they came to conceive. Nobody cares. What's important is that people that are being made. How can somebody who is running for president have regaurd to human life, if they have no regaurd for the beginning of human life? In Barack's case, he thinks babies only matter if the mother thinks so. He's a great speaker, and would be better than McCain but he doesn't see the sacredness in human life, and this scares me. The only choice a pregnant woman should have to even contemplate is, "What am I going to name the baby?" But as long as humans look down upon unplanned pregnancies, abortion will be the only "empowerment" the government will allow mothers to have. I say we support women who bring people into the world. Whether you like kids or not.

Its a damn shame you people who bad mouth this woman on so much nonsense and not any of the liberals can come up with a good reason on how to run this country without making things up. Think before you speak and get your words right if you think Obama is so perfect you fooling yourself. We need a President and Vice President to get us thru the next 4 years andprop up the military and keep the commies from knocking on our backdoor ; or have the Liberals forgot that ? USA is still the best country in the world we have problems but alot better than any other country Start talking about how to help and fix this country and its freedom instead of insulting any woman who gets picked by a candidate. Remember congress and the senate have a poor rating in both sides in Washington and its both run by Liberals amazing how people forget that part. OHHHH Obama is in that scene, liberals forgot that too. If they can't get that going what is going to happen to this country . Forget the Koran toting Muslims who hate freedom and want woman to wear veils while they wipe there ass on the American flag , "just like liberals in San Fransisco " Liberals will let them fly planes and bomb everything they see. I say No to that. Think before you type on how much you hate a woman being picked by her credentials .

HAHAHAHAHAHA..... saying "commies" in 2008 really blows my mind.

If McCain dies, and she becomes president, she's just going to get all fat.

I like reading the political comments on this site because it helps me understand how on earth George Bush was re-elected (Fox News + talk radio). The factual errors and gaps in logic are hysterical, especially with all the over-the-top raving that sounds like it comes from the Book of Revelation. I understand now that some people have that basic orientation to life, and it's impervious to new learning. So start McCain off with about 35% of the vote, automatically, from these folks, and he only needs to convince another 16% voters and he'll win (less if Nader or anybody else get some votes). I can certainly believe that Bush's smear campaign (example: denigrating a veteran who served, vs. an incumbent who dodged) worked on 15% or so of the population. You can do that well with ad campaigns that convince people to drink a new type of diet soda, even though they all taste like crap.
