As for religion, you really just helped me make my point. Historically, most major religions were designed in part as atool to oppress women and only through centuries of social progress was it turned around. This on top of being a completely insane, irrational bronze-age belief system. Women who then turn around and embrace religion are either so ignorant about the world and/or delusional that despite all the evidence they bury their dumb little heads in the sand and deny absolute fact. And if their concerns are so much more important than things like this that they really know nothing either way, that not even a stray thought about it while falling asleep or daydreaming or watching a movie or television show crossed their mind and spurred a question, and still they positively accept something as complex and omnipresent as their religion with no concern or thought, then their opinions are as sophisticated as those of children. Lisa, thank you. I just came back from visiting my family in Europe and for 3 weeks, I got a nice break from the obesity in the US. Some people are overweight but the overall population is relatively fit and healthy because they watch their portions and sugar/fat intake and they're not afraid to walk a couple kilometers a day.

I stumbled upon this site completely by accident, but I can't leave without touching upon a few points.

I've never watched The Bachelorette; however, my niece does and has come to idolize DeAnna, not because of her perfect body, but because of her character. I am thrilled that a 13-year-old American girl still idolizes someone for their personality rather than their looks, because I can't think of a single individual whose aesthetic value hasn't declined with older age. I realize that this site is called "The Superficial," but perhaps we should spend more time focusing on a person's heart rather than their hips.

My preceding statements epitomize the central problem with modern society: far too much time is wasted on criticizing outward appearance. Every day another young girl decides to use drugs, force herself to puke, completely forego eating, etc. in an attempt to fit pop culture's horribly distorted idea of what is decently attractive. Now eating disorders and steroid use in order to look "acceptable" have spread to young men. It's disgusting. Go ahead, call me a "fattie defender" or whatever you like; I hope someday your teenage daughter fights her own battle with drugs and eating disorders because of an ignorant man's negative comment in regards to her less-than-adequate appearance. I don't really, it's not her fault that her father couldn't recognize a healthy, beautiful woman when he saw one, or at least keep his inappropriate remarks to himself. Furthermore, I would never truly wish that struggle upon another human being. Why? Because I know it from personal experience. Everything you may have heard pertaining to eating disorders is 100% real, folks. It starts with starving for a couple days. The human brain is not meant to function without food, so you begin to see an inaccurate image of yourself in the mirror. In addition to that, your sense of confidence and self-worth drops dramatically along with your desire to spend time with other people. Eventually, your self-control falters because you have to have something to eat, and afterwards you feel so guilty that you desperately search for means to purge. For some, it can go as far as using prescription drugs such as Adderall, and when your body grows accustomed to legal drugs, you start using cocaine, speed, etc. in order to get stronger effects. And guess what? You still see yourself as fat because your brain is so screwed up. When you finally collapse (on Christmas day) and are forced to get help, it's quite an uphill battle. It doesn't matter if you're 10 pounds or 100 pounds overweight to begin with, or not overweight in the least; it all starts with a rude comment from someone who can't keep their arrogant, usually hypocritical mouth shut.

In case you didn't realize, the above outline of a typical battle with an eating disorder is entirely based on my own. I'm about 5'2" and, at the beginning of my disorder, weighed around 125 pounds. I was a Level 8 (out of 10 skill levels) gymnast, so I spent a minimum of 24 hours per week in the gym, and I followed a strict diet. It's up to you to decide whether I was a "fattie" or not. All it took was one comment about my too-thick (muscular) legs to completely destroy my body image. I collapsed in church on Christmas day roughly 6 months after that comment was made, and I spent the better part of the next year slowly restoring my physical and mental health; I will be 17 in August. No one that young should ever have to endure that. Sadly, it happens every day.

The moral of the story? IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. Think before you speak; consider the potential consequences. If you're unsure whether you should say something, don't say it. I personally have never regretted keeping my mouth shut in that type of situation. And for all of you who will laugh at this comment, proceed to criticize DeAnna's aesthetics and speculate on mine to boot: you should really do something more productive with your time, perhaps that would do society some good.

P.S. 141, I'm very sorry to have taken offense to something that has had a huge impact on my life. It's entirely possible as well as acceptable to defend yourself without being on estrogen pills, after all.
