Do you deny that it is wasteful and selfish to own multiple mansions? There are so many causes in the world that I'm not sure the power would be significantly shifted. Moreover, the upper middle class and wealthy can create and completely fund their own charities and help in ways they see fit. Many do already have charities but, really they give very little of their OWN money to them, usually they just solicit and hold fundraisers and then feel like proud philanthropists which they most certainly are not. I think with proper initiative people can choose to give back in responsible ways. Charities is such a broad term but, there are ways to give back without significantly shifting power; hire a team to go build houses in New Orleans and put your own money into it. Find out what medical equipment a children’s hospital needs and buy it for the hospital. It goes on and on whatever a person is passionate about they can find away to contribute to it. Love sports? Pay to have an arena built in a school in a low income area. If people are smart they can give back and make sure that it goes straight to the cause and doesn't give any power to the wrong areas or to people/groups with negative agenda's. With millions and billions you can call the shots if that's what’s important. With just a brain and some research you can make sure your money is well used. Since the wealthy and more so celebrities have such big ego's I'd love to see them competing over who is more generous and at least then they're ego's would be good for something.

Of course the government is a horrific example of how money can be poorly used. If a business ran the way our governments do they’d be pathetic laughable bankrupt failures. In general I look at the government as a problem causer not solver and I pay my taxes because it's more trouble not to but, I expect little from my government. However, paying my taxes will never satisfy my need to give back. It's all about community, there are so many ways to give back you just have to look or be creative. At least where I live the government pays for healthcare so I'm willing to pay my taxes for that benefit alone.

Again it goes back to taking moral responsibility. The reason that the government isn't able to solve everything is because 1. They never really promised to and 2. The problems in this world are bigger than that and require everyone pitching in if there is to be any hope of solving them.

In the end you’re basically arguing to defend Oprah's right to have seven mansions. I do think people can do whatever they want with their own funds. Call it shellfish, call it not looking for the greater good, call it whatever you want. They get to use whatever they have. My parent's paid for private schooling from grade school to medical, while still paying taxes for government funded schools. I was not the only one at those private schools, technically with less people in the government schools and the same resources in they should have more resource for those people who are still in the system, yet most government schools are piss poor in performance in comparison to their privately funded counterparts; we pay more for higher quality.

A moral economic obligation from my parents, from their parents, from all of us down the genetic line, each one doing his best to be a productive member of society, pay taxes to provide for those who are not, and provide the best possible course of success, finance, and government sponsored independent action for their offspring; so that they might turn around and have the means to do the same for their own offspring. The world is not my mother, it is not my father, nor my children. It, and those strangers in it, have done everything possible to impede the success of myself and those around me. You argue morals as if they are facts when in reality they are beliefs. Beliefs, are internal intrinsic properties of the human condition, therefor, they cannot be argued. They may be shared, held and let go of, but they never weigh in with as much force as facts. Ultimately, they only apply to the people who hold them to be true and are null, void, invalid and inapplicable to those who do not.

Well there are my parents, but my genetic family has a long standing tradition of making sure each generation can provide for itself. There are the schools, but they were paid, tuition, for their evaluation of me, so they might test my knowledge and, upon good evaluation, give me a piece of paper that states that I know what am doing in a certain field of study. There is no charity here, payment of services without any effort, on my part, does not guarantee me a certificate of completion.

If, one of my loved ones should get cancer, then I, we, will pay for cancer treatment. The best treatment that is available, and in experimental cases, unavailable to the world at large; which you usually have to pay for.
