So why did the Academy snub Brad Renfro by not including him in the memoriam? The Academy is pretty much tight as a drum.
A flack tells us a small group of people make extremely difficult choices but refused to say what criteria are used to make those decisions. She added we shouldn't waste our time cause no one would discuss it further.
Could it have something to do with the circumstances surrounding Renfro's death? It's uncomfortable to applaud when an actor dies from an overdose. Of course, exceptions must be made for huge stars who OD. Heath Ledger made the cut

Brad died before the Jan 31st cutoff date, but he may not have been an actual member of the Academy at the time of his death. The "In Memoriam" reel is for deceased academy members (regardless of nominations/awards or branch/profession). Check out their website. They list the members who have died since Feb. 2007. Renfro's not on the list. Also, Roy Scheider died in Feb. 2008 so he should be included in next year's show.
How does a person become a member of the Academy? Here's what I found - Membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is by invitation only. The Academy sends out invitations to a very limited number of qualified members of the film community once a year. Membership in the Academy normally fluctuates between 6,000 and 6,500 voting members.
Candidates for membership are proposed by current Academy members and then voted on by committees consisting of prominent representatives of the Academy's 14 branches - directors, screenwriters, documentary filmmakers, etc. A candidate normally has the backing of at least two members of the branch for which he/she may qualify. Candidates must receive an endorsement by the appropriate branch executive committee before their name is given to the Board of Governors for its approval.
The Academy has tightened their entrance standards, with only the most impressive candidates invited to join the distinguished group. Academy Award nominees, if not already members, are automatically considered for membership (but not guaranteed an invitation to join).
The majority of the members are from the United States of America, however membership is not limited to U.S. citizens. Members remain eligible to vote until they have passed on or opted for retired (non-voting) status.

Katherine Heigl is attempting to look glamorous, when in fact she always looks alike a robust German Frau that should be milking cows in the Black Forest.
Alba needs a more forgiving hairstyle and should stay away from awards where good acting is rewarded.

Heidi Klum and Katherine Heigl are definitely the best looking, outhotting the other 3 by far (Alba, Garner and Cotillard) who are like at the same level.

Marion Cotillard looks the best. She has a very natural, genuine look to her rather than the fake, over-exposed look that most American celebrities have.
She should have worn a ruby red dress which would have gone better with her dark hair and fair skin.

#69 - I completely agree. I've been here for a few years and it's not like there is a shortage of beautiful American women, but when it comes to American celebrities it's downright pathetic. It's mostly high maintenance but average looks combined with mediocre or nonexistent talent. I don't know if it's the nepotistic nature of the business or just low expectations.
