I have to say I'm stunned by the viciousness I'm reading on this site. What if Britney, instead of being rich and famous, was your sister or daughter or mother or "significant other"? Most people with lung cancer smoked for years, even after they knew better. Alcoholics and addicts choose to take the first drink or first pill, without realizing they've just condemned themselves to a life of degradation. Do they not deserve compassion and all help available? Since I'm not a medical specialist of any kind, I can't know what Britney's problem is, but when you look at her life, its never been normal. She didn't really have a childhood because she had to look and perform as an adult at a very young age. She's been hounded by the media for as long as she can remember. How would any of you like to have your greatest heartbreaks laid out for the public to see every tear you've shed and every screw-up you've ever committed. She's human and she's had to function under a giant microscope. If she is, indeed, mentally ill, that is as serious an illness as cancer or diabetes or heart disease, and one of the most tragic illnesses anyone could have. Mental illness causes the sufferer to behave in a bizarre manner, it isn't a choice on the part of the sick person. No, this always happens when the person is deemed to be a danger to themselves. They get taken to the hospital, not jail. If they were taken to the jail and ended up hurting themselves in the custody of the police, the police could be held liable. When you get put on a 5150 hold, that means a judge signed an order saying you are a danger to yourself, and you get held for 72 hours minimum.
This is how it happens with normal people too, not just celebrities.
And on COPS, you just see them getting cuffed. You *do* often get cuffed when you're taken in on a 5150, to keep you from harming yourself. If you've already committed a crime, such as domestic battery, you might get arrested, but if you're deemed a danger to yourself, you'll still either get taken in on a 5150, or put on suicide watch at the jail. People even get transported from jail TO the 5150, because cops aren't trained medical professionals, all they can do in jail is make you strip naked and take EVERYTHING out of your cell- if you need medical help, you go to the psych ward. The only difference here is poor people in LA are taken to USC-County, whereas Brit went to Cedars Sinai, a much nicer hospital (County can't turn anyone away).
