If you want to be flippant instead of trying to come up with something insightful, go for it. Whatever makes you happy, man. This is thesuperficial, after all, so I'm probably in the wrong to be defending anyone in earnest anyway.

Even so, nobody has said she's a visionary. The only reason I brought up those other people who are generally regarded as having greater, "more important" merits was to illustrate the point that she's hardly the first musician/writer/artist/whatever to have a drug habit or lifestyle that many people tend to object to.

Here's why I think Amy Winehouse is cool:

She writes the bulk of her own music and hires real musicians (not "producers") to co-arrange it with her.

The production on her last record is really well thought out, and it wouldn't hurt for other artists around today to bag all the pro tools, canned production and try to do something a little more sophisticated.

She can actually sing, and does so live (when she shows up, anyway) without lip synching or the use of DAT tapes.

And perhaps most importantly, she's one of only 2 or 3 Soul artists today who can play music and respects all the old Stax and Motown records (when production and talent meant something) without trying to just ape them.

Yes, she has a drug habit, and that's unfortunate. But she's not the first, and she's not likely to be the last.

I saw Amy sing 2 weeks ago in Newcastle and she nailed her 90 min performance. The English press play on her weaknesses and those who pray on her far too much.
Personally, although she looked liked she'd ate a gazzilion spacecakes and had a couple of moments where she got confused between her backing singers and her own lines....she did a decent job and doesnt need to be crucified continuously by the media.
