I think Beyonce is doing very well for herself as a young African-American female. I think she is very talented as well, even if most of her songs are only little ditties about trite concerns and make me question the intelligence and/or depth of whoever wrote them. Thankfully the songwriting has improved with the last album. The only problem, is, I'm not sure if she is supposed to inspire me or make me feel bad about being Black. I guess the thing that gets to me the most is her hair. It is true that many Black women in the public eye wear weaves, but most do it a realistic manner. Beyonce, on the other hand, wears unrealistic and implausible hairstyles that make her look more White. Like, the only way she could look like that was if she WAS White. In addition, I would say that her big hair is a major component of her appearance. In her appearances and videos, she makes a HUGE deal about swinging it around. If Beyonce took out her wig/weave, she would NOT be Beyonce. I don't think many people realize how deep-seated the hair issue is for Black people. As Black women, our hair is so radically different from the majority and most of us haven't really accepted our hair. Many of us get by through straightening it, maybe putting in an occasional weave to accentuate what we already have. But Beyonce's hairpieces just look totally different from that of any black woman I've every seen. I mean, am I supposed to believe that she's Latina or something? When I look at Beyonce, she tells me, "Black is ugly. White and/or Latina is beautiful." Right now I wear my hair natural. It is attractive, but it is difficult, because it cuts directly across the norm. Every time I see Beyonce, I think to myself, "if I just bought a wig, I would look as beautiful as others think she looks." I don't know why it hurts, but it does. Beyonce is not extraordinarily hot. She has just chosen to be fake and has rejected the usual appearance of Black hair (relaxed or natural), so that she can look more like a White/Latino person. Beyonce has gone above and beyond to reject her Blackness. It is disgusting and not only is she hating her Blackness, but she is hating the Blackness of all Black women. Especially, the really Black ones, who can't hide it because their skin is too dark, or who choose to love themselves and how they really look. Black women already receive persecution from the majority culture, and from many Black men, and now we need to get it from Beyonce, the so-called queen of beauty who is Black....but then again, she's not. I wish I could tune her out.

And then there's the issue of how Beyonce keeps finding new ways to look like she is doing soft porn. I don't want to really waste time on that one, it's self-explanatory. Sex sells, and Beyonce is the most revealing artist I've seen...she refuses to be outdone, even if it means adopting an alter-ego (Sasha) to do so.

Whatever. Beyonce insults women in general with how she shows herself off so much...there is no sense of pride or self-worth. And people still portray her as classy? Beyonce insults Black women by trying to be as White as possible with her fake hair. Since her hair is the primary reason for her attractiveness, and also the primary difference between her and any other Black woman, she sends the message that Blackness is unacceptable and ugly. She insults me.

I wish India Arie was the new Beyonce. Black women and women in general do not need Beyonce.
