The concept of jail as the government saw it was inspired by King Lear who never took action because any decision to punish made you just as guilty for punishing while letting someone go was no good either, so prison was meant as a sort of purgatory. Punishment isn't part of the design but of course it's worked it's way in there because people think it's just, like an eye for an eye.

This isn't a comment about Paris Hilton, but don't judges and lawyers say people go to prison to be rehabilitated? not punished.

I am totally disgusted to hear that Paris Hilton was released from jail. It was bad enough that her sentence was reduced. She is a spoiled brat and over privileged rich kid. My son, Brian who is her same age was a U.S. Marine for four years and he fought at the beginning of the war in Iraq. He was shot at for months, had explosions go off all around him regularly, stayed awake for days on end driving an Am-Trak loaded with Marines, went without food and water for days, was hit with extreme heat and endless dust storms, didn’t have a complete shower until they left Iraq, got ambushed on a re-con mission with just two Am-Traks of Marines against 200 of Sadam’s soldiers, fought their way out of the ambush with zero losses to Marines, and on and on. At no time during or since has he ever complained, even when he never received the medal for bravery he should have gotten for his actions during the ambush. Not once did my son try to escape the shit he was in with claims of a rash or impending mental breakdown or what ever else little Paris has going on.
