The definition of obese - as someone already posted - is having a BMI of 30% fat which, quite frankly, happens on thin people as well as fat people; it just happens more frequently with fat people and we notice it more.

Obesity results as much from lack of exercise as it does from eating too much, or not eating properly. So yes, many of you loser people whose daily exercise is playing eight hours of Warcraft while inhaling the jar of Pringles are just as unhealthy as legitimately obese people. And recent medical research has indicated quite clearly that if you pick 1000 people randomly (not just one random person), the subgroup of people who are even moderately overweight (15-20 lbs) have more medical problems and illnesses, and less general physical health, as compared to the subgroup of people who are not overweight. Not everybody in the overweight group is unhealthy and not everybody in the normal-weight group is healthy, but if you're overweight, the odds are against you. The probably is that the overweight group has 2 times as many people in it these days as the normal-weight group.

Those are the medical health facts. Self-esteem is a different (psychological) issue. Confounding them doesn't help anybody.

I was not fully happy with my post because I know from experience that eating disorders are very serious psychological illnesses with very low recovery rates. I decided to post what I had written and see the reactions I got because I am not fully sure how I feel on this topic and I actually use the Superfish to warm up my writing muscles and to learn from other people's opinions. I think underneath all the superficial stuff a lot of the posters here are brilliant and their social commentaries are fascinating.

What bothers me is that there are a good number of people in the world who are not trying at all to take care of themselves wether they over eat or smoke or whatever and those people are wasting tax payers money and precious medical time and ressources because they are truly not trying at all to take care of themselves and society is paying the price for their selfishness. There was an article in the NY Times recently about people who appear thin but have large deposits of fat around their organs and face some of the same heath risks as overweight people. It's about an all-around healthy lifestyle. At the end of the day though, for the majority of situations, being thin may not equal being healthy, but being overweight does equal being unhealthy, and that's still a problem. i'm european, so i never saw american idol (besides pictures and those funny videos on the "internets"), i have no idea if the girl can or cannot sing, but if she won, that's probably cause she can. i've looked at the images of jordan on this video and she looks perfectly healthy! yes, she's bigger than nicole richie and paris and all those talentless celebrities, however she's pretty far from being obese! i, for one, am big. i'm huge! i have a bmi of 26.5, which is like 2 more than what my bmi should be, and i'm MUCH fatter than this girl, so she looks just about right. now if you start judging talent on physical grounds, jennifer hudson, kathy bates, marie dressler, hattie mcdaniel and many other actors shouldn't have won their oscars, right? what really gets on my nerves is that if it were a big boy no one would've said anything! and you were right, i SO felt like punching her in the throat!

This "American Idol" is not even an adult yet, and already she's enormously fat (by world standards, not America's bloated standards) because she lacks the self-discipline to refrain from stuffing her face at the dinner table. Am. Idol sucked this year anyway, couldn't even watch the stupid show, only in the beginning when the true assholez performed.

She is awesome. However, the Idol show in Mexico is much better. They don’t have the contestants stand and sing like stiffs. Instead, the contestants all put on choreographed dance numbers while singing. They also wear cute little costumes. The judges also sit on a clear platform with dolphins swimming underneath them. It is a lot more fun to watch. I wish I could get the Mexican version with my cable service.

I'd like to say a few words to those who think that being thin means constantly being healthy. someone said before that he/she knows some thin people who eat more junk than their 'bigger' sisters. it is so! and there's no doubt about that. I've got many friends who weight about 50kg, I think it's around 110lbs or so. in American means quite size 0, and they have got more medical problems than those who actually work out.
the thing is that when you have good genetics, you tend to think that 'hey, whatthehell, I don't need to work out - I'm skinny by nature' - they smoke, drink, eat less (usually cakes, pastries [I believe they're called so]), they always have an energy drink and coke in their bags etc etc. i don't say it's common, but it happens.
and actually it all comes down to your height. you cannot expect a 6ft woman to be size 0 and look normal.i mean, how the hell she'd be like in bed? all bones sticking out?

After reading many of these posts, I was out yesterday at the zoo and today at the lake, and I was paying attention to how many overweight people there were. I was actually shocked at how many overweight and or obese people were there. I guess I don't really pay it any mind. It's very sad really. Now Jordin isn't that bad, she's tall and large built, but not obese. She's much smaller than most that I saw over the weekend.

I feel really bummed. For a year now I've been taking Tae Kwon Do 4 days a week, and walk an hour 3 days a week. I cut out all junk food, drink 6 large glasses of water a day, and don't eat in between meals, and I'm still the same size (16). On the other hand my cholesterol is about 160, and my blood pressure is 112 over 71. My blood sugar is around 100. The doctor told me I am extremely healthy. But I still have a big chest and a huge ass. WTF, do I need to starve myself now??

Sure, a small percentage of fat people work out, play sports, and don't have health problems. So do a small percentage of heavy drinkers and smokers. It's called hitting the genetic lottery. Genetics are the single most important factor in health and longevity. If you got lucky, good for you. Everybody else has to not smoke, try to avoid drinking too much, and keep from gaining too much weight. Everybody knows that.

A few other "fat but fit" folks are talking it up big now, when they're relatively young. Most illnesses that cause early death or compromise the quality of life occur after the age of 50. Good luck carry a lot of extra weight from the ages of 50-70, and staying active and physically fit. Bodies are machines and they break down under prolonged excessive load. Everybody knows that.

a) people say shitty things about fat people, thin people, all kinds of people. some people have a hard time losing weight, i know some people who look anorexic and eat a lot of food and simply are unable to gain weight.

b) we do have an obesity problem in america. parents are sitting around not doing anything and their kids are following suit. the tv, computer, and video games that have bewitched all of us are taking up valuable outside-playing time from adults and children.

c) it *is* wrong that this obesity issue is putting such a strain on our health system. at the same time it is not going to be solved by making fun of fat people because it hasn't worked yet, has it?

d) i am overweight, but my sister had a child and that spurred both of us to get out of our sedentary lifestyles. we got ourselves a personal trainer, some mp3 players, and a healthy shopping list. i'm not thin and i won't be thin next week but my niece isn't going to get blobby watching me sitting there being blobby. it's not the responsibility of the government, fast-food joints, or anyone else to manage someone's weight or prevent obesity. it's everyone's own job to ensure the health of themselves and their children. if people refuse to acknowledge their issues and work on them to become healtiher, i don't believe it's the responsibility of the medical establishment to protect them from themselves. i'm not waiting for a magic pill or some gastric bypass, and i feel sorry for everyone who is because clearly they have forgotten what fun it is to just turn off the tv and go outside to play.

Jordin is definitely beautiful and definitely big-boned, but she is also definitely overweight. Obese? No. But she IS overweight. It's a shame that anorexia is such a problem in this country that we have had to over-compensate by calling people who are definitely oveweight "normal." Just because something has become the average does not mean it is "normal." World-wide, in first-world countries, Jordin's level of being overweight is far from normal, and most non-Americans in first-world countries manage to maintain a healthier weight without having anorexia problems. Dunno what America's problem is, and this woman is wrong for saying that it should influence voter's decisions in a singing contest, but we DO need to have the guts to say enough is enough and that a size 12 is NOT healthy. A 12 being healthy was only true 40 years ago before vanity sizing. It is no coincidence when people go around saying size 12 or 14 is healthy but the US still has the highest rates of cancer, heart disease, diabetes etc among 1st world countries. Just because someone should be a 6 or 8 doesn't mean you're saying they need to be a 0.
