But really, public schools cater to the lowest common denominator. If a kid has any intelligence at all, it's best to get them into an institution where they can learn at an advanced pace about things they're actually interested in.

Homeschooling might help in some areas, but for the most part it raises social retards. Kids need to interract with other kids of different backgrounds, not just adults with one viewpoint.

While I think there are many problems with home schooling, I also think that the public education system is in trouble.

Not only are there the generic problems of lack of funding and ridiculous testing that does nothing for children such as in the "no child left behind" program, but there is the fact that our children are not being taught what they really need to know to be successful in life.

Kids should be learning financial and technological skills to be able to not only make it in today's market place, but also to be able to manage their personal finances and have desired job skills.

We also need to stop acting like teaching science in school is an act of religious rebellion when religion should not be in our schools period.

We also need more hands on training through internships in high school as just reading a book and listening to a teacher does not teach you how to handle on the job situations.

There needs to be a revision of our education system, because what worked in the 50's - reading, writing and arithmetic are just not enough to survive anymore.

I agree with Will Smith in that schools are not teaching our children what they need to know. I use close to nothing that I learned in high school for my career now.

My Master's degree also held a lot of fluff in it. The best parts were the internships that afforded me actual experience. My Ph.D. was better, but by then I had endured a lot of years that offered very little to the job skills I needed later in life.

Beyond job skills, tell me why most kids out of high school do not know how the stock market works, how to invest their money, how to stay out of huge amounts of credit card debt and why many of them have no idea how to create realistic financial plans? These are basic skills and yet our schools continue to fail our kids by not teaching them.

Clearly, that sort of learning environment did not work well for Mr. Smith. However, it is a mode that has been around for quite a long time, oh say Aristotle, and has been beneficial for who knows how many people.

School (public or private) offers a hell of a lot beyond just the basic curriculum. Kids need school to learn all sorts of non-academic skills.

85- not true. It is completely unnatural to be stuck in a classroom with 20 - 30 people your own age. Mine is articulate, goes to church, does his school work, acts up every so often, probably does things online that I wouldn't like, gets along with others, his age or not, plays lacrosse, football, and basketball. The difference is mine is a quick learner and the local schools do not want to move him ahead because of social implications.

We don't shelter him, we are brutally honest about issues such as sex, homosexuality, pornography, but he also is aware of where we stand on said issues. I don't see what he is missing out on by not being in school. Socialization? please...not a problem here!

Not a HS advocate for everyone as not all parents can effectively HS, regardless of their good intentions.

#86...I taught public school. I had plenty of homeschooled kids enter my class since many parents who HS can't handle it once their kids are in middle school. Every single HS child I got was academically a star.

But...they ALL had major issues making friends and following the standards of a classroom. They often lacked respect for teachers since they never had to show much for their parents.

I know this isn't the way all HS families work. I know many make an effort to get their children in clubs and sports so that they can have normal social activities.

Sadly, many are like this because there are many HSing people who do it to shelter their kids from the outside world. One of my neighbors is like that. She won't even let her children go to the park for fear of what they might pick up.

I am generalizing, I know. HSing is wonderful if done right.

#42: I agree with you pretty much there. Homeschooling and public schooling both have problems. I think I read somewhere that high school as an educational structure was thought up for men BY men in the late 1890s. It's seriously outmoded and needs an overhaul.

However, I feel homeschooling is a poor substitute. Education should broaden one's horizons, not limit them, and that what I think homeschooling does, as I feel strongly that it is more about the parents' need to control what the child is learning and less about the quality of education they receive. The religious-based mentality of "I want you to learn thus and so, because it's what I believe personally," rather than "here's a set of ideas; make up your own mind about it." I've learned more reading on my own than I did in school, so Smith's partly right on that score. But then again, some people might need more hands-on instruction and guidance.

Every time I see kids in the store with their mother in the middle of a day when school is not out, I assume they're homeschooled and want to levitate. Not that all homeschool moms do this, but some absolutely do.

Then, they come home, and you pick up where public school fails and you fill in all of the blanks. You can't rely solely one the public school system, I agree. As a public school teacher and a licensed attorney who is struggling to pay off law school loans on a teacher's salary, I can, without any apprehension, say FUCK YOU WILL SMITH. #143 has a point - I know many good parents who homeschool on top of sending their kids to school.

I can always tell when school has started because the neighborhood boys become much more aggressive and the neighborhood girls become much more mean and catty. Not to mention that both the girls and boys learn lots of bad language from the other kids. The younger they are, the more pronounced this is.

The parents really struggle to undo the damage -- in between the hours of homework the kids bring home in backpacks that are bigger than they are.

Personally, I'm enjoying my kids too much to mess things up by sending them to school. We're just too busy, and they're learning too much without it. I'd hate to interrupt their learning -- and their love of learning -- by sending them to an instutition all day long where their time is mostly wasted with busy work.

Frankly, what we're doing is easier than spending your time undoing the damage that most public schools do.

While I applaud the good teachers, their hands are tied by the administrators and the teachers' unions.

But to a certain extent, the basic knowledge you gain makes you a well rounded person who is able to fully function in society.
