If I have bronchitis and go to the doctor hoping they will give me something to treat it, I don't take a bunch of DayQuil before going in, I want them to see that I really am sick and need help. Same principle. Meds only cover up the symptoms, they don't cure anything. Also, someone I am close to has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's and so I've read a bit about the meds for it and they don't sound too great. They need to find a real cure instead of just throwing drugs at people, for that and many other illnesses. End of rant.

I am fuming right now. I had heard that Rush Limbaugh had criticized Michael J. Fox's ad for stem cell research saying that he was exaggerating his Parkinson's symptoms, but I just heard what he actually said as they aired it on MSNBC and I am just disgusted.

He basically said that Fox was faking it. What infuriates me the most is that my dad has Parkinson's disease and that is EXACTLY what it looks like.

Now, medications help, but there are things that can make you jerk around like that even when you are on them... stress, lack of sleep, too much protein in the diet and even taking the meds late.

Also, the meds can only do so much in advances stages. My father cannot walk, he cannot eat or drink without risk of choking and he looks just like Fox and he is on medication!

Fox testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Hearing on Parkinson's Research and Treatment on September 28, 1999. The full transcript is here. Fox also talked about the hearing in his book:

"I had made a deliberate choice to appear before the subcommittee without medication. It seemed to me that this occasion demanded that my testimony about the effects of the disease, and the urgency we as a community were feeling, be seen as well as heard. For people who had never observed me in this kind of shape, the transformation must have been startling."

Without the medication, his Parkinson's symptoms -- stiffness, tremors, "freezing up" -- would have been more visible. But was this sneaky? Shouldn't he have told the subcommittee that day that they were seeing him unmedicated?

Umm, yes, he did. From that transcript:

"For many people with Parkinson's, managing their disease is a full-time job; it is a constant balancing act. Too little medicine causes tremors and stiffness, too much medicine produces uncontrollable movement and slurring, and far too often Parkinson's patients wait and wait (as I am right now) for their medicines to kick in."

And please note that, as others have said, the symptoms he showed in that commercial were NOT Parkinson's symptoms. They were the side-effects of his L-Dopa medication.

"Could a patient on Parkinson's show such symptoms even while he was on his medication? . ... William J. Weiner M.D., professor and chairman of the department of neurology at the University of Maryland Medical Center [and] director of the Parkinson's clinic there, [says]:

'What you are seeing on the video is side effects of the medication. He has to take that medication to sit there and talk to you like that. ... He's not over-dramatizing. ... [Limbaugh] is revealing his ignorance of Parkinson's disease, because people with Parkinson's don't look like that at all when they're not taking their medication. They look stiff, and frozen, and don't move at all. ... People with Parkinson's, when they've had the disease for awhile, are in this bind, where if they don't take any medication, they can be stiff and hardly able to talk. And if they do take their medication, so they can talk, they get all of this movement, like what you see in the ad.'" (source)

Given that he has been honest in the past about being on or off medication in media appearances, I think he's being honest now. He wasn't off his meds (which wouldn't have helped with the flailing anyway.). He wasn't faking. Outside of carefully framed and edited appearances in tv entertainment, he does look that bad.

If you want to argue for or against embryonic stem cell research, fair enough. But don't waste people's time repeating talking points without giving the full context of whatever you vaguely claim to remember. Of course, if any of you have links to testimony he gave before Congress, and any proof that he was sneaking off his meds then, I'll be glad to look at them.

These fractures disable the body's nerves that control breathing. The paramedics at the event when he was injured saved his life for a while with proper medical care.

It is anguish itself for me to see an uncontrolled disease such as MJF's get lambasted when he is supporting a search for a cure. The medication simply eases the discomfort he may feel. Additionally, he must balance his diet to keep up with increased metabolic demands. It is a 24 hour job. One reason why we will never be able to control symptoms of chronic diseases, let along cure them, is because of brain chemistry. L-Dopa is made in the brain, and does not cross the blood-brain barrier. Finding a way around this obstacle is where stem-cell research shows the most promise.

Stem cell research should be apolitical. Not every embryo will grow into an adorable bundle of joy in 9 months. 20% of pregnancies fail in the first six weeks; most go unrecognized. Nature's way is to allow the non-viable pregnancies to fail. Stem-cell research opens a door to possibility of a cure for many injuries and ailments.

cures for cancer, alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, parkinson's; vaccinations for aids, bird 'flu, etc. I am thankful to be living in a time where turning 70 (if one lives in a first world country) is nothing special and daily medical advances are phenomenal... but in the end no amount of plastic surgery, preventive medical measures or chemotherapy etc will prevent the ultimate: death. I completely agree: watching a loved one die of any sort of disease is absolutely awful - I unfortunately have had to witness it in my direct family and close cirlce of friends too many a time. But the question is always whether it is better to prolong a miserable existence of someone who has to be permanently on medication (which has loads of other side effects) after their treatment or worrying about the cancer coming back, etc - or whether it might not be better to make the remaining days as comfortable and peaceful as possible. In my eyes, prolonging a suffering is not humane - it is cruel and selfish most of the time. Clinging to life because life is LIFE... well.

If they could find a cure for Parkinson's and other diseases by doing stem cell research, I am all for it. But not if it means that in the end all it does is prolong suffering.

I completely agree. My grandfather is in a nursing home now and suffers from Parkinsons. It is hard to watch someone go through this. There will be other ways to continue the research. I just dont know that I believe half of what I hear. I just wish I could raise enough money to free Kavorkian. I believe people should not suffer in this manner. @169 -- Thanks for your kind words. I work in a busy ER as an RN and I wish that there was more comfort and hope I could offer to these really sick patients and their families.

@170 -- You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. There are new medications and new therapies that have been developed in the last decade that have saved countless lives. Heart disease is managable. Diabetes is managable. Cancer survival rates at 5 year intervals are rising for everything except lung cancer directly caused by smoking.

Health care professionals battle diseases like obesity, heart disease and mental illness (including alcoholism) on a daily basis. We aren't judgemental; we treat whatever comes through the door. Every patient we see (hospital-wide) is in some sort of crisis and needs support, not bashing. If you think hospital work, in any capacity, is easy, you have no idea what hospital work is like.

Try comforting a patient with dementia (go to a nursing home and volunteer for a few hours; they always need help). Try dealing with a patient who has Huntington's disease -- that's a completely horrid disease.

Any disease or injury with a neuroligical basis simply needs replacement of the neurons (such as stem cells) to regenerate. Neurons simply don't grow back. Once that pathway is gone, it's gone. That's why stem cell research holds such promise; it will help to regenerate new neurons. How could you say no to a child or young adult struggling with spina bifida? How heartless are you?

As you have implied that I am "lazy, soft-hearted liberal" nothing could be farther from the truth. I would appreciate an apology for such disparging remarks.

If not, I suggest you find a nice big rare steak, follow it up with a giant helping of fetticine alfredo, drink heavily and smoke 3 packs of cigaretts a day. That will insure your speedy departure from your pain in the ass status you grandly deserve.

Apparently none of you have ever read Fox's book where he ADMITTED that he PURPOSELY manipulates his medications to exaggerate his symptoms. He admitted to Diane Sawyer that he did this when he testified before congress.THAT is why Rush was wondering if that is what he was doing THIS time.
