I'm always amused by these things. She's what American men are looking for in long-term relationship material, but only a fraction of a percentage of them have the slightest chance of a relationship, long-term or otherwise, with her. Like when a male celebrity gets married and the media says things like, women across America are bummed because so-and-so's off the market. Like they ever had a shot.

I have mixed feelings about Miss Alba. I've never really seen any of her movies, so I've never seen her in action. I've only seen some of her pictures and interviews. I've heard that there's something seductive about the way she moves. I’m all for the way someone moves being an integral part of their sexiness. This is an advantage that actresses have, but rarely take advantage of, over models in demonstrating their sexiness. Models stay still, actresses move. So I’ve heard Miss Alba moves wonderfully, but I've also heard that it's deliberately seductive. I personally find anything that deliberate to be highly unsexy. I like people who are sexy by accident, not people who try to be sexy. Jessica Alba seems like she works at being sexy, although some aspects of her appeal are obviously effortless. She's a pretty, but average girl who has worked very hard on her body. It's obvious that she's perfectionistic about sculpting her body, for health-based and image-related reasons.

In a way, I guess, she's inspirational to young women: she looks incredibly healthy (this could be an illusion), she's not thin but of average and semi-athletic build compared to professional models who always look super thin, she's got a proportionally sized chest unlike all the large-breasted types we see out there, she's not your typical blonde chick, and she hasn't stripped herself all the way down to the nude for any public venue. She's a testament to what a pretty girl can be when she works her body to its fullest potential, doesn't go anorexic (although Alba sadly fought that battle in the past) and gets regularly kissed by the sun. Alongside a few other public figures, men and women alike, she's indirectly inspired me to get in shape, like I never have before - I always fell back on being unusually thin by nature. But the beauty tide has turned recently. Has anyone noticed that? Being extremely thin is still looked upon as sexy, but it's looked upon moreso as fashionable and chic these days. To be sexy, people are demanding more curves and flesh again. I think this is great. It takes the pressure off the ladies. As long as we don't go to the other extreme again and make fun of naturally thin and smaller-breasted women as being less "womanly," which is nonsensical. There's many different body types and flavors of beauty. It would be silly to make a categorical choice among them, as if beauty was anything more than a subjective, personal response anyway. I must say, though, that the skinniness in our culture has been taken to an unsexy, not to mention unhealthy and unrealistic, extreme. People are down with more muscle tone these days, thankfully. I've decided to stop fighting the tide - I'll be getting toned and tanned, although it's ridiculously hard to do when you're constantly studying and you're on the east coast.

All this aside, there's something about Jessica Alba that reminds me of a 16-year-old girl. Maybe it's the way that she strains to get her carnal aspects noticed, by wearing certain things and posing in certain ways that indicate a sexual immaturity. I feel mixed about this because at her very best, I've seen her look like a pretty pin-up girl with a graceful athleticism about her, while at her worst, she's looked like your usual trashy LA girl. I'm not going to evaluate her as a Latina because I'm not Latina, so I have no right to say who counts as a better-looking Latina. I agree that Salma Hayek is one hell of a Latina. But that's not necessarily a reason to disparage Jessica's type of Latinaness. There's something strained about her look, though, because it's clear she's trying hard to climb her way up the hotness and fuckability polls. If you've seen the evolution that's taken place in her look over the years, you'll see that there's effort involved in getting people to recognize you as "hot," even if you've got the basic materials of hotness. That's why she's chosen the films and graced the kinds of magazines she has, in order to get the feedback she wants from people - that yes, she's hot. It's a goal of hers, even though she does have a sense of humor about it. (I'd normally give her props for that, but I have to be a hardass by saying that the sense of humor seems calculated too - it's probably her way of keeping her seriousness, about getting people to call her hot, in check. Doing that is supposed to make you seem even hotter to guys, by saying that you don't even take your own hotness seriously, and she knows that. So she's not totally dumb.) However, her face is nothing special and is actually quite repugnant to me. This is what makes her generic. You can be both hot and generic at the same time, so we don't need to argue that she's one or the other. There's not a hint of intelligence and mystery in her face. This isn't something you can demand of hot girls, but it's part of what separates the hot girls from the stunningly beautiful women. Jessica Alba might give you a hardon and quicken your breath, but she'll never take your breath away. Even at her most elegant and poised, she strikes you as strong and lovely, even sensual, but not deliriously beautiful.

Her sense of style can be critiqued (there's things she gets right, things she gets really wrong), but again, girls with well-formed bodies don't need to develop a real sense of style to be drooled over by guys. The emphasis is all wrong nowadays in American culture about what constitutes beauty, sexiness, etc. I've found it all so uninspiring, depressing and above all, *neutering* that I've turned to Italian nude drawings from the days of Michelangelo and nude black and white photos of women reclining in sand dunes by Edward Weston to remind myself of what it's like to be overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the human form. By the beauty of thighs and breasts on women, and the beauty of the straightforward lines and strong shoulders on men. Let's put it this way: The best compliment I ever received from a man was that I looked like a Renoir painting. The worst compliment I ever received from a man (unfortunately, my dearest ex-boyfriend) was that I had a million dollar ass. It's something to think about. Hopefully some of you will have read up to this point and think similarly. In the end, ranking women is the real insult, and considering celebrities as long-term relationship material is just fucking retarded! :-)
